I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. The fighting there in some areas was as intense or more so than in the most intense parts of Ukraine. However there were other areas where the effort was more of counter-insurgency operations and the fighting was less intense. But, I've been in many firefights and each one has been a life and death struggle for both sides. There is no such thing as an insignificant firefight. Bullets are flying in every direction, RPG's firing at us, grenades, and in one case a brief hand-to-hand fight to take a tree line. A major problem in Vietnam from my perspective is that the US had a policy of rotating men home after a year in Vietnam and new men took their place. Our enemy had been fighting there for years and were seasoned veterans who knew the terrain much better that we did. We had the advantage of air superiority and excellent artillery support on one hand, but on the other we mostly had WW II and Korean War equipment. My only means of navigation was an out of date French 1:50,000 map and a standard military compass which were pretty much useless in the mountains, jungles, and elephant grass where visibility was limited to 5-10 feet. Resupply most of the time was limited to helicopters and problems with terrain, weather, and enemy threats meant regular resupplies were at times unreliable. Therefore ammunition was more important than food. During the year I was there, we had almost no vehicle support of any kind because of the terrain. After a year, I was physically and mentally exhausted when I returned to the US. I served two more years in Latin America supporting counter-insurgency operations of the host nation during a major civil war. I respect the courage and bravery of the Ukraine soldiers.

The 10th Operational Corps is a combined arms corps of the Ukrainian Ground Forces that oversees nine brigades from elements of several service branches of the AFU. The 10th OC has an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 troops, along with 200 tanks, 700 infantry fighting vehicles and armored trucks.[1] The 10th OC is one of at least two corps in the Ukrainian army, the other being the 9th Strategic Reserve Corps.[2] Unlike its other formations, it is a joint forces unit.

@chr9s833
@chr9s833 Год назад
The issue is that the F16's won't have that much of an impact unless NATO becomes willing to attack Russian air defense that are inside the Russian border. The F16's may give an air-to-air combat advantage - but not until Ukraine has control of the airspace. That was the key in the Middle East. The Iraqi air defense was basically nullified allowing the allied air forces to handle the Iraqi air force (which mostly fled to Iran) and then concentrate on tactical & strategic air strikes. Russian air defenses inside the Russian border will be the issue. And remember, F16's are not new technology. They are now 40+ years old. My dad was a flight test engineer on the F16 project. The fly-by-wire system was cutting edge in the late 70's. Even with the modern upgrades, they still are a 1970's based design.

The fact that you don't have long distance superiority means that you need to close fast. Think about this like this were a boxing match: Mike Tyson vs Tyson Fury. (You may substitute Rocky for Mike and Dolph for Fury. Or any similar matchup.) Mike needs to close and hit Fury as fast and hard as possible. A long slugging match at Fury's range will just decimate Mike without a chance at hitting back equally, due to being too short. So: The Ukrainians would need to accept some casualties to the ready ammunition of the Russians, press through a prechosen area and pedal to the metal force a hole. The USA lost tens of thousands of men during Operation Overlord. They died on some beaches til the Ns had no ammo for their machine guns anymore and only then could start to fight back. Some beaches were better, but some parts had losses of the first units of almost 100 percent. But even when the amphibious tanks were lost at sea and stuff went badly, they pressed on cause they knew they had to. Until the point that the Ukrainians stop diddling their thumbs and really push, I am not seeing an offensive.

Ukraine didn't ignore Russia when they were building their extensive defensive network along the Zaporizhia front. They were limited as to how they could respond due to a lack of heavy weapons and their (ongoing) lack of air support. Which is why all MBTs, IVFs, APCs etc that only arrived this spring should have been sent a year ago. And why they need to be sent fighter and ground attack aircraft NOW.

