As an American veteran, my only concern with sending ammunition to Ukraine is how much do we send at a time. We don't want to send so much at a time that Russia could target it the same way Ukraine just targeted Russia's stockpiles. That being said, I haven't seen any reports of large Ukrainian stockpiles being hit so I have to assume they don't have many, because they're using the ammunition pretty quickly as it comes in. As for the pentagon running low on ammo, it's possible that calculation is based on how much ammo they think they'll need in the event of a war with China. Not to mention, America has bases all over the world that need to be supplied.

War with China? Rubbish...US is shitting its pants from China and China has absolutely no interest in going to war with US. Why would they fight with a nation that gobbles up every Made in China shit and from where China makes billions that they then use to buy US companies, real estate, influence politics etc. Think about it Mr. Veteran...even if there is a shooting war between US and China, unless China invades US territory (why would they??) or vice versa (no way!!) it will be missiles, not artillery.

The loss is not temporary. Building those storages takes much more time than building an airport. Russia lost ammunition storage facilities that cannot be restored, even when new ammunition is produced. Their ammunition since now on is going to be more concentrated, or in riskier structures. I think the logic is that because production facilities are still operating a flow of ammunition will be reconnected either directly from the factory or through alternative storage depots.
@MayaPosch
@MayaPosch 5 часов назад
Indeed, it's not like these bunkers will automatically respawn. Either the new ammo will have to be sent to the frontlines from far further back (complicating logistics), or the ammo will have to be stored in very small amounts in open/less protected depots (complicating logistics), or in big stockpiles near the front (big boom~). Either way Ukraine wins and the orcs lose.

Georgi, The United States has thousands of tons of current ammunition and weapons in storage. We have weapons the world has not even seen. The USA keeps the really cool stuff locked away and only shows it to members of Congress who are on appropriations committees for military budgets. The stockpiles you are reading about are only the ones in the outdated or soon to be outdated stuff. The USA is not running out of weapons or ammunition. My brother was a career officer in the army and he would never tell us any specific details but he consistently told us that the public is not aware to the latest stuff that they will use if and when it is needed. Whatever we see in public is always two or three generations older than what the USA has hidden away in bunkers and hangers.

The official capacity of the Toropets depot was 30,000 tons. However, Russia had been backloading huge amounts of ammunition there from closer to Ukraine for fear of ATACMS being released. Satellite imagery shows literally many thousands of tons of munitions sitting out in the open, suggesting the bunkers & storage buildings were already full to bursting (pun quite possibly intended...). Note that 30,000 tons is nowhere near a year's production of ammunition by Russia, which is more than 350,000 tons of artillery shells & charges alone. Thing is, Russia's probably lost 20% of its stocks in just over a week.
@oxydator
@oxydator 5 часов назад
Considering the corruption in all parts of the russian state and government driven industries, I would take that number of 350,000 tons with a grain of salt - I think it could be exaggerated a bit, with some percentage of the money put into production being siphoned off and turned into luxury goods etcetera.

So keep that in mind when discussing the comparative explosive power between the nuclear weapons used on Japan in 1945….. So, neither data is conclusively accurate. The amount of damage and scale of the explosions is truly apocalyptic…. Love that the Russians own stockpiles are causing so much damage to their own efforts and too big of an explosion to hide from their people. The lies that they shot down all the drones and it’s just debris falling that caused the explosions is funny…. So, they were successful at destroying your supposed hardened targets….. We reduced that to 1 1/2 wars after the fall of the USSR. That is hold off one enemy while we defeat the other. We are short of ammo. We started out short on ammo because the Ukraine war has given us more realistic numbers for how much we’d actually need and we underestimated. By a lot. Now we have to catch up to get to those more realistic quantities just for ourselves. We have ramped up production and hopefully that will soon cover both, but not yet. I can tell you from my experience that we never have been realistic about how much artillery we really need and how many rounds we’d fire in a real war. Korea was the last real conventional war we’ve fought. Much of the ammo we had that we could easily give away was the stuff that would expire and we’d have to dispose of anyway. That’s probably gone by now.

@MrDubyadee1
@MrDubyadee1 4 часа назад
@@johnjingleheimersmith9259 Of course it is. Duh! However, the Army does it in batches using contractors. The rounds themselves were delivered in batches, not one at time and the entire batch shares a date. If they had a few 10’s of thousands of rounds due to expire in 2 years (as an example), they could ship it to Ukraine immediately. That represent 2 years of production minus. Once they do then all they have to give are the rounds that are just now getting within the 2 year window which would only be a few thousand based on what our production has been. That’s less than 1 month’s consumption by the AFU. So we send them a box of ammo every month? That won’t cut it. We have to boost our production to cover our needs and a significant portion of what Ukraine needs now. The production capacity increase should be kept even after this war ends.

