With his eye firmly on the next election, Jeremy Hunt says he is delivering "much-needed help in challenging times".
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But there were few surprises in this highly trailed budget. First, the giveaways: the centrepiece was the National Insurance cut of 2p in the pound for employees, the second 2p cut in six months.
Full child benefit will now be paid to households where the highest-earning parent earns up to £60,000 - up from the current £50,000 - with partial child benefit for those earning up to £80,000.
Fuel duty stays frozen, with the 5p cut for petrol and diesel kept for another year.
And to pay for them, two Labour policies: tax breaks will be abolished for UK residents who are not domiciled here for tax purposes, after four years of residence.
And the windfall tax on the profits made by oil and gas companies will be extended for another year to 2029.
Tax breaks will also be scrapped for the owners of short-term holiday lets. And there'll be a new tax on vaping products.

Sure it is controversial no doubt but our skills gap is just going to grow if we don't have immigration at the moment. We don't have to the capacity to innovate as all the young entrepreneurs have moved to places like the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand where pay is higher and taxes are lower for people who want to grow their business. @@DARKINBLADE. , yes and the reason why we can't reduce the work hours is because the population has aged so much and the pool of younger people has got so small that a reduction in work hours will just hurt the economy even more as not enough tax revenue is being generated collectively. Sure you can try and tax the extra billionaire and get a few tens of millions more in taxes but the State budget is £1.1 billion with most of that money coming from low and middle class earners as a collective. Gen Zs not having children, whether that be due to the rise in people choosing to be childless for a stress free life or more people identifying as LGBTQ means that fertility rates will decrease even further. Unless us Gen Zs learn to embrace the old tradition starting a family while living with parents then this problem will get worse in the long run. @inbb510
@inbb510 2 месяца назад
@@DARKINBLADE. , the problems facing the UK are not unique. They are problems in Europe too. First of all, we had two big unexpected externalities, one being COVID and another one being the Ukraine war. That is going to cause governments to borrow a lot during the crisis reducing fiscal space in the short to medium term in its aftermath. Any politician who seriously thinks that tax rises weren't inevitable for all economic backgrounds after COVID borrowing is either not fit to be office or is just playing party politics. Furthermore, we have a falling fertility rate and an aging population which means that the overall costs of the NHS will severely increase either way as elderly care and end of life care are some of the most resource intensive and expensive to provide. It is the elderly and retirees that use the health service the most and are the most vulnerable so a bigger proportion and absolute numbers of them with less taxpayers is going to increase tax. Therefore, if you want responsible spending and to grow the economy, there will have to be cuts made somewhere. This isn't the US where we have the world's most powerful reserve currency where we can endlessly borrow at extremely low rates. Why do you think the mini-budget crisis occured in the first place? Furthermore, the idea that Tories are trying to privatise the NHS just doesn't hold up to scrutiny when looking the figures. In 2022-2023, the NHS budget was £180 billion compared to £141 billion in 2016. So more than £350 million pound a week has been added to the NHS since Brexit. The UK and Europe are some of the most taxed places on the planet. With the NHS in disarray in every country of the union and state pensions being best described as meagre and frugal, I fail to see the logic behind cutting national insurance contributions. The Tories are clearly still heading towards a semi or fully privatised healthcare system and cutting national insurance contributions and therefore the NHS budget works in favour of their argument for doing so. It also helps with their ever rising pension age eligibility. They also seem to think that offering tax cuts now will somehow work as a vote getter in the upcoming general election. This to me, appears to be nothing more than a cheap gimmick and yet another example of gross governance mismanagement.

@@inbb510not a big ask to be honest - our NHS is def on its knees. There's way toi many 'managers' and 'deputy managers' on the NHS payroll - that's where the bulk of the money is going, much apart from the PFI initiative set up by the War Criminal, Tony Blairs' Labour Government. Essentially, the building of any new hospital now, benefits the shareholders handsomely and it's set up in such a way, that it never really gets paid off - a never ending debt, if you will - that's where a lot of NHS funding goes to also. That's precisely why the NHS can be classified as a financial black hole. Yer again, a Labour Government f@#king things up financially - they never learn !
@inbb510
@inbb510 2 месяца назад
@@jamesbarbour8400 , the problem of the NHS is way more complex. For example, we have shortage of GPs but it isn't as simple as just taking in more high skilled immigrant doctors as General Practitioners are a very British aspect to a healthcare system and these jobs don't really exist outside Britain. Therefore this makes it extra hard to recruit and fill the skills gap. Furthermore, we have an aging population and a lower fertility rate. End of life care and elderly care are some of the most resource intensive and most expensive operations done in the NHS. A bigger number and proportion of them in the UK population and a lower pool of younger taxpayers means that taxes will increase massively for all economic backgrounds. This is a general problem seen in Western Europe. Furthermore, a lot of software used in the NHS is old but the bureaucracy of the public sector makes it extremely hard for the government to be incentivised to innovate as innovation involves a lot of investment and risk-taking. This in turn makes it politically challenging for any incumbent political party to make long-term plans as much of the policies with regards to NHS is mainly focused on building more hospitals and reducing waiting times. Because the political cost of failed innovation (e.g. let's say the computer scientists failing to produce an updated software and computer system during the 5 year political term) is too big and not palatable to the average voter. There are also unexpected externalities such as COVID and the Ukraine war which has caused the government to borrow a lot and made an already tight fiscal space even more tighter. This meant that there is currently still very little fiscal space for adequate pay rises for the public sector without going into more deficit and borrowing which is bad for the long-term.

@@inbb510 I am fully aware of Japan's healthcare system as I live here. If you think it is doing fine, you are grossly misinformed. All that you end up with is a mess of bureaucracy and patients having to fork out for expensive operations only to have to apply for the bulk of what is termed as 'excessive treatment fees' to be paid back. For those on continual expensive treatment, then they are issued with a disability card and have to apply every year for 'Independence support medical expenses' which reduces the treatment for their ailment to 10% and the price paid at the hospital and stipulated (by the patient) pharmacy is capped to a certain amount according to one's overall income. There is a balance to be made, it is shown that lower taxes increase amount of people who pay tax but you obviously get less tax per person. @inbb510 2 месяца назад
Because the problem isn't that simple. Many people in London having wealth over £1 million but that's because things are much more expensive in London. They have really high mortgages too. Also, successful companies have many buildings so if you add the assets up, they can easily reach hundreds of millions. If you tax companies too much, you pretty much stifle innovation within the country cos why innovate when you try to grow you just get slapped with a fat 70% wealth tax. Do you realise why Europe is stagnating and America is booming? Furthermore, we have low fertility with an aging population so arbitrarily taxing the rich is just kicking the can down the road until we will have to raise taxes again to make up for the shortfall in workers. By the time that happens a country will become so unattractive and uncompetitive to do business they leave which means lower investment within the country, and the country gets poorer in the long term. If taxing rich people gets more poor people to work then you may have a point, but if it just means extending the lifespan of an unsustainable welfare system as it currently stands then you are literally just burning successful people's cash and no-one wins.
