Why does a single takedown that leads to little control time or damage negate all striking??

Yup, watch the fight carefully again, Round 2 was super close. I edged it to DDP. He was still eating a few jabs, but he was starting to disrupt Sean's rhythm and dictating the pace of the fight. And he carried that momentum with him for rounds 3 and 4. Strickland took 5 simply because he was landing more strikes and some heavy ones, whilst DDP started whiffing strikes and didn't do much with the takedowns. Overall, both had made a case for winning the fight, definitely not a robbery.

I am a South African, so I am slightly biased and happy that Dricus came away with the belt. Awesome fight though, could have gone either way. Wouldn't mind seeing these two warriors run it back.

Sean was too afraid of DDP's power, showed him too much respect, took no risks, he talked a big game, he said he was coming for war, he said he was ready to die. The way he fought, he seemed afraid and not ready for war / death. DDP is an absolute marauding berserker, that dude is really ready to die in that cage.

I think that Aspinall should fight the winner of Blaydes vs. Almeida. It's a fight that is happening soon. The defense of an interim title has happened.

The thing about the take it from the champ is that justification is used when it's dominant champs like Jones and Izzy. I feel like in '22 and '23 we were often hearing that justification for why a champ won it on the cards. So now we're gonna get critical of that and not give it to a new champ. It was a close fight. DDP definitely did NOT take it from the champ, he gave it everything he had and I don't think even had 1 significant strike. When you look at their faces, who looks like they took more damage? I know it will piss a lot of people off, but a draw and immediate rematch would probably have been more accurate. FWIW Rogan and all his boys thought it was a clear 3-2 to Strickland...

Strickland threw around 43 more strikes and did more damage throughout the fight because Plessis was limping after the fight and his face was damaged badly. Most of Plessis' punches were blocked as well until round 4. How could Plessis even win with 2 minutes of control time with ZERO submission attempts and ZERO ground strikes?!? Even Vettori had an aggressive approach with 7 minutes of control time with 4 takedowns against Adesanya in the rematch and lost every single round. Even Usman had 5 minutes of control time with 4 takedowns against Edwards in the trilogy and lost. Let's all be honest; the judges are stupid but having Strickland as the champ isn't much of a win situation for the UFC, so Plessis vs Adesanaya in Africa is what they wanted all along.

Comparing the champion not having to worry about losing close fights with the game "king of the hill" is such a good analogy. Dana can't say champions can't lose by close decision but then want exciting fights and be angry about boring fights. He is a hypocrite for having two polar different stances.

With regards to the lull in technical ability, I agree that the lighter divisions are super technical. I’m waiting for those fighters that have been in the gym and raised by ultra competitive parents since age 5 to come through to the UFC.

Neil Magny at middleweight is one of the worst ideas ive heard

Middleweight has been the least competitive men's division almost unabated for decades now but these two guys are a perfect example of how bad the skill level is. Du Plessis swung a right hand missed by two feet and then threw a spinning backfist missing by an extra 3 feet. Clearly throwing with his eyes closed and Strickland still couldn't couldn't counter that. Anderson Silva or Rich Franklin would have beaten either of these guys 18 years ago.

Dan Hardy, why doesn’t MMA judging get updated wording which includes more 10/10 rounds for razor close ones that clearly are draw rounds but judges are encouraged to give a fighter a 10/9 edge based off what Octagon control?!🙄Time again in close fights we the fans and the fighters have to argue over another split decision controversy when this simple rewording in the MMA judging criteria would solve most of this going forward.

UFC Scoring Scoring System, under Dominance (striking and grappling) as a scoring criterion: "Dominant grappling is where a fighter takes aggressive positions over their opponent 👉AND attempts to end the fight through landing strikes and/or submissions"👈 DDP did not attempt to "end the fight through landing strikes and/or submissions" with his takedowns. His takedowns should not be used to judge his performance for any round. People don't seem to understand that, unless there is simply no other action from other fighter, simply taking someone down doesn't count. Any judge who factored in those takedowns was derelict in this responsibilities. As for downed opponents and so-called "weight-bearing" contact, there is no such criterion that specifically refers to "weight bearing" contact. How could anyone ever determine whether a fighter is simply resting a hand flat on the floor or actually putting weight on the hand? How much weight is required on the hand to consider it "weight bearing?" Even a single finger puts a force on the floor and thus, technically, bears weight, even if it's only the weight of the finger in question. As a qualifier, it's way too subjective to be considered a factor in identifying a downed opponent. Contact is contact. Now, whether there should be such a thing as a "downed opponent" is another subject entirely.

I don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion Sean will not be champion again. I feel opposite of you about Sean vs Izzy. I think Sean’s style isn’t great for Izzy when the defense is that good. Sure he could get setup, but Sean doesn’t really need to change anything to beat Izzy again as long as he avoids the big ones.

To all of those who saw all those gorgeous head kicks, great set ups, fast too with the lead leg. Ive been working on my rear and lead leg question mark kicks. And i will tell you now, they had alot more flare then substance. Its very difficult to get your question mark kicks to be powerful, ddp did very minimal damage with his. He was slapping with the toes instead of cracking with the shin. Good fight, want an immediate rematch personally, had 1,2,5 for strickland.
