No one wants to suggest this, but I think that he was told to referee that way because we all know that Dana White would rather have Sean O'Malley as champion than marab. I guess that was a subtle way of getting the fight back in Sean's favor
Speak for yourseldlf; Merab vs Sean was a good strategic fight. If i just want to watch fighters standup i watch One Championship Muay Thai fights. Is that why he started by killing the momentum in the first round. People fall for the NFL tricks all the time. The ref makes a momentum killing call against the intended target team then 10 stupid little insignificant calls against the other team and no one notices they just ruined the game.
To be fair, Herbs reffing has gone down hill bad since the last five years. It was damned bizarre as Dean was telling Merab to work constantly. Merab landed 226 strikes. Not like he didn’t land anything
it's more psychological than anything. It makes Merab thinks he's losing. demoralizing the fighter can cause him to lose. Makes it seem like Herb Dean was paid to try his best to let Sean win. Suga Sean was Dana's cash cow.

Jason Herzog just gave one of the worst stoppages in mma history in June of this year. Cannonier vs Imavov. I think his quote after he watched it was something like "I need to reevaluate". Honestly a way worse situation. Just not as big of a main event. They all make mistakes.

It literally was disturbing. Definitely made it look like he was being influenced to try to get Sean O’Malley to win. Actions like that make the sport look illegitimate.
Most over-rated ref in the sport. There are worse ones, of course, but no other ref gets called "best referee in the business" over and over and over. To me, Marc Goddard is the best. They have a tough job, and they all make mistakes. But Herb regularly does baffling things. Very inconsistent in how he calls fights. He lets guys take too much damage too often.
I liked Herb but when i heard his refute against, was it Tom Hardy, who went after Herb for a late stoppage and Herb sounded completely arrogant. Gotta watch it again…

Herb is the best ref in the ufc just because he had a questionable night doesn’t distinguish from all the other good fights he has reffed, you guys also fail to mention that he also called out sean for illegally grabbing merabs gloves
UFC fighters should pay attention and make sure it’s on their contracts to avoid this referee or another one that had this kind of behavior that worked against them in previous fights .This referee specifically on this fight seemed that he had money on O’Malley 😮
Herb has been getting worse every year for one simple reason, his ego. I have been super critical of Herb for a long time about his ego. How many times should a fight have been stopped clearly, but Herb doesn't stop the fight b/c the fighter tried to? how many times has Herb just fumbled his words during last minute instructions, that isn't a big deal but he has been doing this a long time, you would think he would have it memorized. Herb's ego is out of control and there are now hundreds of examples of this.
I imagine it can be hard to figure out where you're in the octogone. So if the other camp "pretends" to coach you by saying your name and telling you to do this or that you might be wired to just go for it. Just like Aljo did in his fight with Suga. So it's unfair. The other team shouldn't be calling the opponent's name period.

Even for seans sake it was probably frustrating just becasue those same words are also used when a fight is being close to being stopped. Not that there was a ever a moment that it looked like that was going to happen, but I bet it even threw sean off a little bit. Especially since tim tried to F with merab and it back fired and got omalley in his feelings. Omalley reminded me of izzy vs strickland, like how after izzy got dropped he was just so scared for his ego's sake to lose to a guy like strickland.

Herb Dean needs to referee middle school sports. Not professional level sports like the UFC. He has ruined so many fights and tried to create his own odds showing he is either paid or gambling through exterior sources.
Refs should not be allowed to bet on fights that they ref, simple. This ref was totally out of hand and the ref was trying to turn the fight in Sugafrees favour, not on. Also Tim the couch was trying to distract Merob, NO ON.
Herb has been indecisive and inconsistent for years. His extremely late stoppage in Abu Dhabi years ago had Dan Hardy so agitated he was yelling from the broadcast boost. This helped to cost Hardy his job and we lost one of the best commentators. Dean has had so many bad stoppages, late stoppages and a complete lack of enforcement of rules against certain, high profile fighters. He needs to retire.
The “flashy diva strikers” are the ones who help the sport grow and keep it entertaining. Wrestling dominates strikers no doubt but then it becomes something stale. The crowd doesn’t go crazy for top control or for control time. They go crazy and pay money for knockouts and striking exchanges. Weird take.

Ive been saying for years he's a BAD REFEREE. I've watched him closely. He's not mentally sharp enough to be a good ref. Hes too lethargic and aloof. Dan Hardy exposed him. For some bizarre reason, Dana is always dishonestly marketing him as the gold standard. Its so weird. Goddard is a much better ref.

Just because the fix didnt work doesnt mean they werent trying to effect the fights outcome. Clearly Herb was favoring sean. Sean was allowed to back pedal and fight on the outside for the first 4 rounds but merab wasnt for the last round when he was up 4-0 and it was sean who should have to push the action if he wanted the win. That is clear bias.
Of course everything that's out of LOL my ride was fighting the ref the judges Dana's minions and everybody only way he was going to win is by rag doll and like you did I'm so glad 😂. Ronald McDonald O'Malley is a complete joke
