Ukrainian’s Hutsul ethnic minority is keeping a century-old weaving tradition alive by using the same tools and techniques that their people have for generations. In war and in peace, they’re determined to keep their craft alive, and they sell their blankets on Etsy (www.etsy.com/ie/shop/WovenWoolArt). We visited their village in Western Ukraine to see how their tradition is still standing.

As a Navajo woman i recognize the method bc our elders taught us to weave too. We use wool from sheep, use metal paddle combs, a wooden spindle that looks like a sword 😀 and it's rolled on the thigh rather than just twisted by hand. We use similar cleaning for wool n use plants n such to dye. Just found it neat, ur not the only ppl who do this generational. Beautiful work! 😍

As a spinner and weaver myself (in new zealand) it it very interesting to see how they seem to be using barely spun roving, along with single ply, to weave. I assume this does not totally strip all the good lanolin, and my guess is that such blankets and fabric at least partially felt over time, making it stronger and stronger as the years go on... which is kind of even more beautiful than just making a blanket that is it's best when just finished, because these blankets likely get better the more they are handled and used.
@n.ayisha
@n.ayisha 2 года назад
i love that she was spinning right from the handcards. i need to give that a go one of these days. as for the felting, i got nervous when they said that she washes the fiber with hot water, and rinses with cold. that is a recipe for disaster with fine wools (like Merino), but i guess that breed is less prone to felting from shock. this video and your comment are giving me the urge to play with some wool. i bought an old 4-shaft table loom last year, and i am desperate to start using it (i'm a weaving newb), but it needs a bit of refurbishing. i may card up some fiber and do a bit of spinning instead. you know how it goes when anyone starts talking about sheep!
@sophroniel
@sophroniel 2 года назад
@@n.ayisha thanks, i am self taught, love fibre arts. Look up right choice shearing; satisfying sheep shearing videos. Red the merino v hot water, look up videos related to staple length of fibres and how it affects roving; the type of sheep they have are hardier and closer to goat hair/wild sheep, and the fibre is completely different than merino, which has very fine, low crimp staple. I think nicole rudolph on youtube does fantastic videos on fabrics, and her one on wool is incredibly informative. Roxanne richardson also has done a few good videos on the subject as well.

@@sophroniel we seem to have similar taste. Roxanne is one of my faves in the fiber communities. her technique videos are top notch. for breed specific content, i like ExpertlyDyed. she has a lot of informative videos about using different fibers, so it's not just more of the same stuff you see on most vlogs. i also really like Ewethful Fiber Farm and Mill. she has a small group of assorted animals, and she buys and spins fiber from local farms, so you get to see a little bit of all of everything in her videos. happy crafting!

It was fun to see the ladies wind the wool onto distaffs from the carded wool, to prepare it for spinning. It was fun to know exactly what they were doing! It was also nice to see the sheep, which are also part of the heritage of the blanket-making craft. The brush-like tool the man was using to “comb” the wool is actually wool cards, for carding wool. The last step, where the blankets are washed in the stream, is called fulling. It makes the threads of the blanket mesh and stick together, to make a cohesive fabric. Slava Ukrainie! 🇺🇦

My husband and I raised fiber animals in Northern Michigan for years. (Sheep, angora goats and rabbits, llamas) My father made hand-cards and spindles of various types. (Supported spindles, drop spindles, top and bottom whorl) and I had wheels and looms for spinning and did felt and full some of my work. It was WONDERFUL to see traditional techniques from across the world and yet have it look so familiar. Thank you for sharing and God bless.

Julia Hersko..was my grandmother's Maiden name. I have been told all my life of my hungarian decent. I have been trying desperately to find the region my family is from. Mostly women. And we all sew. It is so strange to feel such pull, and such determination, toward uncovering the lineage of my family. I was born and raised in America. Why should these things intrege me so? I am left only with one answer. I must know. If you could please help me discover this, even in its smallest amount, I would be so greatful. And if you cannot, then I still learned something! The work your family does is absolutely beautiful, and deserves to be noted as such. Rare is a family like yours, and I am filled with joy having stumbled across this video. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessed be.

I'm not a Hutsul weaver, but I am teaching my daughter weaving and how to card wool now. She's 7 and has a small table loom to practice on, and a few spindles to spin on if she wants to learn. My family has a history in textiles, I'm glad it's staying in our family today ☺️ I hope the Hutsul traditions live on for centuries to come.

I started crocheting and looming when I was a kid in middle school, and I still do it now, 11 years later, I hope to do it my whole life, and I love talking to other fiber arts crafters, because I've never met a mean person who loves working on fiber arts projects, we're just a certain type of person who loves to work with our hands to make things that will last and with toys, make children smile, or with baby cloths, make the parents smile :)

For all the work that goes into this and the fact that these exact blankets are only made in a small region by specific people. They could ask much more for the price. In fact I would be willing to pay much more. This is something I would pay several thousands for a large piece to pass down to my daughter or son someday for their wedding. What a beautiful thing. I hope that they are well and not caught in this hideous war. Slava to this beautiful culture and people of this country. ❤.
