Explore the history of the 1937 Haitian Massacre, where thousands of Haitians were murdered on the orders of Rafael Trujillo.
--
When historians talk about the atrocities of the 20th century, we often think of those that took place during and between the two World Wars. But two months before the Rape of Nanking in China, and a year before Kristallnacht in Germany, a horrific ethnic cleansing campaign occurred on an island between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Edward Paulino details the 1937 Haitian Massacre.

Your right. The US has deposed elected Haitian president's, collapsed its agricultural sectors with American subsidized crop, later gave a halfhearted apology but continued the same practice. Occupied the country for nearly 20 years in 1914, during that time they rewrote the Haitian constitution to allow foreign governments mineral and resource rights, also took all the nations gold diamonds and silver for "safe keeping". The US and western powers set a trade embargo against Haitian to limit its growth after its independence. The US and France owe Haiti a combined $20 Billion for forcing Haiti to pay for the freedom of formally enslaved men, women and children.

Mixtape Mania you are correct. My grandmother survived trujillos era so I feel like it's my duty as a Dominican to remind people of Trujillo's atrocities. There are many Dominicans today who reminisce about Trujillo because of the positive changes he implemented in the Dominican economy. Some even have the audacity to say that we need another man like him. Make no mistake what this man did is abhorrent. The 1804 Haiti massacre was carried out against the French population and French Creoles (or Franco-Haitians) remaining in Haiti following the Haitian Revolution, by soldiers, mostly former slaves, under orders from Jean-Jacques Dessalines. He had decreed that all suspected of conspiring in the acts of the expelled army should be put to death.[1] From early January 1804 until 22 April 1804, squads of soldiers moved from house to house throughout Haiti, torturing and killing entire families.[2] Between 3,000 to 5,000 people were killed.

At the end of the day, you can’t change the past. You can only aim to create a better future. The Bible says, “If you forgive people’s sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you”. (Matt 6:14). In other words, if you cannot forgive then how can you expect God to forgive you? The Dominican Republic even has the Bible in their flag. They should publicly repair this damage as should Haiti repair the damage done by Dessalines. But honestly before Trujillo came to power, there wasn’t much tension between both peoples after Soulouque’s reign in Haiti (who tried to reinvade the DR many times) but then was overthrown and exiled and that stopped immediately. So maybe about 60 years there was some sort of peace, until Trujillo harped on the differences between both peoples and that there could be NO fusion between them etc. he created a propaganda machine against Haiti. To this day, that negative sentiment lives on in the heart of Dominicans. But what would Jesus Christ do? Both sides will pay if they do not start forgiving each other and moving on. How can God forgive those who cannot forgive their neighbors on earth?

Don't blame this on human nature. This is human hate, human manipulation jealousy, greed, and power. Human nature is just that. We were not burn with the nature to hate. We as toddlers, we knew nothing of being tyrannical colonizing, and genocidal psychos, who destroyed whole civilizations and did their best to erase them from existence. Every man women and child born into this world was given natural given sense to know the difference between right and wrong. And we were all born the same meaning we all have right to life and rights. Whenever some speaks of hate, divide and conquer follows right after. There is always someone who manipulates the masses to commit atrocities in the name of greed, power, religion, hate, and that oh so famous word of manipulation. Human nature is is your excuse for accepting these things to happen. Human nature is just that. Human and nature. It is not nuclear or biological(man made) threats to all humanity. Human nature is not to destroy the human race or the earth in which were all born. The sooner we understand that, the sooner we will understand the importance of all human life.

This does not even begin to mention the cruelty and terror Trujillo put the country under. The man was a murderer, he tortured and killed everyone who was rumored to be against his regime. I know people whose grandparents were killed or sought after to be killed during the dictatorship. People had family taken away never to be seen again, plantations, and lands. Everything belonged to "el jefe". It is taught in high school. There's a booked called 'El Masacre se pasa a pie' (The Masacre is crossed on foot, Masacre being the river that naturally separates Haiti and DR and that supposedly got its name for the atrocity commited against haitians at the border during the dictatorship) that talks about this. Trujillo was one of the most covered topics during my high school education in the DR, so I don't get where these people saying no one talks about it are coming from.

Haiti occupied the DR for 22 years, Dominicans fought back in 1844 and Haitians tried to invade again until the 1860s, when they helped the DR fight against Spain. Apparantly, things had been dying out before this time. But Rafael Trujillo brought it back in full swing and many Dominicans today are like him.

Funny thing is that Trujillos grandmother was haitian... But this is not just what this video missed. Sometimes the circumstances makes us see things differently.

Thats just self hatred at its finest..he also believed in whitening the country so clearly his actions aimed to bleach out any blackness out of himself and his people.

@Eric Gregory there are plenty of celebrities who are Haitian and part of Haitian and don't have a problem with it, Eric Andre for example. Trujillo was a monster who committed an atrocity that even he knew was wrong. Trujillo tried to hide it.

You should read the book "The Farming of Bones" by Edwidge Danticat. This event was actually mentioned in the book.

The Dominican people regret this event’s and for the record we killed Trujillo to save us from him. With the help of the cia but we did it . And at that time the entire island was on turmoil I guess the least fortunate paid the price 👎

It felt wrong to press the "thumb up"... but this was one of the strongest videos you have made to date. Beautifully put, with little/calm animation and music. Made me shed a tear for the lives of Africans (connecting to the people of color being killed here) during history... all the terrible things that has been made due to color. Its so sad.

We all know about it in the states. I wasn’t aware people still have been censored this entire time. I have to say one thing, and I’m Jamaican; this was not the sold event to turn neighbor against neighbor on the island of Hispaniola.

I'm from DR, born there but can to the US at 9 months of age. Dude this is just awful, and now I see why my country despise Trujillo and all his doings. Corruption in my country still is at a high with the rich living life, and the poor suffering. The Haitians on the other hand, our relationship after Trujillo has gotten better though, even after the atrocities committed.

Ultimately, the pseudoZionist New World Order has controlled the United States since its inception. It controls the United States, Haiti and many other countries to this day. That's why there's so much "austerity" around the world. But, there's a global revolution coming. They and their minions continue to be exposed.

The moca massacre Carried by Haiti 🇭🇹--) The dramatic story “Memory for my departure from the island of Santo Domingo on April 28, 1805? (“Memoria de mi salida de la isla de Santo Domingo el 28 de abril de 1805?), the Dominican Jurisconsultist Gaspar de Arredondo y Pichardo, reveals that forty (40) children were beheaded in the Church of Moca, and that the bodies were found in the presbytery, which is the space that surrounds the main altar of some churches. This tragedy, unparalleled in the history of the island, was part of a genocide that killed thousands of Dominicans, many of them slaughtered. This catastrophe, also without precedent in the islands history, was carried out by the troops of the Haitian general named Henri Christophe, who was led by Jean Jacques Dessalines, when they were retreating from the Spanish part of the island during their attempted invasion of that year in 1805.

0:19. Wrong info. First of all in 1915-1917 Turkey wasn’t a country yet. It was still a part of Ottomon Empire. So you can’t say modern-day Turkey. Small reminder that Ottomon was multinational empire. Second genocide was never proven. And third why no one talking about Khojaly massacre which was proven. Don’t get me wrong I love all the races in the world and I don’t have any problem with any race. Races and people of countries shouldn’t be hold responsible for what their governments did.
