This from a Russian citizen. He saw a Ukrainian soldier and went up to ask him what was happening. The Ukrainian soldier checked his papers and repied "learn Ukrainian and prepare for a referendum. Hahaha GOLD
In WW II, the US launched the Doolittle raid of Tokyo. Significant? Destruction was minimal, but it changed Japan's military strategy to attack Midway, which was very significant.
The Doolittle Raid of Tokyo is a great comparison. Another one that occurred to me is the Viet Cong's 1968 Tet Offensive, which demoralized the US so thoroughly that it set in motion the elements that caused Congress to refuse to provide funds for the war seven years later.
Is it really 650 episodes of Ukraine the Latest! I guess that's what happens after two and a half years. I think I listened to just about every single one. Even bought a subscription to the Telegraph because of them. Its important that Ukraine isn't forgotten and placing this war in its geopolitical context is crucial. First rate journalism from the team.
One way the ”war” would be a fair game: Both sides must restrict supplies to those made in PRC. That would be a way to turn PRC into a neutral country.
It’s insane that despite the Ukraine war having exponentially more potential geopolitical + real world implications for the US than Israel/Gaza, the latter gets 50x more coverage despite being a cyclical conflict with far less potential to impact the US significantly let alone the everyday lives of Americans.
100%. Disappointed Dom hasn’t realized this. Sure, there are a few cases where they’re trying to get info, but as we’ve seen from what they’ve done to so many civilians who wouldn’t know anything, it’s for pleasure.
It's not even about getting information.. front line troops have very little in the way of intel beyond their immediate positions and such.. With the number of drones about, it's unlikely that they would be able to tell them anything they didn't already know even if they wanted to.
Actually it's not JUST to inflict pain. There seems to be a culture in the Russian judicial system where they want to make prisoners plead guilty of offenses in front of the judge in court. Hence, torture until the prisoner appears broken, THEN a quick court appearance where the prisoner pleads guilty. This aspect came to light in one of the prisoner stories talked about in this podcast sometime last year. I have no idea WHY the Russian penal system works this way (and it might only occur like this SOME of the time or in some places). Of course, it's also clear that the Russians are not trying to use torture to gain information, they definitely have other goals in mind. This is also clear from Bucha, Irpin, and Kherson - civilians were routinely tortured for no perceivable (to us) military reason; but that may have been part of a larger political goal to break the morale of Ukraine's civilian population. Who really knows how people with such twisted minds really think though.
There are no Russian defences between them and Kursk. The Ukrainians are using jammers ahead of swarms of FPV Drones and thunder drive the light armoured troop carriers into the Russian lines while they are being swarmed and at the same time the heavy artillary and slower moving battle groups move up and consolidate their gains. Kersk is in their sights. Slava Ukraini
Yeah, it was quite telling that journalists and experts in the Baltics were NOT saying "What the heck is Ukraine doing? It´s absurd." Always trust the Baltics and Ukraine to know Russia the best.
@@martavdz4972 Right. Since the beginning, Ukraine, the Baltics and Poland have spoken the truth into seemingly deaf ears or to people with diverging priorities.
Just imagine if they had the air and long range support to attack into Russia with more than Ukrainian weapons. Just imagine how far they would have gotten with shaping operations from long range missiles and air strikes. They need to be able to attack into Russia with western weapons.
That’s why they were finally forced to do this. They wouldn’t have even had to do this had they been given both the green light and sufficient quantities to go after bases, aircraft, etc. in Russia.
And had Ukraine had weaponry & permissions to strike marshalling areas inside Russia at the start of 2024 things would have looked somewhat different on several fronts
The West must abandon its mindless deference to so-called "plausible denial" on the part of countries such as Kyrgyzstan. For starters, Kyrgyzstan's denial is NOT plausible. It's implausible denial, wildly implausible. In any event, plausible denial is not the correct standard of proof. In the US and many other countries, the standard used in civil lawsuits is preponderance of the evidence, which means more likely than not. Under that standard, Kyrgyzstan escapes liability only if we believe that it is more likely than not that Kyrgystan is telling the truth when it denies the allegation that it has been supplying the Russians with certain electronics. Rogue nations are very much aided by the West's mindless assumption that plausible denial is the appropriate standard. That assumption is all the more mindless when the West pretends an implausible denial is plausible, for example, when Russia denied its control over the Wagner Group. That denial was always implausible and has become extremely implausible by now. Yet, next time that Russia denies its control of Wagner, some dummies in the West will still toss their hands up and say "we can't do anything because they have plausible denial." NO, they don't. Anyway, plausible denial is not the right standard.
