The Uintah Railway was a 75 mile railroad that operated from 1904 to 1939. It ran in northwestern Colorado from Mack, Colorado to Watson, Utah. Featuring the original film footage of the new 3 foot narrow gauge articulated locomotives in 1926 on the 7.5% grades of Baxter Pass. Our video combines the historic motion picture film from the Lucian Sprague family and the Colorado Railroad Museum archives with vintage photographs from the collections of several avid Uintah Railway enthusiasts. Modelers, historians, and photographers will all want to add this video of one of Colorado's most unique narrow gauge railroads to their collections.

Thought everyone might like to know that this film was taken by Lucien Sprague who at the time was president of the Uintah Railway and him and master mechanic Scott Schafer were the ones who designed the mallets. Baldwin Locomotive works who built the mallets gave lucien Sprague a movie camera so he could film their locomotives in action so they could see how they operated on the grades and curves. The public never saw this film or were aware it even existed!!! That is how rare it is!! A paramount photographer named E.K. Edwards shot some film of the railroad when the mallets were built also and it is included with this. This is the only film known to exist of the Uintah Railway.

I saw the Uintah Railway video. I know quite a bit about that Railway because my Grandfather was the superintendent of the Gilsonite Mine in Dragon Utah. Gilsonite also known as Uintahite was used in making all sorts of products before plastic. The steering wheel in old cars was made out of it. That's why when the paint wore off it was black underneath. It was also used as a additive in making steel. My Grandfather decided to buy White Trucks to hall the Gilsonite out of the mine thus the beginning of the surmise of the RR. There was a small Mining Town at Dragon and when my Grandmother would ride the RR she would say "By the time we got there my ass was dragging!

My GreatGrandfather was serioiusly injured on one of the articulating engines on Baxter pass...never worked again, died in 1911.

Bill Serve Ah....Are you sure? The articulateds never arrived until 1926 and 1927, yet you claim your grandfather was injured on one...then DIED IN 1911?

Love looking at this video of the old uinta railway train, I live close to the old ghost towns of Dragon, Atchee, Watson and Rainbow. go there when I can just to relive the old mining days and dig up history. My Great Grandmother and family ran the boarding house in Atchee Colorado.

Ruby Lutton? The Uintah Hotel was called the Lutton boarding house, was there another boarding houses at Atchee?

This was the train line that transported thousands of tons of giant dinosaur bones that paleontologist Earl Douglas collected in the early 20th century in what is now Dinosaur National Monument. They were sent from Dragon to Mack/Fruita on this train where they were transferred to other trains and shipped to eastern universities and museums. The drive across Baxter Pass is amazing!

The 1st Uintah Articulated locomotive was running in 1926, I know of no wrecks with #50 or #51 that injured workers, but the Shay locomotives did kill a number of workers on Baxter Pass and the Baldwins had some killer wrecks on the line to Mack. #50 derailed on it's 1st try up Baxter, too much power for the corner, the factory test track did not consider the 7.5% grade, only the tight curve and so the reason for their setting the turning limit as it was. Modifications made at Atchee to the front set of wheels fixed the problem, and the Shays and smaller Baldwins were on their way out. #51 was brought on line a few years later.

brake failure in 1923 was the last fatalities I know about.

As far as I know the old 2-6-6-2s were scraped in the 1970's. Attempts to retrieve them were thwarted by an unstable government.

Has anyone got any history on Baxter's pass, as in some of the accidents that happened throughout its history? The reason I ask, is because my wife and I took a few rides over the pass when I lived near there, some were at night and some in the day. I am not a ghost believer, but we seen and hears some pretty weird stuff each time we went over it.
