New York City is a true melting pot when it comes to cultures and cuisines from all over the world. You can find just about any cuisine in the world there! Come with me on my latest Big Apple food adventure as I try Bangali food in Queens, NYC!
For this adventure, I set off to Jackson Heights, Queens, and met up with my friend Nikita to explore the Bangladeshi and Nepali district.We’d have everything from puchka to biryani and much more!

We started at Amdo Momo, a food truck that’s said to sell the best momos in town. The beef momos came with radish on the side. They’re almost like xiaolongbao! I added some hot sauce, which was like fire in my mouth but paired so well with the juicy, meaty, and soft momo.
It was so tasty! They were somewhat similar to the momos I had in Bhutan, but also slightly different. Then, we saw some retail shops selling clothing, accessories, snacks, groceries, and more.
One of the shops sold desi jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, and bangles, as well as slippers with colorful and intricate designs. The owner took me into the back to where the men’s shoes were. They came in a variety of colors. The guy was so nice!
Then, we headed to Bangali Street Food, the first fuchka food truck in the United States! Fuchka is essentially like Indian pani puri and consist of a hollow rice ball stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas, onions, masalas, and a spiced water called pani.
I made a new subscriber there and tried the fuchka with him! Then, we moved on to the jhal muri, which contains puffed rice, green chilies, and masala. It was so good and spicy as well!
Next, Nikita and I headed to Apna Bazar, a local farmer’s market across the street. There, they were making fresh sugarcane juice and selling lots of fresh vegetables. This sugarcane juice contained a lot of ginger. It was sweet and had a lot of ginger spice!
Then, we headed to Premium Sweets & Restaurant, which sells biryani, curry, lamb, chicken, eggplant, Indian sweets, and more. I’d eaten enough savory dishes and decided to get some sweets instead!
We got kala jamun, baby gulab jamun, and gurer sandesh. The gurer sandesh comes wrapped in paper and was sweet, dense, and crumbly with brown sugar and caramel flavor. The kala jamun is a Bangladeshi sweet similar to gulab jamun, except the color and shape are different.
Next was the kachi biryani, which contains goat and a boiled egg. I dug right in with my hands. It was scorching hot but the goat was lean, gamy, and really tasty with the rice. I wasn’t a huge fan of the egg, but the goat and rice were so full of flavor!
What an amazing way to end my Bangali food tour of Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC!