Here come all the bots to cope: 🇺🇦 is losing! mighty 🇷🇺 can’t be stopped! blah blah blah! And my fave: “This isn’t good for peace!” 2 weeks after 🇷🇺 wiped out the biggest children’s hospital. 🤦♂️
I remember the Colonel Reisner, the Austrian military commentator, talking about the "transparent battlefield," At the time, I pointed out that even in the static, heavily observed fronts of the first war, surprises still occurred. The 1916 Brusilov Offensive, the 3rd Battle of Ypres, Cambrais, and the 1918 German spring offensive, were all surprises because of either, tactics, misdirection, undermining, new technology, or just good planning and discipline. All these factors have been evidenced in this war's surprise successes. The only factor we have not yet seen is weather. This was a decisive element in the initial success of the German 1944 Ardenne offensive. Despite Allied mastery of the air and knowledge of German codes,, a combination of radio silence and thick fog, allowed the complete element of surprise.
Let us hope that what happened when the weather cleared and the allied air force decimated the German panzers does not happen here. Hitler's stupidity did shorten the European war by months as the Germans on the Eastern Front had no strategic reserves.
Perhaps because they´ve been banned for two years now... I worked at the world hockey championships this year and none of the organizers there missed the Russian players. They said they´re the most demanding and complaining ones.
Francis: controlling the key Russian territories of Moscow and St. Petersburg isn’t always necessarily decisive for the survival of a Russian regime. Remember that it certainly wasn’t the case during the winter of 1812 - 13. Napoleon had invaded Russia and taken Moscow, only to then be chased out of the country by the Czar and his armies, and marking the beginning of the end for Napoleon.
Don't assume Russia tortures POWs only to extract information. It's also to break captured soldier's will, so once they are exchanged, they will be less willing to return to the front.
If this doesn’t illustrate to NATO that Russia is not some indomitable juggernaut, I don’t know what will. This could have been the very ages ago if our leaders had shown more courage and initiative early on. To say Russia wouldn’t stand a chance against NATO itself is an understatement at this point.
Another point, I think, is also to show the world that they should finally stop being cowards about nuclear war. They're saying: SEE?! We're taking Russian territory, and STILL they do NOTHING. Stop being so afraid of so-called "escalation"!!!
Roland Nolipharth needs to come in early and warn these folks about the emptiness of this Kursk incursion and occupation. This was the same clique that got ahead of itself with Western failed counter offensive of 2023. These same group got ahead of itself with the Krnky crossing despite being warned that it would go nowhere. The emotional overload is unbelievable
Like they did in Dnipro. And like they did when they landed hard in Kiev. But that force is depleted, and the new elite are can only be half as trained.
Ukraine has begun its SMO inside of Russia. May it be more successful than Russia's SMO inside of Ukraine. It will help with negotiations if Ukraine holds Russian territory.
i definitely think western security forces knew in advance, i don't think the timing of the prisoner exchange, coming just before this, is a coincidence
Meanwhile: "Ukrainian forces in Kursk Region have lost at least 945 service members dead or wounded, as well as 102 pieces of heavy equipment, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday. Among the heavy equipment, Kiev lost 12 tanks, 17 armored personnel carriers, six armored infantry fighting vehicles, two anti-aircraft units, and three field artillery guns, it added." The same script written in Washington for the lapdogs...
The invasion of Ruzzia is a welcome development. Can we assume the Whitehouse approved this as it seems to be contrary to their nervous policy on these matters?
