Parliament will debate a petition in January calling for tougher laws to ensure supermarkets act fairly when buying produce from British farmers - with claims the industry is “on its knees.”
The Get Fair About Farming campaign has received more than 100,000 signatures as Sky's Dan Whitehead explains.

Farmers need to unite across the country and open their own supermarkets like an old school cooperative and cut out the greedy supermarkets. And only supply to private butchers and green grocers again. They would get better profits as well while still keeping food cheaper.

I think the farmers have the power and need to take it back. That's said the supermarkets are ruthless and will import produce from the lowest bidder. Same problem in Norway... The supermarket has way to much power and taking all the profit from the farmer and at the same time driving up the prices for the consumers. Only thing to stop this is that farmers take control of the retail and sell their own products at a "farmer owned" supermarke. Imports does also have to be regulated to so imported goods does not squeeze out the local produced food.

EU are banning 2 chemicals every year, we have to abide by these rules in the current trading agreement, a lot of farmers have had to stop growing certain types of crops as weeds can only be killed with the chemicals in question, so they either shut up shop or change crop, this is now having a knock on effect. Farmers get about 2p per litre of milk so I was told by my old boss, who ran a family milk farm in Yorkshire on his holidays, this was in 2008. If anything Brexit has made us way more reliant on the EU and the wider world, including the U.S when that trade deal will get done.

I think the problem sometimes may lie in miscommuncations between the supermarkets and the farmers due to the practice of middlemen such as those in the packaging business. It is similar to the situation where landlords and tenants both suffer when real estate agents are trying to place their interest as the first priority. Better laws should be in place to prevent the prevalence of such a situation. The government should support local farmers as it is important for a country to be able to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.

Contractual fairness is a reasonable expectation for any individual or business no matter which sector its in, and lord knows employment contracts in the UK heavily favor employers (since they write them) but unfortunately farmers cannot force a supermarket to buy their produce, just as a supermarket cannot force farmers to sell them their produce, this equally applies to price and works both ways.

Contract laws are standard to English law. That said, near the end, they also mentioned the idea that a lot of these farms utilize a middle-man as part of their distribution/sales process. This makes me wonder if there are even contracts in these types of cases. Contracts are easily drafted, finalized, signed, and enforced through the legal system.

@@stevennguyen4993 This would indicate that the middleman is legally responsible to both the supermarket and the supplier and perhaps, but not necessarily, the source of the perceived unfairness.

Same problems in Australia and we effectively have a duopoly. Our government aren't motivated to do anything. Your farmers need to try and band together and offer their produce at better prices than the supermarkets in some sort of direct to consumer program and/or local green grocers..

@ChrisKeziahHyde

The problem arises that if farmers get their way the supermarket will just push the costs onto customers. With the supermarkets achieving record profits and giving out bonuses to ceo's and shareholders. We need to both make it fairer for farmers whilst trying to stop supermarkets from taking more money off the public. Yes I acknowledge that supermarkets are important and vital to our country but so are our farmers and without them we'd be even more worse off.
