The 17-year-old sensation Emma Raducanu won the first series of the UK Pro League by beating Jodie Burrage coming back from a 6-2 super tie-break deficit and sealing a remarkable turnaround.
So Emma went from this to winning the US Open within the space of a year; if only Jodie understood the significance of this match!🤣 Just insane what Emma has managed to pull off.
These matches are brilliant - Don't know if its because theres no crowd or anything but you can really sense the tension between them, they both really wanted to win this. The match against Harriet Dart was the same as well, thanks for the uploads.
Lots of praise to UK Pro League Tennis. This is wonderful. I so hope that the LTA and all England club can support or duplicate this initiative to see more often our wonderful young stars.
and then.........2021 US OPEN CHAMPION.... WITHOUT DROPPING A SET..... OR EVEN PLAYING A SINGLE TIE BREAK INCLUDING THE QUALIFYING ROUNDS. Truly immense stuff and will never be seen or done again. Emma is a savage
Two fun facts. (1) Emma won her first non-slam WTA match 8 days before the start of the US Open (qualifiers). (2) In the qualifiers she was seeded 31, which meant that she was _not_ expected to get through: the 128 entrants competed for only 16 main draw places!
@Oliver Taylor Thanks, I see that now and I have edited my comment accordingly. It is the last time that I will rely on a BBC commentator for information!
US qualifiers aren't a WTA event. Her record on the WTA tour is 0-2 lol Her record in main draw grandslams 10-1 (13-3 if you want to include qualifiers)
@Oliver Taylor The Challenger Chicago 125 is a challenger series event, not a WTA tour event. Her only previouos appearences in WTA tour events are the Nottingham open and the Silicon Valley classic, both of which she lost in the first round
Just noticed that your comment, which I read earlier today, over on ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xp-uqi1vlss.html was deleted. But you are perfectly right, that is not her official channel and it mostly uploads videos snatched from elsewhere.
@@martin3203 Just looked, and it's not deleted! Which is actually a surprise. But why not an official Emma Radacunu channel, run by someone she knows and trusts? And why are the mainstream celebrity channels not carrying Emma's story, rather than these "computer voice" channels.
@@gamingtonight1526 Your comment is def. gone, try to clear your cache. If you still see your own post, then you were blocked by that channel. You can check it by logging out and go back to the same video. That channel is an impersonation account with the current name. All they need to do is to change the name to, say, "Emma Raducanu fan" and make it clear that they are not directly affiliated. Which they obviously are not. I suppose some of us ought to file a report with YT about the problem. Not the biggest problem either, they have posted nothing directly suggesting they are ER. I'm more upset with the copyright infringement. As to ER's media strategy, I don't know why it has not been better coordinated. After all, some of us check YT before we check IG and Twitter. I don't follow any celebrity channels, and I have only recently become aware of these channels that will snatch a text from a news source, run it through a text-to-voice generator and merge it with an assortment of still images. Worthless, if you ask me, and those I have seen don't seem to have enough subs to even monetize their uploads. I suppose you are looking forward to IW just as the rest of us?
*The commentator must be Burrage's father being that he questioned almost all of Emma's calls?* _Emma is the last person who would try to cheat with a bad call!_
A hundred per cent sure Emma could have won Wimbledon But due to what happened it was unfortunate However she will achieve this one day Not only that in all fairness has any one seen any woman at Wimbledon seen a young woman smile so much and the crowd was a hundred percent behind her Emma you’re world class ❤️
That was only her 2nd tournament at that level so it would’ve taken something impeccable for her to outright win Wimbledon but she looks like a star in the making. Go watch Sabine Lisicki if you haven’t, she’s one for the most adorable players on the court who plays with her heart on her sleeve.
@@robrob2982 Unreal. She’s only going on and making history being the first player ever to qualify and get to a final, but she’s gone on to outright win it without dropping a set. What a story as she’s hardly played at this level, and to have an all teenage final with Leylah who was great as well. A star is born I think there with Emma but hopefully with Leylah too and they both get to the top, they have that aura about them which the women’s game needs.
Never heard her name before wimbeldon and now I can't stop watching her match videos & funny interviews on loop. This is my favourite ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tYkJxA_esQ8.html
Think I'd like to contribute to the deification process. I love it when the announcer says Raducanu doesn't have as much pace on her backhand as Burrage does, and then on the next point Emma hits one that is supersonic.
We know that Emma Raducanu went on to make improvements and win the US Open Championship but I’d just like to have a word on how good Jodie Burrage is as well. She looks like a player who could step up to another level herself, maybe or maybe not to a level where she’s making some noise in a Slam tournament even if not winning it.
She should have made the main draw at the US Open. She had the better weapons against Vorgole and she had a match point but was sloppy on big points making errors.
Jodie Burrage was at the US Open as a qualifier she beat Robin Montgomery then lost to Stefanie Vögele, Harriet Dart was there too along with a couple of other GB women.
