Oh and whoever said Evita made a 'mockery' of it, you must not have been there. Her ENERGY was SO much in the spirit of the music that she just spazzed and lost it all the perfect ways that art == freedom.

Credit to both ladies who were excellent, but despite Evita's win, Sharon is the beauty who was most mesmerising.

Its been a while, but I figured I'd revisit-- To those who responded to my question, which was meant to induce intellectual 'categorized' responses to what 'blues' music means to you, and I'm talking specifically to bluesdancingca and VotreDjPocail , and whoever else was over critiquing styles because of this world 'blues', you did not disappoint. My initial reason for bothering to comment on this thread was when people were saying this wasn't blues music. There is a trend in the swing dance community to make ignorant claims such as this. Before you get all up in arms about this and quote some 'history of blues' or Ma Rainey Biography, just know that I am the trumpet player and bandleader on this particular recording, and I have been playing 'New Orleans Jazz' and 'Blues' and whatever the hell you want to call this stuff for many years in New Orleans ain places like the Spotted Cat, and Jazz Fest, and Preservation Hall, to name a few, as a full time musician. And if you came to New Orleans and tried telling a single musician here that this isn't 'a blues' they would walk away. If you needed to put this particular song in a 'time period' which is already weird because its from now, it would be more 20's than anything. Brothels, dirty shit, the lyrics about 'grind some more with me', the Blues. Just Because Ma Rainey popularized it doesn't mean it wasn't being played on every street corner for many many years before her, during her, and after her, by hundreds or thousands of other great and not so great musicians. I'm sorry to say, I truly am, because I love the swing dance community and some of my favorite people to play for are people getting down with each other on the dance floor, but very often in this dance community along with other super intellectual communities there is this need to put all these things in boxes. This particular song is a Blues, a 12 Bar Blues, the 'Organ Grinder Blues', and its about Grinding, and lord knows what else. . I know its not just about a man an how he left her or beat her with just guitar and piano or whatever 'blues' is according to you and your Ma Rainey and Ligntning Hopkins (who were FANTASTIC, AMAZING musicians) definitions, but anyone who knows anything about really PLAYING this music or REALLY dancing to it with soul (and this goes for the dance critics too) knows its just about a FEELING, met with a structure, which, in this case, is a blues. And this 'Blues' has been bein played every single day in New Orleans, and many other parts of the world, for a long, long time. Just please be careful about over categorizing older jazz and dance forms. These songs were played like this in the teens and 20s in brothels, and yes, then in the dance halls, etc etc... But lets not let the history books dictate whats happening now. The more open we are to blending all of these styles and taking off the labels, the more we can all get together and form new ones.

Sharon employed real jazz/blues moves, and synced her movements to all the beats - she really got into the soul of what blues means. Evita was all over the place, using moves from hip-hop and basically relied on antics/being outrageous to win over the audience.

Old N-O Jazz from de 30-40' used a lot for Burlesque. It has a base of blues, but it's Jazz. Blues is cultural, it's mostly about hard times and women :P ahahaha Ma Rainey was one of the first one to popularise the 12 bar blues (Blues as we know pretty much today) and talked a lot about men ;)

I would LOVE to dance that style, does somebody know a dvd? Is some kind of jazz specifically or blues solo...? I want to search correctly! I love Sharon style, I recommend her burlesque dvds :-)

Thank you for your advice! I'll buy it too :) Although after that I don't know...Maybe tutorials online, because in my city there's no jazz dance lessons, well in Spain it's not so famous, and my city is small. If you know more instructional DVDs, I would thank you :)))

besides, the music is dixiejazz, not blues. This kind of music was played in the dixieland time, in the 20's in New Orléans.
@joshuajoakley
@joshuajoakley 10 лет назад
Albie Back It's 12 bar, and most definitely blues. Organ Grinder Blues is a blues classic. And dixieland jazz had multiple components, INCLUDING the blues. So calling something dixieland doesn't disqualify it as blues.

Why do they call it solo blues? I would call it solo burlesque, because the music is not blues.

Yeah, the dancing not's blues either... Really makes a mockery of it in fact, especially the winner, Evita. Ugh... At least Sharon was really dancing to the music, even if it was more burlesque than blues.
