If a year ago, you could find people in different parts of the world who have never heard about Ukraine, this is almost impossible to imagine in 2022. The brave resistance of the Ukrainians to the Russian invasion caused a wave of true admiration around the world, making people from all countries and continents learn about Ukraine, its culture and history. Apart from Ukrainians who are working hard to expose Russian war crimes and atrocities, international journalists who report from Ukraine also play a crucial role in helping the world see the truth about the unjustified and brutal Russian war. To highlight their work and understand how they approach their important role, Ukraīner started a series of interviews titled “Ukraine Through The Eyes of Reporters”.
Our first episode features Terrell Jermaine Starr, an American journalist, hosting founder of the Black Diplomat podcast, which focuses on foreign policy issues, especially Ukraine. He’s been living in Ukraine for the past 12 years, learning about Russian colonialism and imperialism, while also reflecting on his own background and experience with oppression. In this interview, he talks about his life in Ukraine, his perspective on how Russians see Ukraine, and shares some recommendations for journalists who come to Ukraine to cover the war.

As a citizen of a baltic country I have nothing to add to this interview. That's exactly how a lot of us feel about russia, imperialists, and brutal colonisers that will rob you of all your identity. That's why we joined NATO, we don't care to go fight wars in the Middle East, but we know that by ourselves we wouldn't have a chance against russia. And as mentioned before, if you listen to russian politicians, talk about formal soviet states with so much resentment and distain. I'm extremely grateful to see a black American journalist saying this as us Eastern Europeans were not listened much before the war.

Great interview! Thank you. That's so true. No one would even care about NATO if not for Russian invasion. And this feeling of being lesser is so deeply integrated that many people were not even recognizing or noticing it for many years. And when you start to connect with your Ukrainian identity and asking some simple question like why there is no magazine in Ukrainian in my shopping mall, why it's Russian artists and authors who are always in the top list for Ukraine, why Russians think we MUST prefer Russian over Ukrainian, why we MUST want to be just like them it becomes a real eye-opener. After 2014 I was tired of it, so I simply decided to shut down all things Russian. And I discovered many different and wonderful things in and out of Ukraine that I didn't have a chance to see while being wrapped in this Russian-supremacy world. I think that's why many Ukrainians decide to switch to full Ukrainian in their everyday life, because they feel that they were tricked into the cultural and linguistic identity they had before. An identity of the lesser Russians that was crafted to keep Ukrainians in place, that doesn't allow a true independency.

Thank you so much for this! What a great interview and what a fascinating and brave journalist Terrell is! It's great to see Black Americans seeing the parallels between our histories above and beyond skin colour.

What an amazing interview, not only it did speak from my heart about Ukraine and its situation, but it also managed to tackle on the lens in which people engage on the internet and why they don't understand us central/eastern Europeans.

Fascinating story of discovering - and covering - of Ukraine! Some really good insights on the Americans' perspective and how it should be changed (for many, not all) to see Ukraine and the russian war fairly and based on the local context. Thanks! This was indeed interesting and useful. Will share it, definitely.

Being Ukrainian, I had plenty of friends who were living in my small city. Got to know people from Nigeria, Egipt, Georgia. All foreigners are welcomed in Ukraine but not russians for at least 50 years, after retributions and rebuilt all destroyed houses, lives of refugees and this list will go on...

Great interview! Looking at Ukraine as a central subject, and not an object is that lens that make it all clear. Appreciate for pushing this thesis!
