Attaching the jib is so much harder than it looks, the hardest part is literally the pin and key chain ring.

Excellent! I never thought about the safety line to prevent loss of the rudder - small but important detail - thanks!

way better than the other guy's video on rigging the 420; I do find, however, that some terms could use a tad more explaining (ie Cunningham, here)

Hi Michael, thanks for your response! I took your advice in our "How to Rig a Flying Scot" video that was posted two weeks back. I agree it could use more explaining and I hope I succeeded a little better in the most recent rigging video. Appreciate your feedback! -Allison

@Michael Cox, I do not know if this will help but the Cunningham is the down-haul. They are synonymous terms.
@rudynunweiler2916
@rudynunweiler2916 2 года назад
@@Nora-tc2pn Sorry if someone told you they are the same but they are not. The Cunningham attaches at the bottom of the main sail just above the boom and is used to adjust the shape of the sail. The Down-haul is attached at the head (top) of the sail and does as it's name says and is used for hauling down the sail and once cleated hold it down. My friend has a downhaul on his jib and when it gets to windy for both jib and main he lowers the jib with it. His boat is an old wooden boat with a curved deck covering the bow. With many clear coats the natural woodgrain is gorgeous but very slippery, especially when it get a little spray from the waves on it. Much easier to use the Down-haul than try to walk out there in bad weather. Hope this helps. :)

Question from a novice. At 1:02-1:03, narrator says the tack of the jibsail is "the frontmost corner" of the sail. Isn't the frontmost corner of the sail the clew? Should she have said the "tack?" Trying to avoid confusion. Thanks for an overall helpful vid.

How do you rig the pulley system for the main sail?
@ugasailing9571
@ugasailing9571 2 года назад
Hi Dave, the mainsail has a loop tied within the line that serves the same purpose as the actual hardware on the jib halyard. If you want the same physics on a boat that's not a 420, this can be achieved by tying a loop on itself in a position high enough that will never reach the cleat so it won't get in the way of securing the halyard. Happy sailing, Allison

Hi Allison, I bought a 1984 Javelin "o'day" and have Searched much yet I haven't found a GOOD manual for rigging. This 420 is similar and the video is helpful, BUT is there anywhere I can find a 1984 or so Javelin rigging Manual?!? Thanks.
@ugasailing9571
@ugasailing9571 2 года назад
Hi Bill! I'm not too familiar with the Javelin O'Day but I've sailed a few O'Days- I'm sure my googling efforts would yield the same results you're finding, though. Best of luck! -Allison

Thank god, I'm not the only one who thinks this. I thought I was the strange one It's completely stupid because the boat could capsize on land and something could break or someone could get hurt.
@ghost.master343
@ghost.master343 3 года назад
Where I am we have things that support the boats to not tip over when we're on land. However, you can still pull it up just make sure to storm rig it afterwards

We don't use spinnakers in collegiate-style racing so we opted to omit spinnakers in the rigging video as this channel was made to serve our college students learning to sail :) Hope this provides some clarity -Allison
