Sept 2022 marks half a century since the start of the forced expulsion of Asians of Indian descent from Uganda. Upon seizing power in a military coup, the dictator Idi Amin gave more than sixty thousand Asians just 90 days to get out the country or face imprisonment or worse, death.
Those who had British passports - a legacy of colonial rule - were able to come to the UK but they had to leave almost everything they owned behind. Now five decades on, this mass exile is being remembered by surviving generations. Sharuna Sagar has been to meet two friends whose families were close friends back in Africa, and who came to the north east of England to start their new lives.
