Not being funny here, but austerity policies are usually DEFINED by tax raises (amongst other things). It's only the tory version of austerity that didn’t include that part (for obvious reasons).

Raising taxes won't avoid austerity in the long run. It will actually cause the economy to shrink because there won't be any investment and there will be brain drain because people with high paying jobs will emigrate. £25,000,000,000 divided by the ~30,000,000 working age adults in the UK is roughly £830 per year each. That is £16 per week...or £2:30p a day. If that's what it takes to rebuild public finances then I'll happily pay it ( the £2:30p part ), but our public finances must be in a dire state if that is all it takes. I can and will pay it because I've been working for the past 30+ years and now earn a slightly above average salary. Still can't afford to stay warm this winter but will be willing to make this sacrifice if this will fix the public finances and set my country on the right track. I don't think any of this is real though. Deep down...I think this is a made up number. £2:30p could buy a portion of chips in some parts of our country - and that could mean a whole lot to someone who has nothing to eat. For every £1 that I earn there are another £3 that is offshored to the foreign company that bought the British company I worked for. They offshored all the profits to their country and then started offshoring all my colleagues jobs to the developing world. If our government is not willing to step in and solve these simple issues then we should assume they've been bought off - and things will only get worse for us.

Possible solutions: -Change the "gold-plated" (and unsustainable) public sector pensions, so they reflect more what we have in the private sector -Remove the IHT exemption for pensions -Put a flat rate of pensions tax relief in place for every taxpayer, at 20% -Reform the State Pension "triple lock" system to reflect the IFS's recommendations -Reassure investors, firms and wealthy taxpayers that they are welcome in the UK by immediately putting to bed any notion of changing CGT, Business Relief or a wealth tax. Like it or not, we need millionaires and we compete in a global marketplace with the likes of Dubai, Ireland and Singapore for these valuable people who create jobs, innovation and wealth.

Raising taxes on an already highest record taxes will cause austerity. The economy is flat lining and shows no pickup. Raising tax on people will mean they have even less to spend which will obviously prevent the economy from growing. It’s pretty obvious.

Those with £10mill+ in assets, they pay less than 1% and keep avoiding, mean while the rest of us, working and middle class are paying up to 50% (when council tax is included). Cost of energy was meant to be controlled by government (Thatcher's model), the huge hike in that cost alone and all the mega profits going to share holders puts a stranglehold on society functioning properly, when you add the same pattern with food, there's no more money in the system for growth, except in the hyper rich who Rishi gave 750bn + to, writings on the wall.
