In 2024, the United Kingdom implemented significant changes to its legal migration rules for family and work visas. Here are the key modifications:
Social Care Workers and Dependents: Newly arriving care workers are no longer allowed to bring their immediate family members (partners and children) on their visa.
Skilled Worker Visa Salary Thresholds:
The baseline minimum salary required for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa category has increased from £26,200 to £38,700.
Additionally, the specific “going rate” minimum salary for each job has also risen significantly.
The list of jobs eligible for sponsorship at a reduced minimum salary has been shortened and is now known as the Immigration Salary List.
Spouse/Partner Visa Income Requirement:
The minimum income necessary to sponsor someone for a spouse/partner visa has risen from £18,600 to £29,000.
Further increases are planned, with the income threshold expected to reach around £34,500 later in 2024 and approximately £38,700 by early 2025.
Graduate Visa Review:
The Graduate visa, a two-year unsponsored work permit for overseas graduates of British universities, is currently under review.
The Home Secretary has requested a report on this matter by May 14, 2024.
These changes were implemented through revisions to the Immigration Rules. While there is no requirement for parliamentary approval, the House of Commons or House of Lords can actively vote to annul these changes within 40 days of their introduction. Typically, such votes are rare, and the changes take effect automatically.
