I had an issue with my Ulanzi ballhead, but after help from another RU-vidr, Ulanzi subsequently resolved the problem with great customer service. I am grateful to you for offering to help… you are a good person and your content is great !
that’s terrible to hear!! I have t heard any others having issues with the zero y - keep trying to contact them - you can send me an email and I’ll see if I can forward it to someone
The Ulanzi F38 has the big issue in my eyes not to have the option to take vertical panorama shots, which are not a problem with the Zero Y with Arca Swiss. So I choosed the Zero Y.
Thank you for the video. Not new to Arca Swiss tripods but new to Ulanzi. Was wondering what the difference was in the Zero Y and Zero F38 and thanks to you I now know. Need to compare its size/weight to my Gitzo traveler which I’ve had for a few years to see if it’s smaller/lighter. Started to try out the Ulanzi F38 capture clips for my bag strap so figured I should look as these as well. Also enjoy your videos. Take care.
Honestly I have been blown away with the tripod I’ve had mine about four weeks and I cannot fault it and I am a pretty hard-core landscape photographer who takes it everywhere. Yep into the ocean as well. I don’t care if I get scratches on it I don’t care if I get banged up a bit it’s a tripod. And so far it has just perform so well it’s so easy to adjust and so easy to set up and pack away it says time and it’s light to carry. You would be silly not to own this tripod is all I can say.😊
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis When I get home I just wash it with warm soapy water. ..I then make sure I dry it as well. I don’t think I will upgrade to the F38 system because I do like to use a bracket on my camera so honestly I feel like they’re screwing is actually just slows me all down I do like the idea of the quick release spot for me I just really like slowing things down. Awesome feature though imagine what ULANZI will doing in the next two or three years is mind blowing
I'm buying that ball head quick release asap for my zero y. I love that tripod but have never felt totally comfortable simply screwing the plate in. Also noticed when I use my peak design plates on my ulanzi that arca screw randomly just comes loose and ive had some scares with my camera falling off. In a perfect world all of my peak design arca plates would work with that tripod but it looks like I’m buying the ulanzi ball head and capture clip. Glad I did some new research thanks for the video m8
Mate I was gushing after the first time I used it it has revolutionised the way I’ve gone out and shot now no more heavy lugging of that stupid tripod that I had and I’m back out hiking. And capturing some amazing places again. I absolutely just love it
When I read the title and first saw the tripod I read Ulanzi and Coleman. I was kind of curious about that partnership. Did it have a small cooler attachment with it? :-). Cheers.
Not true arca swiss. These ulanzi plates can go to other heads, but other plates cannot go on this head, even when the little screws are removed. My experiences have told me only go to real arca swiss. They meant professional design and makes life much easier. I have a couple of none arca swiss tripods laying around and plates are missing. I'm willing to pay a few hundred more for true arca swiss.
yes - arca swiss compatible. the ulanzi plates can fit into regular Arab Swiss compatible tripods, but only the ulanzi quick release plates work with f38 tripod. Ulanzi stopped selling the Zero Y because the F38 is now the replacement
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisisnot really compatible in real life. There will be many situations to get in trouble when proprietary plates are missing or lost. Hope the company is serious with their users enen after they copied all ideas from others who innovate.
Dang it Mark! I already bought the Ulanzi x Coman without the F38 with your code and have been trying to figure out how to use the F38 system the best on there. I just put my F38 arca plate on the tripod and using it that way. It would've been so nice to have it built in like this!
You can get the removable quick release ballhead or the blank centre column and put a quick release plate on that. I’m going to see if I can get a screw for the zero y so I can attach the quick release base plate directly to it -
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Excellent! Definitely will be looking for a replacement center column to put the F38 plate on then! I can't wait until you make a vid bout the F38 system! It's been amazing and SO easy to use on everything. Keep up the great work!
