Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has announced the procurement of Buffalo Mine-Protected Vehicles (MPVs) from the United States to enhance its military capabilities against Russian forces. These vehicles are specifically designed to withstand the destructive impacts of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), providing essential protection for troops operating in hostile environments. Developed by Force Protection Inc. and later acquired by General Dynamics Land Systems, the Buffalo MPV is built on a robust Mack ASET AI-400 truck chassis, featuring a 6x6 drive system for superior mobility across challenging terrains.
The Buffalo MPV stands out for its powerful Caterpillar C13 diesel engine, which delivers 450 horsepower, allowing the vehicle to reach speeds of up to 105 kilometers per hour. Additionally, the vehicle’s advanced defensive features include thick armor capable of withstanding direct hits from 7.62 mm ammunition and RPGs, along with a V-shaped hull that deflects blast impacts from explosives. A unique feature is the 9.1-meter articulated arm, which can be remotely operated to safely handle and neutralize explosive threats, significantly enhancing the safety of the crew during explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) missions.
Since its introduction in 2003, the Buffalo MPV has proven its effectiveness in various conflict zones, including Afghanistan and Iraq, where it played a crucial role in safeguarding military personnel from IEDs. Ukraine’s acquisition of these battle-tested vehicles highlights its commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia. The addition of Buffalo MPVs is expected to provide a significant boost to Ukraine’s military operations, offering both protection and operational flexibility in the challenging battlefield conditions.
