Here's weekly dose of your catastrophic engine forensics! Every week you can find a new teardown of some abused, misused and/or poorly designed engine. Here are some of my favorites:

Today we tear down a supercharged 5.4L V8 from a 2002 F150 Harley Davidson. This engine is a detuned lightning engine that ford stuffed into a crew cab truck for only two years.
This engine is a complete unknown as far as condition, miles, etc. I bought it as is for a teardown and the parts value and today we tear it down to see what's good, and what isn't. This poor engine has seen some neglect, and has suffered some pretty common problems for these engines.
Why do I do this? I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart. Part of our model includes buying broken, bad, blown and otherwise unusable as-is engines and dismantling them to salvage the good parts. We do not rebuild engines, merely supply parts to those who do.

The only vehicle my Dad ever bought new was his 2000 Harley Davidson Ford truck. This was the first year for the special model and was loaded with goodies including two bed covers (hard and soft), and even dealer stuff like Harley branded insulated bottles, special floor mats, etc. Dad loved that truck and kept every document that came with it. Dad's gone now, but that truck is still sitting in his garage with only 105,000 km on it (Canadian truck). Mom won't sell as she loves it too and takes it out for an occasional cruise...

I collect and use water from a `barrel`.(soft or rain water). Best water besides deionized that you can use.

sht oil doesnt last as long as good oil.. never exceeeeeeeeedd changes.. had a bronco, 82, on lpg from when i bought it 15 yrs ago,, 351c, running on 6, so fitted 302c heads, 12.1 comp.. changed oil rufly every 3 months regardless, 20/50 , never an issue, blew 2 ignotion coils, oil pump needed replacing.. reliable as a rock..scary fast for a 3t truck..

7-8k intervals are absolutely fine with good oil and a good filter unless your engine is known to roast its oil especially hard such as having a poorly-cooled turbo (I run 7k on my Volvo with its baby turbo)

​@@harrywalker968LPG burns ridiculously cleanly. I have seen service books from the ealry 1980s recommending oil changes every 500 hours/15,000 miles on LPG vehicles, and that was with poor quality early 1980s engine oil.

I’m a big fan of the 2V Ford Modular engines. I used to work for the state motor pool, where I worked on (among other things) state trooper cars and police academy cars, which were all Crown Vics at the time (Chargers were just showing up when I left). The cars themselves were not great, but the 4.6s (which is just a small version of the 5.4) never broke. The police did every thing they could to break them, including ridiculous amounts of idling, thrashing them during chases, overheating them (because the electric cooling fans would fail), etc. They never break. The only one that I ever had to replace has due to the trooper hitting a boulder in the road and driving until it stopped (they also managed to wipe out the transmission). Even the police academy cars, which spent their lives being thrashed by cadets around the track, the engines never failed. Yes, they had issues (like blowing out spark plugs, usually after someone replaced them without using a torque wrench), breaking exhaust manifold studs, breaking the intake manifold on those with the plastic cooling passage, etc, but the engine itself is solid. The rest of the car…that’s a different story…

Of course they don't break, it's like a 7.3 it doesn't make enough power to break itself. I personally don't like modular, it's all the performance of a v6 with all the consumption of a v8. They where designed from the learnings of the 427 cammer and should have been excellent modern powerhouse, ford engineered it for FWD layouts like GMs NorthStar, but unlike GM, ford completely banked on a fundamentally flawed engine. And even now ford is stuck with 5.0 because the modular architecture can't be made bigger without adding cylinders. It's not a good engine when you consider all the other engines available, and even the ones out going like the SBF series. If you want a good small displacement, economy v8 the best one was AMCs 4.7 powertech, ignoring Mopar quality issues, that's an excellent engine design. Simple things like shortening the chain lengths by having an intermediate chain made sure they never had timing issues (unlike the modular)

@@SPAZTICCYTOPLASM they are stuck with a 5.0 but are mopping the floor on LS's...... Yeah the 4.6 was under powered, they need boost. I have no idea where you get the idea of it being engineered for FWD, there's literally only ONE fwd variant....... For how big the Panthers are, they achieve decent economy, wasn't uncommon to average 20-22..... v6 are inefficient and 💩! Modular engines are reliable workhorses, where they shine is torque. The biggest downfall of pre coyotes was the lack of aftermarket support. The LS is so popular for one reason, because they fucking fit!

