Well, Poroshenko and Zelensky have continually been asking for assistance with weapons and handouts from Europe and the US before the came to power. Russia is concerned that Ukraine will become a defacto military base for attacks on Russia. The endgame is to take over Russian oil and gas. Just like what happened in Iraq. A large amount of Russian soldiers don't want to fight. I've seen videos of them surrendering and saying they don't want war. Many Russians have family/friends in Ukraine and know they could be shooting at their loved ones. The Russian army is built on fear, fear that they will be severely punished if they disobey their leaders. Any Russian that surrenders or disobeys their leaders are just as much hero's as those fighting for Ukraine. The real and only enemy is Putin and his puppets. They don't want what is best for the people, they want power and to exploit the people that support them. There is no reason Russians should be scared of the west, only the corrupt leaders are scared of losing their power and money.

They also do have some priddy valid reasons for the invasion that a lot of people aren’t even aware of (not to say it justifies starting a war for) but the people in Crimea have been suffering due to the closure of a canal that Crimea depended on being shut by Ukraine, they basically have zero water over there and people are really struggling. One of the main objectives here is to reopen that canal to save the 2 million ish people in Crimea, that is by no means the main reason but I think you could understand that this would affect the Russian public’s opinion of the attack. As such there is no way in hell the people collectively would wanna kill Putin.

@@solelgammal That would have been a criminal war act - to fire upon an unarmed civilian, who posed no physical threat. A soldier gets no bonus points for sticking to the parameters of his job, and being human (not a monster).

I think he was indifferent and just folowed his orders on how to behave towards the civilians.
