Ukraine should have stayed neutral, it could have acted as a bridge between Russia, Europe, and should have longed for close relations with Turkey and some other eastern country's. Instead, it was stealing gas from Russia for decades, had a gigantic Russofobia especially in the west. They barked to loud when they where increasing trade with Europe, while the eastern part of Ukraine was still heavely dependent on Russian trade. Yep, not all of them have realized it though Some of the Eastern Europeans in the club (Kaja Kallas/Est and Alexander Stubb/Fin, for instance) still want to see absolutely ironclad pledges both of making Ukraine a member and continuing to arm them to the hilt - these people seem just about as starry-eyed as Elensky himself about the supposed silver bullet value of NATO's pledges. In reality, most of north-eastern Europe (except Poland) has little ability to defend themselves: they would be very dependent on support from western NATO countries in a sharp situation.

After a few decades, maybe after just one decade: Ukraine disappeared from the map (the once Ukrainian oblasti are Russian oblasti now, included the oblasti that became Russian recently). It is quite obvious, that Russia won the war, otherwise Ukraine would still exist. If a country doesn't exist (anymore), it can't join NATO!

The idea of these pledges and supposedly far-reaching contracts is also to beef up a PR narrative, to create an impression of steely resolve, that everybody is standing united behind Kiev and there will be no backing off. Zelenski cannot be naive with his demands to be NATO member when Ukraine is in the middle of war with Russia, when a partial of its territory is occupied by Russia.
