Cuphead wasn't cancelled all the episodes were created more or less in one single swoop and released in chunks. It was never intended to be a long runner.
It wasn't though. I remember it being jumpy and choppy, way too bright, and every now and then they'd get lazy and just replace a character with a PNG of a duck.
@@olliegoria i mean; the bright colors, the background character citizens being duck PNG's and maybe the jumpy animation was more of a stylistic choice rather than plain lazyness; the choppiness on the other hand really had no real justification.
The show that pushes a hyper sexualized, LGBBTTQQIAPP+ Where that replaces personality on underage minors, on a Service that pushed and glorified "Cuties", and you don't know why the propaganda was greenlit and pushed so much??
Always hated that artstyle which had perfect Round eyes, no lineweight and no shading. American dad, Rick and morty, bigmouth etc.. Its just made to be easily pumped out because it needs zero talent and can be recreated by ANY new employee after the old one quit.
There's plenty of artstyles with Perfect round eyes, no line weight and no shading that STILL look appealing and somewhat decent. These shows are just drawn really ugly
American Dad! Is actually funny though. Who cares how it looks if it’s entertaining. Hell, Smiling Friends looks like garbage but it’s funny as hell. Super Jail, ugly as hell, but pretty funny. Bad art only becomes a problem when the rest of the show feels like you are snorting diarrhea
american animation was never top notch, it was always seen as for children and not worthy of respect and that basically crippled it since it's inception.
well, it could just be their style of drawing. we've had shows that had more interesting-looking character designs like Rugrats or The Wild Thornberrys. some would say those art styles are ugly, no? On the other hand, it DOES feel like some shows try to grab your attention with unppealing character designs. that's pretty lame to me. 🤷♂
Code Lyoko honestly wasn't that bad. The foreheads are weird, but it helped it to stand out. A show with an even worse artstyle imo is Angela Anaconda. That show used to freak me out as a kid 😂😂😂
Xavier Renegade Angel is an amazing show. Oddly it has “ugly” characters that aren’t ugly. They feel like they should be ugly but it’s more like the animation is ugly than the style. They just look surreal more like, which fits for the show, and they’re mostly easy on the eyes
The dudes who made uncle grandpa and the show you showcased by those same creators, problem solvers, regularly show, adventure time, gumball, and all of the other classics are kinda when I think Cartoon Network peeked.
@@Sh0koUN1776 yeah imo, just cause as a kid I used to be able to mimic some of the characters with friends, but I probably wouldn’t have the patience for it now 💀
Uncle grandpa is at least watchable unlike secret mount fort awesome guys who’s made magus xlr was awesome should sued cn for make taxes right off people want more of it should they made more .
When I was really young, for some reason I was confused on Double D's gender; then some time passed and my lil brain finally connected the dots that his name is Edd lmao
Code Lyoko was really good and still is. I wish they got a rework but instead, Cartoon Network gave us the abomination that is TTG. Also, I guess I never paid attention to the foreheads as a child because I actually have a big forehead as well.
I think an example of the ugly cartoon done proper is smiling friends. Not every character looks ugly, in fact some look cute or attractive. The difference is that it uses the ugly for comedic effect or to contrast a character with the colorful smiling friends and uses the unflattering nature of certain shots as the butt of the joke. Take for example front-facing Charlie, the shrimp after he puts on his new outfit, pre-blibly control Desmond and his mom, and more. The show leverages the ugly for comedic effect, the show itself does not look ugly
Hazbin Hotel isn't ugly? *Looks at every single character being a jagged skinny person that are variations of either shades or red with shark tooth grins, living in a world where an entire area can only look like one solid color* Right...
Early 2000s French animation was such a weird time. We had shows like Oban, Galakatik Football and Code Lyoko with all 3 of them using a mix of 2D animation outside of action scenes and then they blast you with early 2000s tv show budged CGI.
Shows like Bricklezaridise P.D and Big Mouth are not actually for adults, they're for teens that think they're more mature or edgy by watching shows with swear words and genitals. An actual adult that's mature wouldn't find these shows very entertaining.