I don't agree with their ways of doing things imo. I purchased this tripod about 1.5 weeks before they launched the upgraded version. While I don't have anything from the F38 system, it seems a bit absurd to me that they wouldn't ship out the upgrade to early adopters. It's like... the tripod is so new to the market and they're already making iterations of the product. Initially I was a bit disappointed but after looking into the F38 system, I don't think I'll be switching over from PD capture clip so I remain decently content. It's still a perfectly good travel tripod. When I emailed the rep at Ulanzi about the new F38 additions to the tripod, they said I got my discount already for the original tripod. I'm not sure they understood my sentiment. Basically they were implying that with the discount I received, I could be purchasing the F38 additions as an add-on. Here's where I find it absurd. What if I didn't find your video? I wouldn't have known about the 20% discount. I don't see how they can justify a discount on a separate transaction as reason for me to be forking out more just for upgrades that should or could have been included as part of the original design.... especially how with the new ballhead, you can remove the ballhead portion to reveal a flat base center column that can be used to mount other items. That being said, there's only 1 flaw with this original tripod. You can't shoot overhead shots (i.e. food photography flat image) unless you go into undersling mode... or you purchase an extension arm that mounts to the top of the tripod head; by this point, it wouldn't really fit the idea of it being a travel tripod.
I think the original Zero Y is more versatile because you can add any arca swiss plate and you can even add an f38 plate (without buying the separate head) to make it quick release if you want. with the F38 tripod, you can only use an F38 plate. I don’t consider the f38 and upgrade - just another option for people who want quick release
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thanks for your insight! I didn't actually think you'd see this until I finished watching your video hahaha. That actually makes me happy. I wonder if I can find a peak design quick release equivalent for the Zero Y....
I don’t like Ulanzi’s customer support. I have invested in F38 system. Three, four weeks ago I asked if there would be a Zero Y like tripod which I could use with my F38 system and what I got back was a link to buy Ombra. In the meantime, I learned they would release this one. Of course, 20% off is not there anymore…. I wrote them about it and they wanted to give me some LED (which I don’t need) and 10%. This was fine, but it was not 20%. They should have straightened this out.
That $300 tag still has me 😮. Peak Design wasn’t even in the conversation 😂 We are Traveling… that price tag is serious for the basic quick shots other than time lapses/long exposure.
It's pronounced EEou-Lan-Dz in Chinese. Translated to Excellent Basket or Optimized Basket. I don't know the meaning of basket in the branding as I don't know the company history. Maybe a basket of useful photography tools?
❤great video 😊 did You maybe use leofoto tripods? There’s leofoto LS-225cex it also have levelling platform with ulanzi ballhead it’s around 1kg. Maybe You have some suggestions which to choose:)
Leofoto Ranger LS-223CEX Table Tripod is also a great option if you need a small, light mini tripod, small enough to carry in a webbing pouch and the spikes keep it nice and secure
13:00 Have they improved the centre part? Whole centre part is plastic on the 2019 model and has play, that's a no for me. Have they fixed that? I saw a superb review by bigheadtaco where this was a con, his review is 3 months old, but the one he reviewed is from 2019. So nice to see they improved this, like the tool included inside the column.I already have Peak Design Travel tripod Alu, so I will get the Peak Design Universal Head Adapter.
the peak design has a more solid centre column when extended - less play for sure. I generally use my ulanzi and peak tripods for photos with the ball head recessed.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis But is it still plastic? I think I will stick with the epak design and just get a different head. Only complaint I have about the peak design travel tripod is the tool is not hidden in the collumn, and the phone holder ha spastic parts so it fails after few uses. And the feet can't be switched to spikes easily have to unscrew them to install spikes. I saw a tripod that let syou turn the feet revealing spikes. That's a neat feature. But I probably won't need spikes.
Damn it Mark, I'm just back from 5 months in the Yukon series producing a show on Discovery and your channel compels me to buy not only this Ulanzi tripod but also the FX-30 which is a must have alongside the ZVE-10 for social media content. An APC-S that offers 120 fps at 4k, are you kidding me? And are you going to do a more in-depth comparison of the ZVE-10 and the FX-30 with side by side footage? Would love to see that.
I would like to know where the sudden financial surge is coming from for Ulanzi. A few years ago, I remember their social media ads done by a part-timer with atrocious design and naming. Suddenly, they are being taken seriously.
They certainly have turned into an awesome company that pumps out innovative and awesome things. You should see their new backpacks. They’re fantastic. For me they have that crazy quick release system, my fav tripods, backpacks, and more. Everyone starts small, but the tech world moves fast and they are clearly growing rapidly.
