(28 Feb 2022) Ukrainian reservists were preparing to defend their country from the Russian military on Sunday.
Members of the Territorial Defence Force based in Fastiv, near the country's capital, were being taught first aid, weapons training and basic defence skills before leaving their base to patrol the local area.
Many were adopting Nom de Guerres, war names, as they left behind their old roles and became defenders of their country.
Kyiv was eerily quiet after huge explosions lit up the morning sky and authorities reported blasts at one of its airports on Sunday.
A main boulevard was practically deserted as a strict 39-hour curfew kept people off the streets.
Authorities warned that anyone venturing out without a pass would be considered a Russian saboteur.
Anyone willing to defend the city of Kyiv has been encouraged to come forward by authorities and prisoners with military experience who want to fight are being released.
Pentagon officials said that Russian troops are being slowed by Ukrainian resistance, fuel shortages and other logistical problems, and that Ukraine's air defence systems, while weakened, are still operating.
