Remember: The ones in the mall, with the printed price tags, would be fix-priced, most of the ones in other shops/kiosks/stands that are without price tags could be lowered by as much as 75%, you have got to haggle a little bit because these sellers need your business, they would rather have a sell rather than none at all
Dear friends, many westerners have no concept of the ingrained "terima kasih" of the interplay between the merchant and the potential customer in the Balinese culture. Simply going shopping to buy trinkets to bring home is best reserved for Carefore and the like with their fixed price tags. Central to the relationship of the seller/buyer is the social interplay which is revered as an almost sacred duty. I have witnessed many westerners attempt to obtain really nice works of craftsmanship for a dirt cheap price. Everyone knows the asking price is inflated. And there is an expectation on both sides of the bargain that the price which is finally agreed apon will be found satifactory to both parties. The key to gaining that final price takes humble interplay which meets a social need for happines. This takes time and a bit of fun loving skill to accomplish. Unfortunately, many westerners do not take the time, set their schedule to succinct and fail to accomodate for the art of bartering. This ignorance of social custom and need causes hard feelings in the seller as the lack of realistic attempts to interact is found to be severely rude. Many times I have seen a westerner making a poor attempt to obtain an item by turning away and saying, "no, . . .no too much" having offered their final price which is rediculously low. Many hard working sellers will finally agree at that pittiful price in order to save face. What a horrible thing which is just cruel mistreatment of another person. People as such build their own karma. My belief that theirs is coming some day, beware. Would it not be better to meet the seller and create a sense of social belonging and value for both?? Spend a good amount of time with the merchant. If they see you are not the typical tourist and are really interested in bartering for a bargain, enjoy a cup of tea and a bisquit. Chat a bit, share photos of your kids, your home. Take the time to learn a bit of Bahasa Indonesia, your kind, sincere actions will be rewarding for you and the merchant. Best, Kenn