@@krisverde you mean has more low end torque. "peak torque" isn't telling us much, more doesn't exactly mean better universally, low end torque is where trucks greatly benefit. Having more low end torque means that it produces usable torque longer before falling off. Horsepower and torque are 2 different things but made to scale the same (that's why at 5200rpm they cross, because there needs to be a constant to reference. Same as acceleration and speed, ones a force of pressure while the others a distance over time. More acceleration doesn't mean more speed. More torque doesn't tell us more horsepower (for instance, Diesel!)

After talking to 5 mechanics I knew at Ford dealers, I decided to look for my new F150 with a 5.0L - so glad I did. It was my semi retirement present to myself in 2014. While everyone I 12:51 worked with got EcoBoost engines. I get 22-25 mph and perrs like a kitten. So glad I did! 😊

Ford ruined the 5.0 in 2017 by eliminating the steel cylinder liners and spraying the aluminum bores with their version of Nicasil. Now they are oil burning pigs that Ford is being sued over. It’s so widespread that one cylinder liner manufacturer is making a kit for the 5.0 to retrofit them with steel liners.

That salvage yard did you dirty. I had the pleasure of following a Harley Davidson truck the other day. Every time they hit the gas there was black smoke blowing out the tail pipes. I doubt they were rolling coal.

Owned a 2000 Ford Excursion with 6.8 Triton (v10). Tritons from 2000-2003 only had 4 threads holding spark plugs in. Towed a rv 1000 miles from home then got 2 spark plug blowouts. Followed the repair procedures from Ford Makuloco, and used Cal-Van inserts. Spent two days trying to remove metal shavings from two cylinders. I thought I got all of it. Not so much. After reassembly is when the problems really escalated. Instantly had low compression and oil burn with multiple misfire codes. Used one qt of oil and one spark plug every 100 miles. So much oil in cylinder it burned electrode and strap clean off. Turns out introducing aluminum shavings into two cylinders is not so good. Finally got a borescope sent to me and discovered major scoring on cylinder walls. It would run but no way pulling an rv. Drove around in 3rd gear just to keep rpm’s in a happy range the engine liked. Otherwise to engine would try to shake itself apart. Tried for 7 weeks in a campground 40 miles from nowhere to resolve situation but finally gave up and sold it as a mechanic special. Had to buy another tow rig to get home. This story is much longer than stated here but you get the picture. If you own on of these they are ticking time bombs- YOU’VE BEEN WARNED

I just finished rebuilding one of these for a customer. From an 03. Supercharger was cooked, timing chain guides broken, strectched chain, worn sprockets, ate part of the oil pump. Wrecked camshafts, at least the journal parts. Two spun rod bearings, #8 minutes away from chucking a rod through the block. Parts were tough to find for it making the build challenging. The heads are PI flavour, I dont think specific to the lightning but still seem to have value used. They are in way better shape than the ones we reused

The orange in the combustion Chambers is from someone using lots of octane booster. If you use enough of it, it will start to short the plugs out and misfire under load. Ask me how I know 😅

@@iainball2023 I used octane booster one time in my boosted F150 because I detected some knock and didn’t trust the 93 pump gas I filled up with. Half a can turned the plugs orange. Never again. If I had cats you could imagine what it would do to them.

The problem with these trucks, along with the Mustang Cobras, is that they were cheap used. So people bought them that couldn’t afford the on-time Earl changes, the coolant flushes, and the premium fuel that these required. And they got beat on. Poor things.

Yup, probably Boostane or Octanium. Using it now and then for hero runs on the dyno or track, that's fine. If you're running so much of it that your plugs are getting gunked up with the residue then you really should just make the mods necessary to run E85. The odd thing here is that I've no idea why anyone would need to run octane booster on a stock engine with no mods. And if you can afford all that octane booster, why would you skip oil changes?

