Jimmy Kay from Canada's The Metal Voice spoke to Ex Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth in Montreal Quebec Canada on April 16 2019 at the Piranha bar.
Uli Spoke about his Triple Anniversary tour and did a deep dive into the making and recording of the classic live Scorpions album Tokyo Tapes. Uli Spoke about Tokyo Tapes set list, to the choice of cover songs, adding the audience noise from Peter Frampton's famous live album, Frampton Comes Alive. Uli also spoke about archival Super 8 film footage he has in his vault from all his years in the Scorpions whereas 70% of it has not yet been seen.

What a mellow, humble guy. A unique talent, so ahead of his time. And he looks great with his hair alteration, he deserves it! No ego at all, he so happy to praise Michael and In Search of The Peace of Mind. He has no ego yet has a huge aura.

Great interview, I hope ULI puts out the unseen footage!!! Be a great 70's era documentary of the Scorpions. Awesome to see him talking about TOKYO TAPES, one of my favorite LIVE albums of all time. I bought it back in 1980, and I still dig out my remastered disc often . THumbs up on this !

I hope he's come around to enjoying the production and mix of 'Tapes. To my ears, the greatest live album with the most magical capture of a live performance, balancing live ambience with instruments. Even if they did port in some of the audience sound! He has a great sense of humour and this is an excellent interview, thank you!

Love this album. Hard to believe it could have been so much better if they'd left off the "weaker" tracks - Hound Dog/Long Tall Sally, In Search Of The Peace Of Mind, Steamrock Fever - and replaced them with far stronger tracks, of which there were many - e.g. Drifting Sun, Sails Of Charon, Far Away, Virgin Killer, Hellcat, Catch Your Train, Life's Like A River, Yellow Raven ... loads more, take your pick.

@@kevinmcguinness1113 It's honestly my favourite live album, even though I'm into AC/DC even more than Scorps. There's just nothing that gets the balance so right to get a live feel; the ambience, the balance of room (venue) and near-stage sound. Amazingly well produced. I'd boot out Hound Dog/Long Tall Sally but everything else is sound. Some good ones in your list, I love Sails of Charon, incredible guitar piece for its time and still now.

This is a great interview!! Can't believe I've missed it. Also I can't believe Uli didn't think "Catch your train" was good enough to be on the album. It's one of my favourites from the Uli years of Scorpions.

Hey, Montreal and Metal. Well, hard rock guitar man. You guys have the legendary Frank Marino. Do some history children! I once read that Uli was in Montreal and ate dinner at Frank's house. Man, I would've loved to hear those to talking Hendrix or something that night. Two very different paths and interpretations but two great guys and great players.

Still Scorpions best guitarist and plays on my 3 favourite Scorpions albums Virgin Killer, In Trance, Taken by Force. Scorpions peaked with Tokyo Tapes.

Uli,s talking some not straight facts here like saying that the audience clapping of Tokio Tapes was fake and taken from the Pete Frampton's comes alive recording.... what the heck Uli... you can hear in TT people chanting Scorpions, Scorpions, then the Herman's solo, then people singing in Kojo No Tsuki, then klaus asking ''do you like Rock'n roll? '' and the people's response, then ppl screaming in Japanese and a long etc... Frampton's album was recorded in SF and NY. also he probably doesn't remember his own solo in Hound dog which is fucking amazing...

I remember (from the U.K.) Electric Sun being this sort of counter when discussing the best Scorpions era (Lovedrive to Blackout) and still being astonishing (vocals aside - sorry). Uli is an amazing guitarist - Michael Schenker aside way better than Jabbs and Rudi Schenker (sorry) he, Michael Schenker and Klaus Meine are the defining elements of early Scorpions. It was an explosion of amazing german rock music. Would PAY to have early Scorpions footage all in one place.

Uli don't play any metal. You ruined the beginning of your best interview. I got Uli to hold up my Stratocastor lean on my Mercedes and take pictures and film the entire show on my phone from less than 10 yards away but I kinda upset him alittle