"An actual adult that's mature wouldn't find these shows very entertaining." Says who...? Brickleberry can be entertaining at times. Paradise PD... a strong meh for me, but it does have its moments. They're not peak comedy, but they were never supposed to be a peak comedy, it's silly and crude, but people are **allowed** to enjoy something like this from time to time. You're the one that sound like a stuck up, pretentious edgy teen right now. :D
@@Enoch610 Just because you like something doesn't make it good. Those shows are *very* far from peak comedy. Silly crude humor has its place in comedy, there's plenty of stuff I like that has it. Shows and movies can use crude humor very effectively, but not if almost every joke is about swears, genitals, or violence. At some point it gets old, and that point comes real fast. Brickleberry and its alt skins do not use crude humor in a way that's funny or even slightly humorous. It just bombards you with the same stuff over and over again.
@@jacobcox4565 I never said the show is **good** . Read comments more carefully, because you missed my point completely. "Silly crude humor has its place in comedy, there's plenty of stuff I like that has it." Then give me an example.
When I was a kid I always used to watch cartoon shows often but when I try to find new cartoons I always used to determine if the cartoon is good or bad by the artstyle I LITERALLY DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT THE PLOT AND I WAS LIKE "nah I'm not watching this shi"💀💀
I think the point is because anime and stuff is just trying to look extremely perfect and glamorous all the time and these shows are going in the complete other direction to show that things can look ugly but still be good. Unfortunately they usually fail at the being good part. But I am kind of sick of people drawing “the ideal human” for all of their character designs, like it’s just funny to draw a stupider uglier looking person because it’s just showing that we don’t have to look perfect all the time (my friend who constantly watches anime has started to point out that every girl that he sees that doesn’t look like a freaking model is ugly which is why I think it’s healthy to have stupid shows that don’t take themselves super seriously). now big mouth on the other hand doesn’t lean into it enough to make it a statement. But I really respect something like meetcanyons animations just for doing this
I know it isn't an excuse, but I guess the ugly character styles of bigmouth do make sense, considering its about puberty and the awkward stages of life.
@@Dante9k nick kroll comes from immense wealth apparently, so it doesn’t make nearly enough to keep coming back, but little Nicky just keeps it up with dads paycheck.
I have nothing against fictional stuff but Big Mouth... The shit that goes on in that show and the way it looks just screams the creators are pdfs. If it didn't look so ugly and that stuff was occasional but not as intense it would be different. But it being ugly just serves the purpose of making you think they're just joking and aren't pdfs. Yet there was news where the creators turned out to be pdfs.
2:27 me, this show was for me, as i kid I loved building things and explosions, also i was familiar with Andrew W K because his music was used in some MLP fanimations back in the day
2:11 Nah, DBD was peak. I used to love taking apart random junk from around the house and cobbling it together. So, maybe it was only me and like 5 other 10 year old boys with a special breed of the 'tism, but I loved it.
Same lmao. I thought they looked terrible. I don't like Dragon Ball (or any of Akira Toriyama's works either) for the same reason. I respect the artist but it's not for me
Disgusting art in kids shows is the worst offender as it can have a lasting impact on a child's psyche. Sort of like if all you see is shit you start feeling like shit.
Whenever code looked came on at my old house I used to jump up and down on the couch, I loved that show when I was a kid, AND DRAGONBALL IS THE GOAT FOREHEADS ARE PEAK
6:39 if it helps you, when I was a full on toddler, I couldn’t tell if Buttercup from PowerPuff Girls was a boy or not. Maybe because she had a “deeper” voice than Blossom and Bubbles or because she had shorter hair? No idea
kinda the same situation with Rainbow Dash from MLP:FiM Loud, Noisy and Brash like how jocks are, meanwhile the other girls are just calmer and more delicate, having a more rough voice, making me confused weither she was a girl or a boy
And then there is the entire filmography of Bartosz Walaszek but his works have the excuse of being made by one guy and are probably the most popular cartoons in Poland
Funnily enough in the Spanish dub the boys from the main cast were all voiced by guys and Odd got the deepest voice, so no one had problems knowing what he was.
The unusually large foreheads in "Code Lyoko" seem to be as iconic of a design quirk as the characters in "As Told by Ginger" (which is otherwise an amazing, underrated gem) having their lips dangle onto the tips of their chins (Miranda is an exception, though).