Most probable thing that wrote this off was the tap water leading to the failure of the seal for the coolant crossover passage - found right next to the intake ports on the rear and front most of the heads. IDK how it is with the SC application but the crossover either leaks into the manifold or the front most port. It then gets missdaiged as a headgasket (hence the orange all in the combustion chambers). coolant basically gets sent right into the intake ports. btw that most likely has the more desirable "PI" heads, casting stamp on the rear

PI heads started in 1999 for the 5.4, so you'd be correct on that assumption. As for the coolant crossover theory, I do concur with that as a possibility. I will say that the coolant crossover leak is a bigger problem with the naturally aspirated 5.4's that got plastic intake manifolds starting in 2000. Happened to me with my 01, but I was fortunate enough to catch it before it became big enough to dump coolant into the intake and/or spark plug wells. Replaced that manifold with an aluminum one off a 99 5.4.

I am about 98% sure I have watched your complete collection and I really want many many more engine tear downs in the future. Seriously can I ship you eye protection? I would feel soooo much more comfortable watching at least one video with you sporting some. I started watching your content with a base knowledge of internal combustion engines as both diddly and squat. Today I am a faithful practitioner of following routine maintenance and fluid change intervals. I may not know tons more but, the picture lessons have been hammered home. Thank you!!

I had a battery explode on me back ages ago when I wrenched. It sent parts of the case into my hands, arms and face, bathed me in acid and caused temporary deafness. I genuinely feel I would have had a serious eye injury from it but I was wearing a nice set of UVEX Astrospec 3000. I always wear my glasses.

I have noticed that at least three quarters of the engines you tear apart died due to neglect. What shame that so many car drivers have zero clue about basic maintenance.

Looks like someone was running RaceGas brand octane additive in the fuel. That's exactly how my 2.7 Ecoboost looked when I ran that stuff. I forget which ingredient leaves that orange residue on the valves, Magnese maybe? Anyway, I ended up burning up an exhaust valve (tune was a bit too aggressive) and the mechanic showed me pictures and asked me what the orange color was all about, and I told him it was from the additive. My plugs were orange too.

I never had it on a dyno but if I had to guess I would say it added somewhere around 100 hp. It was a 100 octane tune in a 2016 2wd regular cab short bed F150. That little sucker hauled ass before it's early demise.

I had an ‘01 5.4 and I knew better than to change the plugs myself. My mechanic kept it for six days. Soaked it with penetrant for three days before even trying to pull the plugs out. Those aluminum heads were a heck of a mess. Keep it up. Your show is the best. Makes me wish I lived close to St Louis. Good Luck!

mate had a jag,4 door. wanted to fit a dodge 360, but no kits,,so took his eyes & brain out,, fitted an 010 block speed shop everything, chev.. 350 chunk.. some bisy body, dobed him in, so, 5 yrs later, re fitted the 6 cyl jag engine, drove to police for a check, . nothing wrong with it.. real alloy, not junk pig iron crap.. engines now are built to fail.. seems a waste of tech,,.

One day I expect a funeral service to happen for a water pump. Every time I see a water pump get thrown across the shop I laugh. The bad pumps getting treated with care is just as funny. These videos are really fun to watch and I end up learning something everytime.

I have a 02 F150 H-D, 470,000 miles, 22 years old, mostly original. Changed timing chains and oil pump at 397,000 miles due to glue from the oil filter blocking an oil passage on the right head. Still runs great!!

​@@AP3D Didn't these have an issue with a coolant crossover pipe & gasket that could end up leaking coolant into the intake and/or down into the spark plug wells? That would explain all that corrosion in the plug wells also...

I want to commend the progression of your videos in the last few years: editing, suspect comments during video ;) ASMR clicks, use of Blue, malice in the combustion palace analysis, and finally the throwing of 'good' parts into the bin. Tap water in the cooling system is one of my biggest pet peeves. Right up there with running 0w16 in older 10w30/40 rated engines because some dumbass thinks he'll save gas since everyone on the Internet says light oil is the new be-all end-all hotness way forward.. They at least got the end all part right!

