After checking out of my hotel I stopped off at Glascarnoch Dam for some stunning views of Glascarnoch Loch and the valley below. It was close to another scenic spot that overlooked a picturesque pebble filled river surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful Scottish countryside. One of the incredible things about the North Coast 500 is just how much there is to see on route, especially on the spectacular west coast of Scotland.
I made my first stop of the day at a National Trust Scotland nature reserve called Corrieshalloch Gorge - a place famous for its mile-long canyon, woodland trails and a 45 metre waterfall known as the Falls of Measach. I decided to take a short walk across the Victorian-era suspension bridge to a viewpoint of the waterfall, and although the most dramatic views were from the bridge itself it was still great to get out and explore the area on foot.
Within a few hours I was back on the road again heading for Ullapool - one of the largest settlements in the area and a place noted for its bars, restaurants and nightlife. Sadly, as I was travelling in COVID-19 times all of the pubs and bars had strict social distancing guidelines and all live events and performances were cancelled, so I decided to explore the streets, ferry port and history of Ullapool rather than any social or entertainment venues.
Although small, there's plenty to see and do and it was good to take a leisurely walk around just to see what was about. I loved the row of quaint white terraced houses looking over Loch Broom and it was fun flying my drone over the boats out on the water - until it started to rain that is! The weather in Scotland is unpredictable at best and it was one of those days that kept flipping between sunny spells and showers, sometimes even both at the same time!
Ullapool was an important Herring Port and the village was enlarged over a hundred years ago for that reason. It's surrounded by Scottish hills and the vast waters of Loch Broom. If you're on the NC500 it's definitely worth a visit!