Why in the world would this American woman plead guilty - I thought she went to Russia for family reason?. I hope they cut down on these smuggling goods into Russia, money makes the world go around, just ask Musk or Trump.. Some days the news from UKL leaves us ordinary people in total despair for Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that allows foreign banks to open branches in Russia but also provides for a number of restrictions on their activities. The document was published on the official portal of legal information. The goal is to create conditions for the development of a system of international settlements and attracting foreign investment, the explanatory note says. The work of branches of foreign banks will be aimed precisely at this. That is why they will not be able, like ordinary banks, to open deposits for individuals and companies, accounts in precious metals, engage in trust management of money and other property. Foreign banks will have the right to work in the securities market through a branch created in Russia. Each bank will be allowed to establish only one branch. The law also provides for setting requirements for the qualifications and business reputation of the banks’ officials.
My belief is that Russia, due to its horrific crimes in its invasion of a peaceful neighbour, will remain sanctioned by the West until Putin dies or is presented to the ICC to defend accusations of committing War Crimes.
If Ukraine can't fire US weapons into Russia can they fire US weapons within Russia? Maybe if Ukraine annexes part of Russia then it's their territory and they can fire weapons in it (and maybe lay mines??)?
Can Ukraine hold any Russian territory long term? Giving up territory in Donbas currently why waste resources for an impossible offensive, when hardened defense is needed immediately? Doesn't make sense
That's what I'm wandering too. But maybe they can hold this land? Or can pull Russian resources? It'd be amazing if they could take the nuclear plant though..
Yeah, the Russians don't have an unlimited number of tanks and armoured vehicles. The Russians will use meatwaves. The Russians are begging Iran, North Korea, and China for weapons and vehicles. The Ukrainians can just expand their border by occupying Russia's territory.
They can always retreat if Russia start significant counter offensive in the region. Counter offensive would mean the attack was successful in reliving other part of the line. Of Russia doesn't do counter offensive then Ukraine will have time to fortify new position, giving them bigger buffer in this region.
The Russian military continues to repel the Ukrainian attack on the region of Kursk, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence. “Over the past 24 hours, units of the Sever Group of Forces and arrived reserves, Army Aviation and artillery fire foiled enemy attempts to launch raid operations tot the depth of the Russian territory in Kursk direction,” the ministry said in a briefing on August 9. It added that the Russian military carried out a series of strikes against manpower and equipment of Kiev forces close to the settlements of Daryino, Gogolevka, Melovoy and Nikolsky as well as on the western outskirts of the settlement of Sudzha. Five American-made Stryker armoured personnel carriers (APC) were hit close to the settlement of Yuzhnoye and a Ukrainian military convoy made up of one tank, four APCs and one Kozak armoured fighting vehicle, was struck close to the settlement of Martynovka, according to the ministry, which noted that air and missile strikes also hit Ukrainian reserves in the Sumy region. Over the past 24 hours, Kiev forces lost over 280 troops and 27 armoured vehicles, including four tanks, five APCs, 18 armoured fighting vehicles, six motor vehicles, one American-made M777 towed howitzer, one Polish-made Krab self-propelled howitzer and one D-20 gun, the ministry said. “Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the enemy has lost up to 945 troops and 102 armoured vehicles, including 12 tanks, 17 armoured personnel carriers, six infantry fighting vehicles, 67 armoured fighting vehicles, 12 motor vehicles, two Buk M1 self-propelled artillery systems, and three field artillery guns,” it added. The ministry also released videos from Kursk showing an artillery attack on an ammunition depot of Kiev forces, a Ukrainian armed drone being shot down and a series of Lancet loitering munition strikes against military vehicles in the region. Kiev forces launched their attack in Kursk early on August 6. The heavy use of weapons made by the United States and other Western allies of the Kiev regime indicates that the attack was orchestrated with help from NATO. In the first stage of the surprise attack, Kiev forces managed to occupy several settlements in Kursk. However, they are now paying a heavy price just to keep the attack going.

Unprecedented needs to be stricten from the vocabulary. Everyone bombs and invades, basically acting crazy snd the country always says...Unprecedented ... drives me crazy
I'm sure the Venerable Saint Michael of Lynch will be incadescent with rage that Sir Keir doesn't regard the first duty of his government to be making millionaires of his beloved railway workers ....

The Germans ran out of fuel at the battle of the bulge due to being blocked by the two or three access roads through the Ardennes forest. Tanks use fuel while idleing. And eventually they bodged down. I would suggest if they are being hammered by air threat, it just goes to show how much they need permission to use f16 for air cover in Russia. Combined arms.
