My Dad was a UH-1 Med-Evac pilot in the Army during the Viet Nam war, flying out of Plieku 67-68. His flight logs during the Tet Offensive in 1968 were very telling of what those guys faced. The daily take off/landing cycles they made was staggering. My pop had a number of aircraft that were so shot up they would never be flown again. I will forever remember my childhood years at Fort Rucker Alabama. Every afternoon at 4:30 every Huey that was airworthy would fly over the main parade grounds on the base, 4 across, as far as you could see. We would always just stop everything we were doing and watch. The ground would shake! The men who flew these into battle had one of the most rugged machines ever built. America air power at it's best!

I remember those times. I lived near Runkle in Elba. Only Hueys in service are Air Force now. Sad.

I had a ride in a Huey when I was growing up as my dad was in the Canadian military. I also stop what I'm doing & look into the sky for a huey when I hear the Whoop Whoop of the blades. The military has since upgraded their hueys to four rotors & it doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Those Huey helicopters are serving a longer working life than most human beings. Their performance never declined over time, unlike a human being. Amazing!

Not sure if this was B model, but it was a Baby Huey. Just back in country from R&R, heading back to my company . This was my ride. My company was in contact and this bird was packed with ammo crates. I squeezed in. We went down the runway, nose down, dragging the skids until we could lift off. Never did that before. When we got out to the company, dropping like rock at about 30ft, the crew shoved the crates out the door. We almost touched down, they pushed me out the door and were gone in about 10 seconds. Hairiest ride I ever had on al slick.

None of the Seawolves that I saw (HAL-3) in-country never had a footprint of the American Chicken on their sides. They came to our rescue any number of times! Great guys doing a fantastic job. I was on PBRs.

HAL-3 Just released a documentary on the Sea wolves called " Scramble the Seawolves". I was too young to serve but have a former Seawolf for a friend and he is one of the most squared away fellas I know.

In '73 to '79 ; the US Army figured out it cost $1000 per hour ; to fly a UH-1 H (maint. cost/ parts etc. and so forth)------a standard Huey could fly for 2 hours with a 1/2 hr reserve-----Attach the 2 each fuel bladders in the door gunners well of 50 gallons each and you could fly longer-----The standard fuel capacity was 209 gallons; of which 206 were 'usable'---Pilots always kept the fuel capacity in mind and landed 2 hours after they took off; but then you could use the standard issue Government Credit Card if you were flying from Bangor, ME to Newark, NJ----with the C.O.s approval----Mostly we flew from and to military airfields...

Yeaasssssss man I get so excited just hear one fire up. God please let me fly in one before I die. Oooh man I have always wanted to be a pilot from the time I could walk I had that little electric helicopter that suspended from a wire it just went up down forward and backward I'd play with it until the battery's went dead. I cost my wonderful mom and DAD a small fortune in batteries. I loved that toy so much. I wonder why they stopped making them? I'd buy one right now lol if they made them still. Awesome toy. Awesome helicopter.

Is that the only one with guns
@edwardmartis1539
@edwardmartis1539 7 лет назад
NO !!!-C's /--D's/H's/ M's had guns too-----I lot of these models had 'kits' for quad M-60's/ Mini-guns and 2.75" rockets .......A LOT of standard H models had the "kits" already installed below the floor-board / cabin area.....To turn a standard H model into a full-blown gun-ship did not take very long; with the 'kit' previously installed...........There was a single switch on the console which read 4000 and just below 6000------Meaning 4000 rds/ min and 6000 rds per minute.........a 3 second burst sounded like a buzz-saw---VERY effective !....And then the empty shells would fall like a rainstorm.......I have seen this a lot of times....
