Uhoh! Tim Fails Inspection! Truck & Trailer Tuesday with Trooper Hoover

Trooper Hoover inspects the trailer for Tractor Time with Tim! He takes a close look at the hitch, chains, break away system, axles, brakes, frame, ramp storage and more. The trailer is in worse condition that we thought due to salt and other road debris. These are all issues that might be on your trailer!

The D.O.T. officers I've met in my state for commercial inspections are the same way, really laid back. They'd rather explain to you what's going on and why, than give you a ticket. Its like they're more passionate about trucks and trailers than the guys actually driving the trucks and trailers lol.

This kind of educational video does more to inform people and improve safety on the roadway than 20 weigh stations. Many people just don't have a ton of experience with trailers. They usually just hook it up and go.

@@robbiebooth2980 the emergency brake is there in case the safety chains fail after the trailer becomes detached. You don't want the trailer to come unhitched and lock up the brakes while still on the safety chains. That would make a bad situation worse.

This was a really good video, thank you for posting it. With as many miles as I do on the freeway with my farm trailers, I pretty much treat it like a commercial trailer situation. Rewired my gooseneck because the breakaway was inoperable, the plug was cracked and filled with water, the brakes had been cut because the wiring had been rerun with 18 gauge by the previous owner and had gotten smoked. Pretty ridiculous. Now all the lights work, brakes work again, and all it needs is new lumber and some black touch up paint. Keep up the good content. 👍

@shawnwright2356
@shawnwright2356 5 лет назад
A chain is not designed to take a load while twisted. The chain could fail and snap. Especially with a shock load. Safety chains should be the proper length to begin with. My trailers are designed so the safety chains can be adjusted in length. In a pinch the safety chains can be raised up off the pavement using a rope or bungee cord. Coiled safety cables are another option.
@dougshrader7721
@dougshrader7721 5 лет назад
Agree with Shawn, as a farmer we knew a twisted chain will break under a load, I'd use a bungee cord instead.
@tiredoldmechanic1791
@tiredoldmechanic1791 5 лет назад
I was surprised to hear that they allowed the chains to be twisted. It seems like a bungee would be a better option. You never want the chains to be needed because the trailer will go to the right with the crown of the road, pulling the rear of the tow vehicle with it, turning the tow vehicle into oncoming traffic.
@akbychoice
@akbychoice 5 лет назад

Hi Tim, Glad to see Truck and Trailer Tuesday, you're making the world safer. Here's a small tip to share - we just bought a big dump trailer and for the first time need a 2 5/16 ball. To prevent confusion, I painted the 2 inch hitch bars and hitches fluorescent orange, and the 2 5/16 hitches fluorescent green. If you were to put the bigger hitch on the smaller ball there would be big trouble. Bonus - the hitch is easier to see in the backup camera.

Alot of companies, including all brand new driveshafts ive had custom made, are never painted. They all say the paint will imbalance it. Yay or nay, i still dust a little on them, because i cant think that surface rust would be balanced better than a clean surface with a dust coat on it.

We took apart my father-in-law's horse trailer brakes last summer to inspect them. It had been sitting parked for most of the summer before out in New Mexico. 3 of the drums looked ok, the 4th one however, when we pulled the drum off, a mouse skeleton fell out. As we dug around in the nest it had made, we found a snake skeleton about 2 foot long coiled up in there as well. That was probably the best/worst thing I've ever found.

A helpful couple of things for you to do. You can get a "D" ring like climbers use that has a flip lock and you can use the safety chain slot to attach it to the truck. Another thing that helps guard the wire is even if you have that style hitch you can open safety pin loop and slide the wire in the safety loop on the safety pin. That will keep your trailer wire from ever touching the ground and you won't have to worry about it being to short for turns because it's right over the tongue. A few little tricks from delivering trailers and rv's that I learned along the way.

I stoppped buying FLUID FILM by the spray can and now I buy it by the 5 gallon bucket and use a sprayer as recommended by the manufacturer (Note: Do not use a garden sprayer). Best - Michael

Brother thank you for the video, as county mountie in texas. I appreciate it, I see daily dangerous trailers failure to secure loads. My best partners mother was killed when unsecured load fell on her car killing her. I take it very serious, and I wish to impress upon pick up owners secure your cargo, it takes a few minutes, but can save you a lot money and anguish.

I have to appreciate the fact that officer Hoover made a point, several times, to differentiate between commercial operation and private operation and that private operation is not subject to enforcement of regulations. Doesn't mean anybody should be stupid, reckless or irresponsible in their private use of trailers, just that we are not subject to state revenue extortion. Regulations, codes and statutes are for commercial transportation.