Fantastic!! Ukraine's own long range drone/cruise missle development is great to see. It sounds like Ukraine can reach out further with those than even the long range ATACMS. I understand that Russia has moved a lot of their air assets beyond ATACMS's longest range capabilities. They can't hide from you now. Can these new cruise missiles be scaled up? Are they easy to assemble? Maybe Ukraine can get a lot of its citizens building these to quickly increase the stockpile. What has happened to Ukraine's ballistic missle program? Thank you for asking us Americans for our opinion regarding weapons shipments to Ukraine. I don't think the U.S. is copping out on sending these weapons. You need to remember that the U.S. has to be prepared to defend itself, or Taiwan, if China makes a move there. If there is anything we've learned from the war in Ukraine is the continued importance of artillery on the battlefield, and the daily munitions requirements. I think this has been something of a shock to NATO. Ramping up production takes time. Existing stockpiles must be preserved. I will look into your concern about these shipments. I've been trying to find out where the $60B earmarked for Ukraine went. I will dig deeper. As I've noted before, ensuring that Kamala Harris is elected president is of the upmost importance. Any distractions brought by giving Ukraine permission to use long range ATAMCS may endanger her campaign. I can pretty much guarantee support for Ukraine will improve after she is elected. Slava Ukraini!!

Those explosions were not triggered by a plastic drone from Ukraine, and it is ridiculous to continue this claim. The weapons that hit those depots came from another source. Welcome to WWIII, the opening credits.

I would suggest that any military leaks to the press are strategic. I would also suggest that there is an elephant in the room regarding where the jet missiles were launched from! and where they can reach. The implied threat to Russia may cause them to withdraw.

Russian soldiers fight with their Kalashnikovs, shovels and even their bare hands and bodies and they go to the front-line by motorcycles and Chinese golf-carts. Therefore, they don't really need neither Artillery, nor Mortars, MBT's and not even grenades.

It will be a domino effect because of those depots going down. Since those were the biggest ones closest to the front line, ammo will have to be stored further away. Complicating logistics. These cruise missiles can more than likely be packed with way more explosives if they dont need to travel as far, putting the Crimean bridge in as big of danger as it has ever been.

Even if Russia can replace the ammunition this creates a gap in the supply chain and it will be weeks before it catches up. There will be shortages at the front in the near future for at least awhile.

Thanks for the content. The shortages of ammunition especially in US stockpiles has been a known issue for quite some time now. I'm not surprised at all to hear that there are growing concerns about how much we can provide to Ukraine. Ammunition production generally, and artillery specifically, has been lagging for at least a decade.

Georgi, I love your honest reporting and the passion you show for the critical cause of the Ukrainian war effort. I wish all Ukrainians the best for safety and success. As for the US stockpiles, I do believe, from all the reporting I have seen recently within the US, that the US Military is worried about the amount of munitions on hand, and the rate at which it is shrinking (a very rapid pace indeed). However, it's not only because of the Ukrainian conflict with that evil bastard Putin, it is also taking into account the situation in Israel, Gaza, the Red Sea and, the threat of all threats, China and the very unique threats in the South China Sea. So, I understand that it seems like the US should have limitless resources but even the US has a limit to what can be produced while also funding research and testing of future weapon system for the benefit of the entire free world. It's a big job. LOVE Ukraine!!!

Re: US Stockpiles- PA resident here. as I understand it, the administration has slowed the pace of supplies to Ukraine ahead of the election uut of concern that if Trump did win, there may not be any more aid passed in Congress for Ukraine for years. So they're trying to stretch what's left of the current package; It may have to last well into any (God forbid🤞) 2nd Trump administration. Glory to Ukraine. 🇺🇦

Georgie (sp?), my thoughts on your question about US munitions stockpiles: Between the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, supplying Ukraine as well as Israel and Taiwan, there has been an enormous amount of munitions drawn down. Additionally, the policy shift took the military to counter insurgency warfare from massed armed conflict after the fall of the USSR re-allocated resources away from standard munitions to more specialized weapons. While US arms productions are massive, they are rarely efficient, specifically closing production facilities that take months or years to reopen once the equipment and personal are let go as happened after the fall of the Soviet Union. And of course the US maintains a certain level of strategic ambiguity in terms of the amount of weapons it publicly and secretly provides to other nations as well as the amount of reserves. I am sure the military industrial complex is also doing everything in its significant power to create the appearance of a munitions deficit to justify spending even more money on the military.

I am an American. About a year ago, I heard General Hodges (I believe) talk about the subject of low stockpiles. His perspective was that the US military has a floor for munitions that they feel comfortable with. That comfort level relates to the ability to fight wars in two theaters of operation simultaneously. When the military gets too close to that minimum level, they start thinking of it as a shortage. If they are not viewing ammunition for Ukraine to fight Russia as being one of those theaters (the other being China) then the US argument is indeed bullshit.

@UkraineMatters When it comes to US stockpiles a certain level must be maintained for future issues. Just like anything else it takes time to replace weapons when used and the current geopolitical landscape means the US needs to plan for Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Russia. The volume of munitions alone that the US can go through in a single day would boggle the mind, let alone fuel, replacement parts, etc... This is one of the reasons we kept complaining to other NATO members since the stockpiles they kept fell woefully short of where they should have been. Other NATO members are getting better but again it takes time to build the equipment train the troops, and have the logistics you need in place.

Stockpiles of what? Even if the U.S. is running low on some items, we’re not running low on everything. We’ve got plenty of M2s and M-113s that can be sent over, for example.
