As conflict continues in Ukraine, the Army is boosting its presence in Eastern Europe this summer.
Thousands of British troops are conducting military exercises in the region including the King’s Royal Hussars Battlegroup in Poland.
Getting tanks, equipment and heavy armour to them is a Theatre Enabling Group which has based its headquarters at Sennelager in Germany.
Rob Olver explains.

When tanks are on the move, boy do you know they are on the move. I was living in Sennalager 1975-1979 when there was a mass movement of tanks one night. It wasn’t the noise that woke me it was the vibration of the tanks through the ground and we didn’t live near the station yard where the tanks were being loaded. They were the Chieftain tanks 56 tons of tank, multiplied by many. A Challenger2 tank holds the record for the longest ever recorded kill shot. And the Challenger crew are very well trained indeed.

At least they changed the pledge for Challenger 3 from only 138, to the full 227 vehicles. Keep in mind, Chally 3 is not really our "future" tank, but an interim upgrade to bring Challenger 2 to a properly modern standard (it's very outdated in current form) until the 2040s, where we can expect a totally new vehicle to be produced to better suit the modern battlefield. We need a more achievable program to return skills for design/ production of heavy armoured vehicles, as it's been decades since we made a new tank in the UK, and all the old engineers who worked on the Challenger programs are long since retired.

My Dad started his army career in the 1st Tank Regiment and went on to be an Artificer and eventually a Captain. He was 2IC of 94 Locating Regiment Workshops at one point. It may surprise some that even back in the seventies 94 operated drones for surveillance much like drones are being used now in Ukraine. In the eighties the drones very much resembled the Turkish drones being used to great effect today.

I have to say that the way the war in Ukraine has been playing out it's quite apparent the technical advantage goes to Ukranian military hands down over the Russians and I don't mean that in just who has the better equipment but it's showing in the abilities of the Ukrainian soldier as far as hands on skills with drones specifically. The Russian soldiers are way behind and do not show the skillset needed to function on the battlefield. It's very possible gaming is the reason. Western tech is probably not so common in Russia.