I hate when these videos explain the simplicity of a joke like thats a actual criticism of the joke. You can do that to nearly any joke ever and get the same results. "He is a epic wizard who is destroying a mountain and you would expect him to have a epic name like Gandalf or Dumbeldore but hes named Tim.". "The black knight keeps losing limbs and acts like nothing is wrong even though we can clearly see something is". Look at that i can criticize one of the best comedy movies of all time like that. I swear none of these "critics" think about what they are saying for 5 seconds as it makes no sense.
0:58 this would have been better if the adult said something like "i kinda want this to be its own thing, but don't be surprised if we end up going Rick and Morty." P.D: Big mouth characters look like pleco fishes; those ones that clean aquariums by sucking.
I don't think Hazbin Hotel deserves credit. Although the art style is nice, I find it unfunny and poorly written with lack of effort put into it. (Just my opinion.)
I am an intermediate artists and I personally thought that I was drawing too many appealing or good looking characters… But then I realized that shit like this exists and now I don’t feel so bad…
The second I saw Code Lyoko, I had a feeling it was only gonna be about their big ass foreheads. In CGI, it works fine, but in 2-D it can be distracting at times.
Smiling Friends was the first adult swim cartoon I ever decided to seek out, and a big part of why I enjoy it so much is that the art style is appealing to look at. Pim’s design sparks so much joy. Biggest confusion I had on genders for cartoons was definitely Linny from Wonder Pets and Wubbzy from Wow Wow Wubbzy. Like I know Linny is a girl now (which was still the biggest plot twist of my childhood) but Wubbzy?? What are you. Why are you.
@@bathroomshy good to know! As I said this was the first adult swim show I ever seeked out so its nice to have some others to add to my list of to watch :) what’re the plots?
So Nick Roll is rich so that explains how that shit is still around and my best guess is either the dude has some "connections" or he bribed the higher ups like he was the bootleger that constantly bribes the police during the prohibition
Big Mouth is not a series I'd invest my time in. As for the content itself, I do personally feel disgusted by it. Nevertheless, at least it isn't real unlike "Cuties".
I’m not much of a cartoon expert but one I hated as a kid was fish hooks because it just looked gross to me and I didn’t find anything funny, maybe because I was constantly repulsed but probably not.
I remember big mouth came out when I was 14... i watched it mildly amused but didnt find it the craziest or funniest thing. Childish "hah omg sex" mindset but there was actual lowkey 'educational' and helped me better understand how to express how i felt about body changes and relationships and how people change when those two mix. But that was like season 1 and that rarely happened lmfao lets be real. Im 21 now and for the life of me can NOT sit down and watch it... It's like ugly, animated euphoria that had a baby with family guy. Ive seen shows cancelled and unfinished but this show got a spin off and more episodes?? Who is this demographic for again... Just cancel this weird shit.
Probably Florida no smoke to Floridians but some of there city’s just ain’t right tbf you can say that about alotta states it’s just more in Florida which is a shame
Code lyoko will always be in my heart as my first cartoon that I have watched from first to last episode in English (for young Poland girl it was achievement since English wasn’t my language 😅
Code Lyoko didn’t have that ugly in terms of animation. And besides, it’s one of the few blend of 2d and computer animated shows that’s not an eyesore as the computer animation in the world of Lyoko does look good, despite the graphics looking like they belong in a PS2 game, but the idea of that show was a video game simulator.
I'll say even Invincible can have some pretty ugly and flat designs. It's mostly on the faces especially the eyes were some characters will have heavy bags or the eyelids are more pronounced.
Another show that I would like to bring up that probably wasn’t in this video was the show “housebroken” , that show is a good example on why ugly art styles just don’t work , instead of going for a expensive art style or doing something to help It stand out , (could of even had the art style somewhat be in a similar vain as the secret life of pets since the shows about pets going to therapy )instead it tries to copy the art style of family guy so the shows art style comes off as weird, bizarre, uncanny, unnerving , and even sometimes just downright creepy. The art style of that show is so bad that I short of have PTSD from that show.
for code lyoko, i have NOT watched the original series as it never had reruns in my country however after looking at them, I do like the designs. Their foreheads ARE big, but it's not straight up distracting like some designs. For me since it is consistent across all characters I was able to easily get used to them and i just cannot let one small thing overshadow how good the rest of the art direction is, with their CGI sections looking EXTREMELY awesome especially for 2000s cartoons
One thing is having your character being ugly for a stylistic choice (Anxiety from Inside Out) and other is having character being ugly because your style is ugly (everyone in Big Mouth)
