UK Tropical Garden Basics 1: Intro and Plant Guide

Today I wanted to start a new series of videos looking at the basics of tropical or exotic gardening here in the UK. As a beginner the variety of these impressive and unfamiliar plants must be a bit overwhelming, so in this video I begin by explaining what tropical gardening means to me and how all the plants can grouped together by their winter care requirements. The next video will be about hardiness and I’ll give lists of plants that are both easy and maintenance free through to impressive plants that require a bit more care to keep them growing through winter. I hope it helps, if only to explain how I see the garden and simplify the range and care of the rapidly increasing range of plants available. If you’ve got any questions then please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.
If you've enjoyed my content and would like to say thanks for the price of a coffee then please head over to my Ko-fi, any kind donations would be appreciated and put towards creating more exciting content (or treats for Max if you wish!): ko-fi.com/geor...
Thanks,
George

Yes, get away with your ability to grow far more tropical plants with zero effort haha 😂 Thanks for stopping by! We can grow a large range of tropical style plants here, some requiring protection over winter, but it’s more about using the hardier tropicals to create an exotic look.

Nice one, thanks! Wow, that’s exciting! Have you got a proper design sorted or just a rough idea that you’re going to build on?
@davidbanner9001
@davidbanner9001 3 года назад
I'm starting with two 1.5m borders either side of the garden. I'm sure they will get bigger over time. Then basically planting from the back of the border with the taller palms/plants. Gradually sloping to the front of the borders with smaller flowers and ground cover. I'm sure it will evolve over time. But I think it's a good start.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 года назад
@@davidbanner9001 That sounds like a great plan and it’s a top idea to get the backing palms in first, they’ll soon grow! 1.5m is a decent width too, anything less than 1m doesn’t have the same impact.

This is a great video, lots of useful information...thanks George. I was double minded about planting tropicals in our sunny medium size front garden, but now encouraged as you suggest evergreens and hardy would be best for all weathers and low maintenance. Also the fact that you actually mentioned front garden. Could you please suggest some plants ☺️
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 года назад
That’s fantastic and a medium sized sunny garden will look amazing. I did a video a bit back on evergreens, that’s probably the best list to start with but Trachycarpus Fortunei & Wagnerianus, Cordylines, Phormiums etc would all look great.

@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 года назад
Location is everything, around London and on the South Coast, I’d say you stand a good chance. Anywhere else and they’re realistically going to struggle long term if and when we do get a cold winter unless they’re in a very sheltered spot. I’ve got one planted out in the best spot here but I know it won’t survive a very cold winter and it’ll get potentially get too big to protect one day and have to take it’s chances...