Hey Mark. Love your videos about these. Missed the Oct. 11 cutoff for the Zero F38. Any possibilties of another 20% off coupon for this? I had used your earlier link for the Zero Y but when I added the Zero F38 to the cart with the coupon "Mark" it said it didn't apply. Don't they realize who you are?! 🙂 Hope all's well. Thanks.
my code “Crisis” will get you 10% off the f38. they wouldn’t give me better than that 🤣. they still however will honour the “Mark” at 20%off for the zero y. so I’ve been telling people to get the zero y with the code Mark and then buy tthe F38 head. The you get it all at a pretty good deal.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks. Yeah I know everyone can get the 10% off in various methods. I asked them on Facebook about a possible 20% off telling them I missed the cutoff. But they said I can only get 10% off. Wonder if they have any Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales? Seems like it's too hard to convert the Zero Y to the F38. I'll wait for now. Thanks.
the three thumbscrews on the ulanzi backpack clip forever haunt my nightmares and are probably the number one reason I got the PD capture instead xD still, no regrets. The ulanzi tripod absolutely slays the PD though, because the price hike isn't worth their admittedly immaculate warranty and quality, not this time!
I agree - I like the peak design clip better - but I’m torn because the ulanzi has a whole quick release system!! I hope they change the backpack clip. in fact, I’m going to do a video and try to get them to do that. They are pretty good at listening to feedback.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis It would be a long time coming, but peak design making a wider clip ecosystem is missing their own mark as well... They have their new slimlink for mobile, they could adapt that mount for a lot of lighter stuff like monitors etc. Ah well, only the future can tell!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis that's the info I needed! I bought the Zero Y after watching your video and using your discount code THANKS, now they've released the F38 so I bought the replacement head thinking I could use my PD Capture Clip plate, doh! So now I'm like I'll just buy the Falcam Backpack Clip... but now I'm torn....how much influence do you have on design is what I'm thinking right now ;-) Mmmm hold out, or bite the bullet, mmmmmm Anyhoo thanks for the great video, all the way from New Zealand, Scott!
Ulanzi actually sells a plate that is compatible with peak design I'm going to pick one up myself for my peak design!! www.ulanzi.com/collections/falcam-f38-quick-release-series/products/falcam-f38-pd-quick-release-plate-2465?aff=574
I realize the max load on this is listed as 6 Kg. In the real world, what would likely be the longest lens you would feel safe to use with this tripod? 400mm f5.6 and a dSLR or would that be pushing it? I actually have a Pentax 150-450mm lens 2kg +2 kg body. I'm just wondering if that would be a bit too much to ask.
I would think if you’re really getting a big lens and camera body, the travel tripods probably aren’t the best idea. peak design says it can “support” a ton of weight, but the reality of these travel tripods is that they’re legs don’t really spread very wide when fully extended. so long lenses may make it easier to tip over the tripod. I think you’d actually fine with the setup, but I’d probably want to get a heavier wider tripod (although it’s less convenient)
Is it compatible with plates from Peak design? I'm already heavily invested in PD. I have their backpack mounts, plates for my gimbals, other tripods with Arca. I'd definitely want to get this tripod if I can use its quick release with the PD plate.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank for your reply. Just to make sure I'm reading this right. The zero Y won't work with PD quick release plate? I get that the F38 uses ulanzi standard quick release and won't be compatible. But the Zero Y claims Arca compatibility, and PD quick release works well with Arca heads. So I'm guessing it's another example of "Arca" type that is not exactly Arca compatible?
Yes - I thought you were talking about the f38 tripod, The Zero Y will accept the peak design plate. But it will not be quick release of course. The Arca Swiss compatibility is based on the width of the base plate.
Love mine, sadly my hook backed out and it was lost, I don’t think Ulanzi sells that part by itself as I don’t see it on their site, and the separately sold center column doesn’t show the hook/hex key coming with it.
Ulanzi actually sells a plate that is compatible with peak design I'm going to pick one up myself for my peak design!! www.ulanzi.com/collections/falcam-f38-quick-release-series/products/falcam-f38-pd-quick-release-plate-2465?aff=574
Thanks for your video!!! Very helpful. Now that we can get the PD compatible plate for the F38, is there any reason why I would need to get the Acra-Swiss zero y lightweight tripod? PS Also appreciate your discount codes.
For the most part I use the f38 all the time. I have the plates attached to everything and I just slide them on and off. I have the peak design compatible plate and that works great too with peak design.
