UFO are criminally underrated. They've influenced so many bands, and Michael Schenker has influenced an army of guitarists. The five albums they did with Michael in the 70's, plus the live masterpiece Strangers In The Night , belong in every rockers collection, alongside this album Walk On Water.
How true. I've played drums for 40years now. Love to love, lights out,and many others were my first. Done em 1980. Funny, even in 18 I still jam em. Did self made man with my we band. Fireball. 23 piece kit.dw drumms and all sabin cymbals. Chicago
When this song and this album came out I couldn't believe my ears, this is one hell of a comeback, absolutely top level along with the 70s releases, Schenker - Mogg is a match made by the rock gods, as long as they worked together the magic was always there.. Superbe song for a class act band, the Ufo Schenker I or II era are legendary 🤘🤘
@@tonycarlier2493 Agree. And then, it came so great quite surprisingly, when one could hardly expect a jewel from a seemingly tired and worn band. The first song is splendid, at least two songs could be cut with the musical ideas included; then Venus is almost even better, then I can't wait for the chorus: Darkes days... but most of all, near the end of the whole thing I am every time waiting for an absolutely fabulous bit - the words _I am dreaming of summer / of just me and you now, etc. - just a few seconds of musical (not lyrical) beauty comparable to the fragment: _Did she understand it when they said / That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure? in Beatles' Girl. Has any other hard / heavy rock band ever released such a great album so late down their career?
OK, to be fair: Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers was another great reunion album, better than expected on a post-the-prime stage of musicians' careers. But UFO were even later down the line with Walk on Water and... Walk on Water is even greater than Perfect Strangers, in my opinion.
UFO are a brilliant Rick band. They have left a hundred consistently playable tracks across all their albums Phil mogg is right up there with vocalists and composers.
When UFO got back together this is the first song I heard. And I have to say they still kick ass. It's like Schenker refuses to grow old, he still has a thorn in his foot. God , he's a wicked guitar player. And Raymond and Schenker work great together.
I am so grateful for posting this song, you have no ideia. Specially because there isn't people fighting in the comments, so much hate these days, but people connecting and sharing information/experiences. That brings a tear to my eye. So many people who likes to enjoy good music in the end of the day. THANK YOU, I LOVE YOU ALL !!
After buying Ufo's album Phenomenon back in my High School days in the 70s I have loved this power packed band. This reunion cd was a welcomed gem from one of the 70s best hard rock bands, Bravo guys...
Schenker writes great riffs as well as great solos. There's nothing "token" or just "mailed in" about his work. The song develops and grows with each section, and then peaks at the end into the fade. Bravisimo!
This song is one of my favorites from Walk on Water... UFO should be more known worldwide. Man, the guys from Iron Maiden said UFO's music had much influence on their work. Everyone should listen the album Phenomenon.. It's great stuff... Obsession and Lights out are too.
Saw Rush /UFO at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium back in 1978......They were insane.....Rush was beyond phenomenal.....Getty Lee's voice peeled the paint off the walls......UNBELIEVABLE......Legendary night......Phil's voice was so spot on incredible and Michael's guitarist SCREAMED......
PHENOMENON was the first UFO album i bought, cause i heard rock bottom and it blew me away. Then i went to a record store and "Force it" just came out,i never heard a single track but i bought it and thought this band is going to make big time. Then "No heavy petting".Igot the chance to see UFO on the Lights out tour they are without a doubt one of the greatest live bands i've ever seen, also RUSH are big fans of UFO.They toured togeather in the 70's,there is a bootleg album with both bands on it.
The entire album is sensational! A very rare case when a come-back album (after some lean years and disintegration of the band) is arguably its best. One great track after another, crowned by the fabulous last one. Here in Self-made man merits of Michael are so obvious, no need to say more. However, listen closely to drums part and appreciate how clean and precise they are, how well produced, how great they sound, especially the snare, how every single touch can be heard. And much more: generally known for his regular, steady beat and strong hit, here Andy Parker astonishes with intricacy he had not revealed much before. Just count how many pauses, changes of speed jus for two or three bars, changes of time signature. He does more in this single song than on many previous albums. I enjoy brilliant Michael, cool Pete Way, rock-solid Phil and competent Paul adorning the background, but I say BRAVO! to Andy Parker.
UFO absolutely brilliant, why oh why does a band this great remain underrated,it is fantastic that they keep going and producing such sublime music to enjoy, when so much mediocre music dominates the airwaves
The resurgence of the great one returns to grace himself with UFO and all of us as fans are ecstatic, the comeback of all comebacks, another generation is upon us, I know that we always expected that 35-40 minutes album back then if we were lucky, a couple of cover versions included on this album too. So what?, it was a long time coming, sadly, there's been a lot of heartache since, too many of our heroes passed away in a relatively short space of time 😞
humanjukebox this release did not come out of nowhere, it was meant to be! 20 years ago they recorded Walk on Water and in my opinion it's the best UFO album since Strangers in the Night 😎
Michael Schenker, Michael Schenker, and Michael Schenker, that's right these are my three, favorite Guitarists of all time. Case closed, if you don't like Ufo, you suck.... axeflyer MD.
Mr Jailbird 32, That sounds like me, been a fan since hearing Phenomenon in 74, started going to see them, including the Lights Out tour on November 23rd 77 in Knoxville Tenn, with AC/DC with Bon Scott. Such a great concert, Bon Scott and Michael Schenker in one glorious rock n roll night. Rock On!
There are so many thing going on here, in this song... the structure, the changes, the melodies and those lyrics. This is really a powerful song, on many levels; both in message and musically. Next time, open a tab to the lyrics and follow along and then let it sink in how great Mogg and Schenker were as a writing team and how much was missed. Damn.
The beauty if Michael Schenker besides his creamery smooth tone is the fact that you never hear him play the same phrase twice. I've been studying him for years and I have yet to hear him repeat a lick.
After nearly 20yrs. of Michael and Phils differences they pull off this 6.25 minute Masterpiece.. I've seen every incarnation of UFO including the recording of Strangers at the Amphitheater in Chicago and when they hit the stage it's like catching lightening in a bottle..
This lineup, Schenker, Mogg, Way, Raymond and Parker is the definitive UFO. I've seen every lineup but 3, and this is definitely the best in the studio and on the stage.
@@claudiocruzat4624 At least he doesn't cheat by wearing a whig. And anyway, are you going to a concert to admire his hair or his voice... Because, well, I don't get what your priorities are based on your comment.
3 marshall stacks with 6- 50 watt heads was what he always used back in the day i saw them in a small club in 95 and low and behold 3 stacks 6 50 watt hesds
You can hear that it's where Maiden (particularly post Seventh Son...) derives a certain deliberate abandon in terms of arrangement. A very similar writing style. UFO one of the great rock bands of all-time.
Metallica et al would have rendered this vibe with the usual stock thump-thump-thump chug-chug-chug riff. This way more sophisticated and psychological.
I wonder how Schenker is doing that intro guitar line. It sounds like like he layered it with one line ascending and the other descending. Need to have a closer listen.
The Rock n Roll hall of Fame has no credibility, ABBA, Madonna, Donna Summer, Bee Gees, freakin Public Enemy, imagine Flavor Flav in the hall of fame, and not one member from UFO or Grand Funk RR....its a crying shame!
