In this video I go surfcasting to Pensarn beach on the north Wales coastline, UK. I was targeting dabs and whiting on a beautiful, crisp mid January day, using mainly lugworm (frozen black lug) as bait, though with the occasional cocktail of lugworm with either red cockle or razorfish whipped onto the hook. Air temperature was 1 degree celsius and I was fishing the last few hours of the ebb and the first few hours of the flood on a medium sized tide.
I was using continental style tackle on this occasion. Rod was a Veret Cosmico and the reel was the Shimano Aero Technium xsb. I was distance casting as the tide receded, aiming to intercept the fish as they retreated. Once the tide turned I switched to a two hook flapper rig, casting closer as the the fish would be moving inshore with the flooding tide.
In the end I had a few average sized dabs and a single sizeable whiting which made a change from the usual bait robbing pin whiting! The video contains some clips filmed in the previous summer where I found hundreds of tiny flatfish that got trapped in the gulleys as the tide recedes. I even managed to catch one of these tiny little flatfish, and it's good to see the juveniles that will one day grow to larger fish.
The video shows me filleting the whiting, which I then saved for later. I then show a simple egg wash and bread crumbing technique for the dabs, which I later fry and eat with toast and a beer - they were delicious and are one of my favourite sea fish to eat.