This was so interesting. You can see the resilience and some of the shot-making, and presumably she’s still getting more powerful. I’d love to hear from people with more technical knowledge that me on what else changed for her between then and the US Open
Right, as in all professional sports one of the most interesting things is that anyone person or team can win. By their very nature sports are unpredictable.
Mindset and consistency. The mental aspect of this game is a lot more important than most think. At this level, there isn't much separating players on the physical aspect. You see a lot of players play god-like in one round then totally collapse in the next. Mentally finding "the zone" and staying there for seven straight matches is what gets you the title.
Physiological changes to physique. She became more lean, muscular and taller, with a bit of natural Growth hormone spurt and a higher Testosterone build up with Oestrogens. Of course, with the Mental resilience.
@@squeedum4893 I think what you said is true right up to the top. If you've made it to a certain rating, you know how to win at tennis, now you must forget or avoid how to lose. This is mostly in your head minus injury, life circumstances, illness, etc....
@@tullochgorum6323 Possible. Emma's game is better understood now, though. Tactics were used by opponents both in San Diego (Round 1) and at Indian Wells (Round 2) to defeat her in straight sets. No doubt that she will benefit from some coaching and come back with remedies. However, unlike Steffi Graf or Serena W, she does have some inherent weaknesses that might limit her at some point.
@@rnrmenon2122 Time will tell - I'm far from expert enough to have a strong opinion. Whatever happens in her career, she'll always have that magic moment on Ash - which is more than 99% of pros on the tour can claim.
Also I’m kinda hoping Emma’s success will drive the other British girls to their own success. For way too long has there been an acceptance of mediocrity in women’s tennis over here. Emma is leading by example and I should hope her mates follow her unto glory🇬🇧💪🏻
Well if it's good for little girls and UK representation in a sport played by people with an above median income, then she should be put on the civil list.at the very least.
@@jgunner94 It’s the way the LTA was run for years, it was a one size fits all system and there was no catering to individual needs or flexibility and they funded very few players and didn’t bother in making it very accessible at all, it was extremely elitist. I mean until 2016 our best female player was Watson and our best male player (besides Murray) was ranked barely inside the top 200. Now we have 5 males and 6 females inside the top 150 for singles including 2 men and one woman in the top 30. And it’s thankfully since the LTA lopped off that bloody awful Roger Draper as the head that they’ve hard marked improvement in their players and development, a la Raducanu.
@@adamhogarth8244 yep. I enrolled ny grandson, a tall and athletic quarterChinese and English and half Swedish. The tennis club wasn't warm and welcoming at all and my grandson lost interest. I was the only one encouraging him. The club coaches and service people built class barriers though they live at the fringe and of the Highgate tennis club. ...
8 months ago based on ranking you'd say Jodie Burrage had a much better chance of winning a Grand Slam but that chance was virtually nil. Real life is bonkers.
Can you imagine John Mcenroe calling his own lines 😂 and with the moneys at steak... Definitely a few suspish calls here! - When Burrage says "I didn't call it out" in the tie break 56:45 🤣🤣🤣 that was well dodge - she new exactly what she was doing - her and the umpire should never play poker lol. Tough gig for the umpire mind
Delighted to find this. Wonderful. I do hope that we are able to see televised/streamed our young players during other grass or indoor tournaments. The grass season is perhaps quite short but is great to see our home players elsewhere on other tournaments and circuits so we see them elsewhere over the year. I would shout for them. Well done everyone to stream this.
Why the hell does Raducanu have to give an interview BEFORE a vital tie break. You could see she was clearly not interested. That simply broke her momentum and was the reason I believe she went down 5- 1 at first. Why didn't they interview Burrage??? Totally unfair but she came back in true style.
after watching this and the semi-final, seems the procedure was to interview the winner of each set, Burrage got interviewed after the first set after all....but yeah i agree it's a dumb idea to do mid-game interviews, I wouldn't wanna do that especially in a tiring tennis final just before the deciding tiebreak lol. it's like footballers doing an interview before a penalty shootout or something, total momentum killer haha
Having to grind out wins on some of these smaller stages must have been the building blocks and foundation for her confidence and belief which she unleashed in Flushing NY
33:45, clear ace and ended up winning the point anyways! Fighting spirit/fire in the belly! Next tough call at 38:41, questionable in/out but Raducanu called it in... I like her. Courteous player. I know guys that will call that shit out since it's close to the line and it's "my" call. She didn't carry any emotion over from the last call against her serve. Anyways, here after her 2nd win! YEAH!
Emma is such an exceptional athlete. How she turned it around from 2-6 by just pushing herself to play peRFect tennis. Congrats to her opponent too, this was an outstanding tennis match.
A lot can happen in a year, especially at that age! You can see the elements of her game here, but she's also got better, something she'll have to keep doing to stay at the top.
