Based upon the most recent available data, the annual cost of detention for the year ending March 2019 was £89 million, down from £108 million for the previous year... there are roughly 30 million taxpayers, and roughly 80% of taxpayers pay the basic rate of tax (20%) the average salary is 30k annually. That means for the average Brit they would pay £6,000 in tax. The amount per person which would have to be paid were every taxpayer to pay the same amount to fund the amount it costs to hold illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees etc. would be 89,000,000/30,000,000 = 2.96 (that means the cost to us Brits would be £2.96 a year). However, because the top 1% of earners account for a third of all income tax takings that would mean that annual cost per person not in the 1% would be an even smaller figure (roughly £2.00). The average Brit will be paying only 0.03% of all their tax on this (£2 as a percentage of £6000). Given, on a side note, that regularised immigration itself provides a net contribution in taxes and investment into our economy (i.e. making the British people money) the overreaction here towards migrants is phenominal. What is happening, however, is that part of the HOs expenditure is given to these companies who will have competed to take on the contract and much of our money is taken away and is given to them for their own profit (estimated in some cases to be as large as 30% profit margins for some contracts... i.e. taking in 30% more than what it costs for the upkeep of migrants). Surely then your argument shouldn't be made upon the basis of upkeep cost or the cost to hold migrants because we know the actual cost of this excluding profit and it is a low figure (the figure of £89 million incidentally includes accommodation and upkeep). Surely your outrage should be placed towards the inefficiencies of outsourcing taxpayers money to private companies for them to administor the process and make a tidy profit?

Many of us Brits also forget that we have reciperal agreements with other countries meaning that between, 4.2 to 5.5 million Brits live abroad at any one time. 700000 in the US alone.
