Smart to have the winner as the only nickel plated case 😂 loving this series with someone so experienced in African dangerous game.

I just picked up a ZZK 602 chambered in 416 rem mag. Its my first big bore rifle, quite a step up from the 9.3x62. Hope to get to Africa one day.

If I had to choose I'd pick the 404 Jeffrey. Seems to be the best compromise between stopping power and recoil.

My favorite fact about the 470 NE is that during WWI, the British Army developed an AP version of it, but they didn't adopt it.
@Thebiggamehuntingblog
@Thebiggamehuntingblog Месяц назад
I think that round (and some other big bore cartridges like it) did see very limited use against German snipers protecting themselves from small arms fire behind thin armor plate.
@Winkler_B_Rudolf_1911
@Winkler_B_Rudolf_1911 Месяц назад
They also used between 1914 and 1916 the : 333 Jeffery, 375 H&H, 405 Winchester, 416 Rigby, 450 NE, 475 N°2 NE, 505 Gibbs, 577 NE, And 600 NE. In addition to the 470 for that purpose, and against vehicles and aircraft too, before developing the Mk VII 303 AP round to replace them. That's what I've read about their use during WWI.

Thank you very much for another excellent video with Kevin . I've never heard either of you two gentlemen ever mention "dwell time" in regards to possible killing power with lower velocities. Is there anything too that ??? Regards and thank you again Kevin.

I have an idea for an informative video. Something lost in a lot ballistics is the importance of barrel legnth of a rifle. It might be cool to show some comparisons of ballistic performances and see how those numbers change as barrel legnth increases, or mainly, decreases. I was surprised to know that a 6.5 grendel shot from a 24" barrel is almost the same ballistics as a 6.5 creedmoor out of a 20" barrel. Similar situations are found with 6.5 creed and 6.5 PRC. Also the 308, 30.06, and 300 win. And I'm sure plenty more examples of this. But I can imagine lots of new shooters might think differently of the compact barrel legnths if they knew the impact it has on the ballistics. Might be interesting?

That's an excellent idea!

Exactly, and especially if you throw a sound moderator in the mix. A 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger with 20" barrel does the same as 375 HH and 416 Rigby with 24" barrel.

What a great video. I watched it from start to finish. What a wealth of knowledge and information your guest is. Will you do a show on the . 500's? Also I've heard from two PH's that say there is a noticeable difference in the animals initial reaction when hit from a 500 or 600 that they don't see with the 458's. If you could ask the good doctor that question I would love to hear his experience.

I think it's worth considering that these rounds are going to be shot by normal human beings - that is, that the free recoil energy cannot be ignored as a component of their effectiveness. While I'd admit that, say, a .458 Winchester Magnum isn't the most powerful round shown above, it does have one thing going for it: it clobbers the shooter's shoulder less than the others, and may - as a result - be more readily available for a follow-on shot. Two well-placed shots have a value compared to one more powerful (particularly if the one shot is less precisely placed because of recoil sensitivity/flinch) shot. Yes, the more powerful rounds have a benefit, but I think there's also something to be said for a cartridge that is well and good enough, that can be more easily handled in the field.

Just got back from Limpopo about 10 days ago, got a cape buffalo with my 9.3x62. Even as mild as the recoil and muzzle jump is with that, the idea of a quick follow up with anything but a double, well, probability is pretty low to get another round accurately off in under 1 or 2 seconds. Even at only about 30 yards, the brush was so thick the buff disappeared by the time I was able to get another round chambered, and I didn't need prompting from my PH to reload.

I've had my eye on a Ruger Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger, but at 7.8lbs it sounds like it's 2lbs too light. The cartridge looks efficient and ideal for a .416 caliber though.

18:38 What you say is not true. The first cartridge with an rebatet rim was the 11.2x72 Schüler. By the way, you could/should have mentioned them in your video. August Schüler was a German gunsmith from Suhl and had already patented the idea with the rebatet rim in 1904. He also did the same thing with the 11.2x60 Schüler, .404 Schüler Magnum and the .500 Schüler (12,7x70) now known as the .500 Jeffery. The British generally stole/copied a lot of ideas from the Germans and sold them as their own. .425 WR, .275 Rigby, .500 Jeffery are just a few of countless examples. In return, they passed laws that effectively banned German construction for big game hunting in the British colonies. Well-known examples of this are the minimum caliber 9.5 mm/.375, with which the 9.3x62, 9.3x74R and 9.3x64 were deliberately banned from their colonies, which in turn were very successful in the German, French and Belgian colonies. If Mauser and August Schüler had not delivered any systems to England back then, the British would probably not have had a single decent repeating rifle at their disposal to this day

I appreciate your comment. Perhaps it would have been more accurate for me to say "one of the first" or "the first major cartridge" to use a rebated rim. For what it's worth, this was my source: www.riflemagazine.com/425-westley-richards-rifle-system The reason I neglected to mention most of those other Schüler cartridges (though I discuss the 500 Jeffery in my latest episode here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SSlQJ7KtL9o.html) was because they just weren't all that popular in Africa. Do you have personal experience hunting with or shooting the 11.2x72, 11.2x60, or 404 Schüler Magnum?

Roosevelt was a fan of the .405 Winchester. There are documented cases of American hunters taking their sharps rifles to Africa.

You're not wrong about the 405 Winchester or the Sharps rifles. Like I said at the beginning of this episode, that's not what those cartridges were designed for though and that is why I did not include them. Kevin and I touch on some of those cartridges in this episode though: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PcyOjJ9dl9c.html

Ouch, .416 Weatherby with a muzzle brake. Great story, I’m not a fan of muzzle brakes on any rifle if you are next to the shooter. .460 Weatherby, no thank you. I have an empty case in my collection which I’m not sorry to say I did not shoot.