Biden & the Biden administration had decided to provide sufficient quantities of F-16s and ATACMS to the AFU earlier in the year, the war would be as good as over by the end of 2023.🤔Evidently the U.S.A. wants to ensure that Russia does not win, but does not want to enable Ukraine to defeat Russia & liberate 100% of Ukraine's sovereign lands! 😡

I am quite sure that Mr. Shea chose the Battle for Normandy in 1944 for a comparison, due to it being familiar to most Brits, and also being a good general match for the topic. However, with all due respect to Mr. Shea, I'd like to make a few detailed points for those who may not be totally familiar with the events being compared. IMHO, there are two major differences between the present situation for the Ukrainians & that of the western allies in the aftermath of the D-Day landings (i.e. June to August 1944). They are as follows: (a) the Ukrainians do not have air superiority as the western allies did in 1944...not even local air superiority. Those who have learned their history will know that the air superiority of the western Allies was decisive in virtually every offensive operation conducted during the breakout from the Normandy beachhead, through to the annihilation of the Germany 7th Army in the Falaise Pocket. Even later on the western front, during the Battle of the Bulge, the ill-prepared western allies were able to hold on against a powerful Germany offensive, then counter-attack & restore all lost territory, in-part due to improved weather which enabled the use of the western allies' overwhelming tactical air superiority. (b) the Ukrainians do not have the weapons systems/munitions to strike deep behind enemy lines to sufficiently to significantly degrade/destroy Russian logistics, command & control, storage of ammo/fuel/food/equipment, air bases & naval bases, air defences, artillery/missile batteries, and concentrations of reserve units. In contrast, the western allies in 1944 had degraded the Luftwaffe enough that British, Canadian & U.S. bombers could carry out, at will, highly impactful bombing of German manufacturing, logistics, ammo/fuel dumps, and more. It should be noted that air superiority and significant degrading of enemy assets deep behind their lines are two pre-requisites which have always been part of NATO offensive doctrine. IMHO, if the U.S.A. had made a commitment to Ukraine winning the war (versus not losing the war), and had, in timely fashion, provided F-16s (for local air superiority) and ATACMS (to destroy Russian assets deep behind the lines, everywhere in Crimea..), then the comparison would be much more reasonable.

Tip toe through what's missing: in Normandy, late July, 1944 after more than a month's bloody combat and not much progress, less than 40 miles off the beaches, and more than 100,000 casualities, the Allies decided to use massively focused air power on narrow fronts of the German lines (which were not as deep or dense as the current Russian ones, being more designed around the hedgegrows and village strong points). Operation Cobra on the American front saw 3,000 heavy bombers drop their loads on less than 3 miles width of german lines; it worked, but it wasn't a cake walk, the Germans still mounted weaker resistance...but it got American armor through the gap and on the way to go both West and East in a hurry. I guess Ukrainian lives aren't worth the risks of such air power which might upset Mr. Putin, who still calls the shots in this war. Still, I hope the Ukrainian troops can pull off a miracle and somehow breach these 20 km deep Russian lines.
@donaldduck830
@donaldduck830 Год назад
Nope. The German troops in the area were relatively weak (recruits and casualties from the Eastern front on recuperative holidays). The Allies got through when their ready ammunition was used up and they got no resupply cause the focus of the OKW was still on Calais. Your fantastic bombing campaign killed a US General and a single German division (Panzer Lehr = Tank Teaching unit). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cobra Even with the limited resupply via the artificial harbors the US logistics situation was far superior than the German defenders situation. Therefore, after fierce fighting, the US troops prevailed.
@williamneil8862
@williamneil8862 Год назад
@@donaldduck830 Nope to you as well. My source is the book "Six Armies in Normandy" by John Keegan, 1982. If the German troops were as second rate as you suggest, why was there so little progress breaking out of the Normandy peninsula? And why go to the fantastic effort to mass so many bombers (with the mission duplicated by British air power in another comparable effort in a different sector of the front? And still they did not waltz through. I'll take Keegan over Wikipedia in these matters.

Rather than using tank support - which is vulnerable to all kinds of missiles or drones, the Ukrainians seem to be just using infantry advancing along the wind-breaks and clearing the Russian trenches and fox-holes hidden within them. These tree-lines are also good for concealing the Ukrainian soldiers from drone attack. The Russians have mined the open fields - expecting dozens of tanks coming over them - Battle of the Bulge style. It may be a slow process but with long range missile attack and excessive use of drones these tactics should be successful in the long run.
