CHICAGO, USA - Welcome to Chicago, one of the greatest food cities in the United States and home to the famous deep dish pizza… but did you know thin crust has been around for much longer than deep dish. In this Chicago pizza tour we’re learning about the history of deep dish pizza in chicago and we’ll try one of the best thin crust pizzas in the city as well! Chicago is a city that loves pizza!
Pizzeria Uno (goo.gl/maps/pXBvzUtjVohkeoTBA) - Number Uno - Price - $37.99 for Large - We’re starting this pizza tour a Pizzeria Uno where Chicago deep dish pizza was invented in 1943.
Vito & Nick's Pizzeria, Chicago, Illinois (goo.gl/maps/SbbN2mgcycvoForXA)
Ordered (we can just title the first pizza): Sausage + Hot Giardiniera - Price - $22.25 for Large - Then we head out to South Chicago for one of the most legendary thin crust pizzas, and for sure one of the best pizzas I’ve had - I loved the crust and the peppers.
Lou Malnati's Pizzeria - Lincolnwood, Lincolnwood, Illinois (goo.gl/maps/cBuw84KXyooe9xCA8), The Malnati - Price - $31.99 for Large, The Lou - Price - $34.89 - Next up on this tour we’re going to the original location of Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, one of the most loved and iconic pizzas in all of Chicago. It didn’t disappoint!
Pequod’s Pizza, Morton Grove, Illinois (goo.gl/maps/pXGi8dPNTgVscKui7) - Pan Pizza w/ Sausage and Pepperoni - Price - $29.35 for Medium - Finally, we’re going to Pequod’s Pizza, rated as one of the top five pizzas in the USA and known for invented the caramelized burnt crust.
Thank you for joining me on this ultimate Chicago pizza food tour!

You need to try Nancy's, Giordano's, Bartoli's, Geno's East, and Bacino's, for deep dish and stuffed. You know there is stuffed pizza and then there is deep dish and they are 2 different, right? And you need to try some other thin crust places like Home Run Inn, Aurelio's, D'Agostino's. Also, a real NYC style Italian Deli called Freddy's in Cicero is a must, where you can get Sicilian style pizza and other types of pizza and authentic Italian Deli items like Arancini, etc. Discovering Chicago food is all about going beyond the tourist trap local chains in the loop and north side by venturing out all over the city and suburbs for those diamonds in the rough.

Mark, Giardiniera is a mix of veggies and not a style of peppers. It is a mix of chopped vegetables, mostly cauliflower, carrots bell peppers, celery & chile peppers in pickled vinegar first, then olive oil is added later. I grew up in a Sicilian/German family in NYC. My Dads, mom, and dad lived upstairs she used to make this from scratch. I am just 70 years old, and I miss her version of this. The store-bought version of it is a far cry from hers. She passed away back in June of 1968, she passed away just a few days after her 68th Birthday. I was 15 years old, I had just graduated from grammar school and would be going into High School in September.

14 years in Chicago as a pizza fanatic. Pequod is truly insanely good, good enough that people who don't like deep dish may like it. After that Uno/Due, Lou Malnati and Geno's East are all very good, as is lesser known Pizano's. Giordano's is the one people like that I personally don't care for. For other kinds of pizza I could go on forever. I actually ate at Piece most ofter that is New Haven style. The chicago tavern style thin crust everywhere has is almost always good yet rarely mindblowing.

You just hit the 2 extremes- deep dish and thin. Chicago has everything in between. Lots of medium crust pizza out there. Also, there's Home Run Inn which is pretty unique with their flaky butter crust pizza. Whatever the style, Chicago pizza just has a unique taste to it I haven't found anywhere else.

Good stuff Mark - wish you could have visited the original Aurelio’s in Homewood just south of the city. The thin crust “Super Six” cooked in the old oven is like nothing else! Also, if you’re into deep dish and like a sweet sauce, Arenello’s in Glenwood or Tinley Park is delicious, and a deep dish experience of its own.

I went to Downtown Chicago with my wife the past two years on a business trips. Between the two visits, I tried all these pizza places. As much as I try to like Chicago Pizza, I frequently leave disappointed. I found one place in Chicago that had good Pizza. It was on the way to the pier at a place called Robert’s. Everything about that pizza was awesome. You can’t beat their crust.

Unfortunately you will not find true Chicago pizza downtown. It’s all tourist places. You need to travel to neighborhoods outside of downtown Chicago to truly find real Chicago pizza. These gems are deeply rooted all over. I can’t remember when I tried any restaurants downtown. I will say Robert’s is great, however not a true representation of Chicago pizza.

I was surprised Derek didn't take you to get pizza on the last video, but I'm glad you did it this way, hitting up the well known places. Lots of less known outside of the Chicagoland area but all so good. Supposedly tavern style didn't originate in Chicago, but it along with the so called "square cut" (the way Vito and Nick's pizza was cut) is as much a part of Chicagoland as deep dish.

Back in the 1980's Thin Crust was 95% of what Pizza restaurants offered. I remember asking for Italian beef as an ingreadient. The staff had to go back in the kitchen and ask if that was ok.This pizza called Pan Pizza is actually called "Stuffed Pizza" at least thats what it was called in the 1980's