The arca mount is compatible with arca plates and a variety of other arca-compatible plates. The F38 mount is only compatible with F38 plates. Companies want you adopting their ecosystem so you get locked into it and keep buying more of it. If you just stay on arca, you can use anything arca. There are plenty of arca quick-release mounts now, which is fun! But not many are integrated into full heads and tripods for max size and weight efficiency, so you'd need to plop your arca quick-release mount on top of another mounting system.
What happened to the ulanzi quick release system review? I don’t see it in your video listings 🤷♂️🤔 uh just asking for a friend , ulanzi I think you know him! 😳😂
while they are waterproof - it is not recommended for saltwater - all tripods will be damaged by saltwater. most photographers will take apart every piece of their tripod and flush with fresh water after. if you plan to put any tripod or in saltwater consistently, you should look at getting a protective sleeve like this amzn.to/3ejj6Bi here is a good article about tripod maintenance www.lightstalking.com/cleaning-protecting-tripod/
HI Mark, How sturdy are these tripods at full height with central column extended? Would you recommend them for 1.5kg 3000mm EFL ultrazoom (Nikon P1000)?
It can hold the weight, and I’ve used a150-600 sigma on it, but honestly I would get a heavy duty tripod for that. These things are so light and travel friendly, I would want something heavier and larger for a big lens like that.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thank you for your response Mark, so I gather that i would also need to purchase a separate leveling base and a fluid-head to mount on the tripod? I could not use the ball head it comes with as a leveling base.
no - not the f38 quick release on this tripod here. Falcam have a new tripod that is quick please and will accept the other Arca Swiss plates. I reviewed it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KtEY5RyT81w.htmlsi=8kpsnNh8YA_lfbtZ
Hi there, i have the original arca swiss model and love the tripod, but find it a bit annoying in those time crunch scenarios to keep screwing and unscrewing it in - Would i be able to buy just the F38 ball head and replace my current ballhead? just wanted to confirm i dont need to get the center column or anything else as Im getting a bit confused with everything, thanks
@@roybar-shalom6594 yes, you can buy the f38 head and turn the zero y into a zero f38. Here is the link www.ulanzi.com/products/ulanzi-f38-quick-release-travel-tripod-accessories?aff=574
Everyone! This guy was the first to review the Ulanzi Zero-Y tripod! Just in case you didn’t hear him say it multiple times. He was first. #1. The premier review.
It can hold 40 pounds so I think you’ll be safe! Edit because I’m dumb: the F38 ballhead can hold 3kg which is around 6.5 pounds. The Zero Y ballhead can hold 5kg which is a little over 11 pounds. I would go for the Zero Y with the arca swiss plate if you’re using an A7IV as the F38 will struggle with that kind of weight. Overall, the whole tripod is capable of holding 40 pounds or 18kg.
Thanks for the video. I was just looking for information comparing the two tripods. So now the real question is, which tripod will become your go-to travel tripod?
I’m not sure!! at first I thought I would just use the standard zero y. but now I’ve attached little quick release plates to all my cameras - so I can now switch and switch with no trouble. I’ll try out the quick release one for a few weeks and see. 🤣🤣
I have the Pgytech quick release system (Snaplock mount and plate). Can I mount it on the Zero Y? Is the ballhead the only difference between Zero Y and F38? Thank you
You cannot use the Pgytech unfortunately. Yes - the ballhead the only difference between the zero y and f38. However the zero y arca Swiss will not click into the f38 ballhead.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank you for the reply. I meant the Pgytech snaplock has a snap mount and plate. Can the mount (arca swiss compatible) be used on the arca of Zero Y? Sorry if I'm a little bit confused. Thank you
I don't know why but you remind me of the young Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can :-P Great presentation! I am on the edge with the zero y. I finally want to get rid of any excuses for not taking a tripod with me as with my old big and heavy Manfrotto...
used it for one year now. It got rust over all moving parts, several clamps for the leg fail and I frequently need to use adhersibe. knobs are to small and fiddely. You need to thighten the camera twice every time to make sure its not coming of. my one one dropped to the ocean once. Its light weight yeah, but not a long term product. dont know any of those u tubers really got out with that trypod….
I almost bought it because I love this channel, but I have seen also that if a new tripod has issues Ulanzi would literally reply "fix it yourself with glue": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-obl3gF5RySg.html
most people have great experiences with Ulanzi, and their tripods are under warranty. not sure what happened with the guy in the video you sent - but I haven’t heard anything like that. Used mine almost everyday for 2 years now.
