ULTIMATE Dating Allen Edmonds Guide with DATE CODES!

This is my most complete and in-depth video on how to tell the manufacture date of Allen Edmonds Shoes. For AE shoes made between 1972 through 2003/2004 with a 4 digit date code, this video should be able to help you identify the exact manufacture date in most cases. My “How to Date Allen Edmonds Shoes” video released in October of 2018 only discussed the changing AE logos, therefore only helps narrow the manufacture date down to a range of years. For example, Allen Edmonds used some logos for as short 6 years, and some for as long as 24 years.

Great to see the information continue to develop. Nice work, Bob. To add: 1) I think the day of the week portion of the code only runs 1 through 5 (Monday through Friday). 2) Style codes that begin with a 0 (as the prefix) indicate a Brooks Brothers collaboration/model. 3) According to Styleforum user Aenonymous, the Sanford switched from 5 eyelets to 4 eyelets between fall 2000 and spring 2001 (post date 28 May 2020).

My question would be on the day of the week number. Is that based off of a 7 day week Sunday-Saturday, or a 5/6 day work week Monday-Friday/Saturday. Also, if it’s based on the 7 day week, how do the British run their calendars, Sunday being day 1 or day 7? Not all countries follow our American standards. Here in Japan I’ve seen calendars that start with Monday on the far left. Not all, but I see them from time to time and no one thinks it’s odd.

Mr. Powers - - I really like your videos and am learning a great deal. Thank you for your work. ~~ At 18:20, what is it called on AE shoes when you can see the nails following the outer edge contour of the insoles. I have had 5 or 6 pairs of AE over the years, and none of mine have had these visible nail heads. It seems that on most Brooks Brothers shoes made by AE we see this same feature of visible nails.

Hi Bob. So informative, thank you very much for your help. I have a couple pairs of AE Baltic, black and brown. Thanks to your amazing video I was able to date them to 1982 and 1983. Here’s the mystery. The model isn’t in either the 82 or 83 catalogs that I looked up. 🤷‍♂️ Models 0274-(Brown) 1433 (date); and 0214-(Black) 1612 (date). Both are pebble grain, so I was looking at the catalogs to see if they ever sold regular calf skin but I literally can’t find them. Are you familiar the Baltic model? Thank you.

Very in-depth and informative! I do have one question: I have a pair of Byron’s with the 89-13 insole logo, “Made in USA”, and the second 4-digit code. This would date it somewhere between 2001-2004 if I’m not mistaken. However, the second code is “2884”. Now, being that the last digit is 4, I assume they’re a 2004 model, but I’m curious as to why the third digit would be 8, given it’s supposed to represent the day of the week. Any idea?

Uh, hmm… that’s a great question. I have no idea! I think I might remember reading on Styleforum once that the week and day could change order, but that still doesn’t solve it. I’d take that question to Styleforum or to the Facebook Allen Wdmonds Enthusiasts group. I’m sure someone there will know!

This is so great!!! Thank you very much. There is something vague about the date code though. In front of me I have a pair of Byron's (produced until 2006 according to catalogue) date code says "2383". So 2003 I assume. But there is no 8th day in the week ...so something must be off. In any case, 2003 is a safe bet, and I'm sure the years definitely do match in general. Just whatever is supposed to be days and weeks may somehow vary. Again, thank you so much. Great video!!! I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Chester. The logo is Allen Edmonds with the letter “E” underneath the double “II” and Made in USA. The model is 1903 followed by 1743. Is that 1993? Thank you for the amazing video!

I get the 17th week and 4th day of 1993. So that would be April 29th, 1993. I’ve also noticed on further inspection that they have a channel groove for the stitching. That could indicate 1993 or 2003.

Are these date codes all the same in different brands? And how about colour, are there codes for the colour of the shoe located somewhere inside the shoe? Great informative information Bod. 🙏

Defenitely no, they are not the same in different brands. The only two brands I've seen decoded are Allen Edmonds and Florshiem. Florsheim used to use a 2 Letter date code. www.vcleat.com has it explained, but the last letter of the Florsheim date code gives you the last digit of the year. Similarly to AE, you then have to use other clues to determine what decade they're from. Other brands might have a date code system, but I've never seen or read anything about it.

I've seen many people talk about dating AE shoes, but very few talk about which years are the most desirable. Is it the older the better or are there exceptional years like wine? I think the guys on Styleforum talk about the 1990s to 2000s as the Golden years. I can’t say exactly when, but I think the years Paul Grangaard was CEO were some of the best.