I think the key changes for Emma were here forehand and the racket. Her forehand grip here looks very different to the US open and the racket is also smaller (as Mark Petchey said she worked on getting a bigger racket)
@@waisonline She's unbeaten in Grand Slam tournaments...not a bad claim to fame. NB: Retiring due to health reasons is not being beaten, before some YT smart@ss chimes in
In the summer of 2020, when Wimbledon and much else was cancelled due to COVID I saw somewhere coverage of Tennis from Nottingham. May I ask where else are our establish Tennnis Centres? Is it possible to stream/televise our young players around the different circuits alongside seeing them at Eastbourne, Nottingham or elsewhere. I think I would pay a subscription to see more of our young players.
Google ITF and the WTA for the events calendar. Amazon Prime Video show many tournaments, there is also Eurosport and The Tennis Channel. Before you sign-up make sure they are showing the type of events that interest you. Generally, our younger players don't get much or any coverage. Just so you know the UK Pro League 2020 was the first, it was created to help our players stay in completion when they were unable to travel and compete due to Covid. This year final is in Shrewsbury 9th - 14th Nov ish.
If Jodie could sort her head out and stop losing it every other point she could be just as big as Emma, she doesn’t move nearly aswell but she hits cleanly and with much more power. I give Jodie maybe 3 more years to try and improve mentally and if she can then with Emma probably number 1 (or at least top 4) and Jodie maybe making top 30, British women’s tennis will be on 🔥
@Zanzibar979 It was a positive comment, meaning that you can tell that Emma and her team take their jobs seriously and are willing to put all the work in trying to make Emma a Champion.
Here's something, here's something, you'll never forget and then she looked at me with those big brown eyes and said "you just ain't seen nothing yet" !!
Nice one! She did have to keep her voice down and not say anything revealing during a match that was still in flight or her opponent may hear and be able to act positively react on something that is said.
I watched this after the u.s open and you can see all the aspects of her game but they seemed to have tightened up within 12myhs also bear in mind lockdown,I really believe her achievement is the greatest in sporting history, look how many people put her down with what happened in Wimbledon,John McEnroe has not said a word, Emma is not a grunting, shouting, she is poised, smiling assassin..
Proper athletes. Big hitting. Serious intent and not backing off. But Emma has that bit extra: an attacking player whose defensive skills will improve with age and experience. Both pretty girls, too. Emma has got at least a £100+M career ahead of her....
That bad looking call by Raducanu looks in at first but if you slow down the video it’s definitely out, weird artefact of the encoding and crappy frame rate…
1:36:05 hits home with Emma struggling now in 2022 after bursting on the scene, was always likely to happen, hopefully she gets back to her best soon, would be the best and funniest thing ever if she actually defends her US Open despite the year she's had lol "17 year old sensation Emma Raducanu" love how she's being called that months before that Wimbledon run even started lmao, it's cool to see that she's not just some anomaly who came out of nowhere or whatever and that she's actually been a serious talent for years but casual tennis fans like me just didn't know about it haha
😂 *It's funny to hear the commentator keep talking about how great Jodie is. Jodie this Jodie that, Jodie, Jodie, etc... Then Emma breaks her in the second set and now they are talking about how great Emma was getting there, etc... Emma this, Emma that, Ema, Ema, etc...* _Oh, how they change their tune quickly._
This is a great tournament, but why have this all British affair, and then have the prize money announced in US dollars? I know the exchange rate favours the pound, so $20k in pounds won’t sound as impressive, but surely the organisers could have ponied up the bit extra to make it £20k.
"She [Burrage] realises the gulf between where she is now and those at the very top of the game is perhaps not as wide as she thought" #aintthatthetruthruth
They should put Emma (this girl, shown here) and Serena (iconic legend) at Indian Wells at the same time. Let's see if a teen girl can beat a female legend at her own game.
Some 'sportsmanship' on that first tiebreak point in the first set. The serve was clearly out which Emma knew. Umpire didn't call it and then Burrage said she thought it was good. Hmmm.
If you play the point on X.25 speed from 56.37 until Emma has served, it sounds like there are alein voices tying to communicate with us. It looked out.
I had a feeling when I watched Tom Brady rock my team in 2001 and win the SB. And immensely enjoyed the last 20 years of Tom Brady winning SuperBowls and become the GOAT of NFL like a decade ago and reigning. I got that same feeling watching Emma Raducanu. Same Supermodel looks, unbelievable talent, calm composed demeanor and articulate and erudite and basically you can *feel* the aura around them. That aura is unmistakable and everyone sees it. In time I hope Emma is as revered as Brady is
I love how it’s so important that Emma is into Formula 1 racing 😂😂 @ 49:15. Also Jodie Burrage does have the game to win a slam for sure if this match is any indication of her level.