If you’re the proud owner of a 5.4 the best advice I could give you is don’t skimp on oil changes and use the best quality oil that you can afford. I’ve seen numerous 2-valve versions run past 200K but all had impeccable maintenance histories. Our shop has a plumbing company that has four F-350 service trucks that haul thousands of pounds of pipes,fittings etc and they’re all well over 200K miles now. None have had any internal engine repairs yet. Exhaust studs yes but nothing else. The owner has had them since new and he never postpones critical maintenance like oil changes. Personally I don’t really like them because they are quite a bit more difficult to repair than a 6.0 LS but they can definitely deliver a lot of service if they’re well cared for.

My 03 Lightning has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. The only one I've had with comparable reliability was a 93 Civic DX with a 1.5L non-VTEC engine. I've had good luck with GEN3 SBC engines, but in 210K miles my Lightning through a P0125 code, that ended up being a bad thermostat, and had a noisy idler pulley bearing, but that's about it as far as issues it's caused me. When people ask, "how do I make my GEN2 Lightnings factory engine last a long time I say, "keep up with standard maintenance, stay with a stock pulley setup, be careful tightening the spark plugs." Not hard to do for anyone with decent mechanic skills. Tighten them down to where they won't back out, but don't wrench down on them. Quality oil is beneficial for any engine, not just Modulars. In fact I'd argue that good oil, that's kept clean with frequent oil changes is more important for a DOD equipped SBC than any other modern series of V8 engines I know of. Use an oil that's DEXOS approved BTW. I've found that all my Modular engine vehicles (99 GT, 03 Cobra, 03 Lightning) have been extremely reliable, with the worst issue being the composite manifold cracking at the thermostat housing on the 99 GT. When people say that 5.4L is unreliable I think oftentimes they base that on a stereotype or narrative. Yes the unusual bore and stroke could make you think unreliable, and the 3V engines gave them a bad reputation, but overall a 2V/4V 5.4L that's maintained properly is a very reliable engine. Hell my parents even own a 08 f150 with a 5.4L 3V with over 320K miles, and it runs smoother than my GEN3 Coyote truck. One thing the 3V's did do very well was they were very smooth and refined running engines, even compared to a modern Coyote. Too bad their cam phasers, and funky spark plugs gave them a bad reputation.

I think it is more common to see carbon build up in engines that aren't driven hard. An Italian tune up might have cleaned that out.

Went to Ranken in the 60's. Had a guy who's growth was stunted due to experimental medicine given him at birth. He was close to 5ft. All of his friends kidded him that when we worked on cars he was going to have problems. We were wrong. he use to sit on the inner fender and work on them. Today's cars, he'd have a real issue. As do people 6'6"! Atleast long arms are a plus!!

Honestly these 5.4 2V are great engines that can take abuse and known to last. It's about 95% same as a 4.6 2v engine in crown victoria police interceptors. This video truely impressed me about how much neglect the engine can take before it finally die.

And now we have the junk Ford puts out. From the company who brought us the 302, 300, and the 2v modular engines which all could go a Rey long time with basic maintenance…to what we have today….ecoboosts and the 5.0 which they ruined with “special” coated cylinder liners staring in 2018. They really want these newer cars to die an early death.

I own a F-150 FX4 Supercab 5.0L so it's doesn't have the coated cylinder liner, but it has given me zero issues in the nearly 13 years and 105K miles I've driven it. It has WAY more power than any standard 5.4L that it replaced and it gets better fuel mileage than any 4.6L out there.

You know what might be fun - scrape the gunk from the oil pan in an engine, put it in a glass jar with some solvent, then filter-out the metal bits, and show them to us. It's one thing to see the Forbidden Glitter oil, it's another thing to see an actual tablespoon of the metal that came out of the engine.

Not only was it lacking for some oil changes but also running water for coolant is a bad idea, the water passages are at least partially plugged also which means the engine probably ran hot in summers, probably never had the cooling system flushed. Looked like the oil rings were coked up and locked into the piston grooves so it was probably an oil burner. Oil filter element turning to plastic so the filter was probably bypassing dirty oil.

