PURE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 British Hip Hop has never gotten the respect that it’s more than earned. As a young teen (13yo in 1988), just gone up to the Comprehensive, & my new best mate, (who came from a town miles away), was bang into British Hip Hop, & brought me copies of his new albums on tape for me, like every few days he’d hand me a handful of tapes. In turn I’d hand over copies of the latest Run DMC, NWA, Terminator X, PE, Ice T, 2 Live Crew, ect Before that I was listening to PE, Run DMC, Sugar Hill, Kool Moe Dee, BDK, Cold Crush, ect ect. Now, I was introduced to Rodney P, Demon Boyz, Mc Duke, Dominant Force, Overlord X, Krispy 3, Newtrament Ruthless Rap Assassins, Richie Rich, Cookie Crew, Wee Papa Girl Rappers ect. I’m amazed Overlord X isn’t included in this mix, he, Silver Bullet, Braintax, Gunshot, Blade, MC Tunes, Son Of Noise, Dizzy Heights, Brotherhood, MC Mell’O, II Tone Committee, 2 The Top, London Posse, City Limits Crew, Family Quest, The Wild Bunch, Killa Instinct, Smiley Culture(record of a police stop & search), Cash Crew (UK version of PE/Gangsta Rap way back in 1985!), Rodney P & Hijack, put the BritCore/UK Hip Hop scene on the map. Before those pioneers British rappers like Derek B(RIP) imitated their American brothers. It wasn’t till Ice T heard Hijack & signed them to his label, that U.K. Hip Hop got traction. Katch 22s “Diary of a Black man” (had a sample from The National Front - a white power movement in U.K. it was an anti racism record) getting banned from Radio 1 helped, too. Forget the year but was in the mid to late 80s & first rap record to get banned I think). I believe, if I remember correctly, that Ice Ts first ever rhymes to be released on wax were with Hijack. The original double album ltd release “Horns of Jericho” is worth its weight in gold now, literally. Like Rammellzees(RIP) & K Robs Beat Bop 12” is going for approx $5k/£3200!! Although, it does have original artwork by Basquiat(RIP) whom produced it, too. Some of the great rappers in America coincidentally are U.K. exports, Slick Rick, Young MC, MF Doom, & Monie Love. Big Up UK Hip Hop.

This is U.K. Hip Hop history right here! Why isn't there a documentary based on all of this? I've never been a fan of the British copying everything that arrives from America, but then we'd never have Grime or Dubstep without House and Garage. It's funny how U.K. Drill is now the global sound and people from England have the attention from the US. We didn't want their appreciation anymore due to the era of Grime lol.

Its alright though because in 1990's we well and truly took over the music scene: Same as my dad did in 1960s!

Great selection, (though I'd have added Katch 22, too) - what a golden age for British Music. Those guys had a mixture of technique, social awareness & rawness - paired with a lyrical & linguistic dexterity. Gone, but not forgotten.

I've just seen Dj Supreme/Dj Soopz on his Facebook group page big up your classic Britcore/British Hip Hop video and asking about who you are and asking if anyone knows you. I just left a comment on there and mentioned the little old school hip hop classics intro you and Dean (Twista) used to play before your back to back sets a few years back. Only just discovered this mix. Will have a listen on the way home from work. Great to hear a few more recent cuts in there too. Hope your keeping well mate. Big ups. Marky (Lale)

Hey faydz, great mix bud, wonder if you can help me with something? Been looking for a tune I had on a tape around 88. It was a British rapper, basically a dude goes to a club, wanted to skin up, doesn't have any skins, the chorus was something like 'a packet of rizzla papers'. Anyway, dude gets chucked out, losses his coat which had his keys in it, goes home tries to break in his house but gets nicked. Another line I remember is when the old bill ask him his address its 'I gave them the number of the door that I was knocking on but an hour before'. I know its a bit of a long shot but I loved it at the time. Its one of those tunes I was so gutted to loose.
