I wasn’t aware of quite how different it was until I looked into it. Ours favours film makers while yours favours authors, which is not what I expected.
One difference you haven't mentioned is that the UK uses the concept of rule of shorter term for foreign works. Works created outside of the UK that have a shorter copyright term become public domain in the UK the same time they become public domain in their origin country including the United States.
So e.g. could an American author publish a book with UK public domain characters in the UK? Could then somebody in the US order said book online from an UK store?
An American author could publish a UK public domain character in the UK, however if it was then imported to the US it would in theory be subject to charges to go to the rights holders, whether this happens or not probably depends on how litigious the rights holders are.