GEN2 Lightnings 5.4L uses the same 2V PI heads found in every other 2V 4.6L/5.4L made from 99 and newer. While they flow the same some heads are Windsors and some Romeos, and if I remember correctly their are some differences. I believe the cam retainers are different, and maybe the valve cover pattern. Also I thing the Windsor and Romeo timing cover bolt setup might be different as well, but I cant remember these things for sure. The later heads (around mid-03, and definitly 04) got the 8 threads instead of the 4 threaded heads. GEN2 Lightning engines are all Windsors I believe.

The orange spark plugs and valves tells me they ran some cheap "octane booster". I forget which brand(s) but a few of the octane boosters would make it look like you spilled cheeto dust inside the motor. Seems fitting for this since the coolant looks like it was filled with nacho cheese

Good work , I read in the Sean hyland book that you should never take the plugs out of a hot engine on those type heads. When hot a little minuscule amount of aluminum is removed from the plug hole threads by the spark plugs and causes bad things over time. Remove on cold engine only, keeps the threads to spec.

We love the blown out spark plug. As soon as you said 2 different plugs I knew. For those that have never experienced a plug blowout, it can be scary. I thought my engine exploded. BUT, it had 275K miles on it. After fixing it, I added 75k miles and then parked it in the garage where it has sat since 2012.

4:51 Are you sure about the rust? Could also be MMT as it is on the ceramic insulator, too. P.S.: the orange/beige exhaust valves of the left bank confirm MMT or leaded fuel. Did you see the almost closed passage ways for oil and water in the left head gasket?

the 2v Modulars, all of em, (4.6/5.4/6.8) may be my favorite engines. My 98 F150 has 350k on it and barely uses any oil. Still yields factory mpg and makes factory power. Almost every sensor is original. Synthetic oil changes every 5k and these will work and work and work. Their size can make working on certain things a challenge, depending on the chassis they're in, but by and large they are dead simple and dead reliable.

That one bank of worn skirts remind me of a Chevy 350 I tore down back in 1988 - engine came from a 1974 Malibu wagon and the drivers bank (1-3-5-7) had significant ridging in the cylinders - lots of taper while the right bank had virtually no wear. I always wondered about that.

One possibility I was thinking of is that the crankshaft flings more oil into one bank than the other. But given they rotate anti-clockwise when viewed from the front, I would have thought that more oil would go to the left hand bank than the right, rather than the other way around.

I used to own a 2002 HD F-150 and that engine was awesome. I live in the St. Louis area, so I hope that isn't the engine out of my old truck. I took good care of it while I had it, but I can't speak to the ownership after me. I sold it back in 2008 when the price of premium fuel was almost $5 a gallon.

I love the modular rotating assemblies. Even with very nasty oil they seem to hold together well. Cylinder heads are another story on both 2 and 3 valve engines. Every Ford engine has a caveat

You're thinking of the 5.4 3v, which didn't come out in the F-150 until 2004. 5.4 2v's are known for shooting them into space if you either under or over torque them.

I own a bunch of last generation Lincoln Town Cars. I have the spark plug repair kit from Summit Racing & keep a box full of the repair inserts. With the kit the total repair time is 15-20 minutes per cylinder. Most of that is getting debris out. Use the appropriate thread locker when installing the insert and you will never have a problem with that cylinder again.

The water pump scene was priceless. IMHO when you are banging those pistons out of the block, I would spray the bores down with some kind of real lubricant. Would lesson any damage to the block in general. Especially since you only blew out one side of the engine with the air wand.

When pulling the plugs, that looked like boostane residue or other additives for octane increase. You'll see this on the plugs and 02 sensors.

Since the advent of higher voltage electronic ignition systems, most Ford vehicles call for a .052 to .056 spark plug gap - not .034. The smaller gaps have not been used since the days of points and distributors.

Hello Eric, I love watching your videos and your tongue and cheek comedy. This comment is in reference to the Duramax diesel and your thoughts about the pump being driven with a slot and a key. I believe this is the normal way that one item drives another and allows for misalignment, if you don’t have allowance for misalignment, that won’t last at all. Anyway, maybe you can take a look into that. Thanks again.
