Robert Charles reflects on the life of his mother 'Bunty Charles' who carries iconic status for her voluntary work with Ugandan Asians and her numerous other charitable causes. Bunty was the driving force at the Heathfield Camp in 1972/3 during the arrival of Ugandan Asians - she left a lasting legacy.
Ugandan Journeys is a three-series set of video programmes documenting the stories of British volunteers who aided the Asian migrants forced to leave Uganda by Idi Amin in 1972/3. The programmes further include testimonies from residents and people who worked in the camps.
This oral history project - British Ugandan Asians at 50 (BUA50.ORG) - is the production of the India Overseas Trust with the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It is an integral part of British volunteering heritage and an extraordinary historical episode that helped shape
modern Britain's diversity.
The Heathfield Resettlement Camp in Devon was used primarily as a holding camp. The expellees were brought after arrival at Stansted Airport and before being sent to other camps or found homes in the local area. There is not anything left of the campsite. The area is now a retail centre and adjoined by council buildings.
