18:34 Hi, I love your video; I am just getting started with nepenthes ; and thought I would set up aquarium, since I am limited in space. Unfortunately, the aquarium I bought doesn’t have a top, so I’ll have to figure something out. Thanks for your ideas!
Great video, helped me alot! I discovered this world of carnivorous plants a couple years ago, and this year i bought my first ones and today i am planning my first Nepenethes+Sundews tank and realy exited about it! I do have some Questions I hope you can answer :) 1. I wanted to put Lava rocks for drainage instead of the Perlite, Is there any difference? 2. Do i have to keep them in there pot? - i wanted to repot them directly to a substrate of Perlite & Sphagnum & Peat Moss Thanks alot!
Justin, I need help with my tank. I'm losing humidity, so I bought a heating pad for reptiles. I new to carnivorous plant terrarium. But my sundews haven't produced any dew in some weeks. Can you give me some pointers. I have just white grow lights for it. They are so hard to get it just right for them.
I really appreciate this video! Just did this exact set up (minus the humidifier). I live in a dry climate. Before, I had it on a windowsill with a humidifier spraying directly on it. It brought the humidity around the plant to 70% (overall room humidity was around 50%). However, after setting up the terrarium and spraying it down, I woke up the next morning to find the humidity at 97%! It seems like I probably won’t even need the humidifier pumping in the tank. However, just in case I do, what’s the hose you used to connect the humidifier and how did you feed it into the tank?
Amazing video! Curious how do you control algae growth? I am having some issues with algae growing on sphagnum. Also, how do you only have 154 subscribers? your videos are always so amazing!
Thanks so much 😄 Best thing to do with algae growth is more airflow , if there’s too much stagnant air algae can definitely become a problem definitely try a small fan that should help your algae problem significantly thanks again.
How often do you water the plants in this set up ? Or do you just water the set up when it dries out ? I have a similar set up and my media stays wet for weeks will this cause rot ? I’m really new to nepenthes lol
Hi Antonio I usually water them every other day but not directly with a spray bottle I let my humidifier do all the work, I usually keep the humidifier on for about 30 minutes and that should be enough water to keep the plants moist. Biggest thing I would recommend is a small fan or keeping the tank open for a few hours each day this will release some of the moisture/ humidity out and give the soil time to dry just a bit but never completely dry out. If you notice there’s A lot of water sitting on the bottom of the tank I would definitely remove that water as it can potentially rot your nepenthes . Biggest thing when having a tank set up is having a drainage layer to prevent root rot . Last but not least you want to make sure your soil is always moist like a sponge and never waterlogged 🌱. Hope that helps if you have any other questions I will do my best to answer them thanks so much for watching and have an awesome day. 😄🌱
Hi yea I try to supplement the plants with both sunlight and light fixtures when possible I get some really good results😄 if you have a south facing window I would definitely give it a try 👍
great video! very very helpful! ive been wanting to build something like this for a while now but have a ton of issues with spider mites. how do you deal with pests in your setups? any products or tips to recommend?
27:07 I made a setup with this last year, I tried the water pool idea, it works, keeps the temperatures low, but also cuased condensation on the outsides at the water level and the drop takes some time. Also the water level was a problem for some of my taller plants. I switched to using a computer watercooler heatsink. A pump pushes the water through the chiller, into the heatsink element and into a reservoir (in which I put humidifiers also, just get from Aliexpress or something, cheap but effective) The fans on the heatsink cause continous flow in the tank. The plus of this system is that the drop in temperature goes really fast. Another added benefit of this is you hardly have to refill the water unlike your evaporative cooler setup and you can rig it so it works with temp controllers. Can go for a good week by itself, leaves room for holidays.
WHERE DO YOU BUY YOUR DRIED MOSS?! I heard from other sources that they never been able to grow back the moss like you said you have. I don’t wanna buy dried moss that won’t grow. Please if u see this lmk, thank u sm. I’m starting my terrarium based off ur video today
It's an interesting concept for sure, but why putting your Nepenthes in a terrarium that will be too small in a year? The only way this setup would be useful would be to grow Nepenthes from seeds as the grow very slow. But since a lot of Nepenthes can grow on a windowsill, a simple water tray would do the same without having a lid. ;)
Lol I have done this with all my nepenthes and have had nothing but success with this method . For most nepenthes it takes a lot longer then a year for them to outgrow my tanks setups. To be truthfully honest the tray method is a very simple approach to Growing nepenthes as it can work for more simple species such as ventricosa, alata and crosses that have ventricosa in it but once you start getting into more complicated subspecies of nepenthes it’s just doesn’t work out trust me I have over 600 nepenthes currently and have been growing nepenthes for almost 20 years lol. The biggest problem I had with the tray method is you simply cannot keep humidity at a consistent level and temperature regulation , which won’t be a big issue for most nepenthes but can be for some . I won’t cover all the issues that I’ve had because I’ll probably make a video on it but the tray method does have its perks and work great for beginners but this is a video for people who don’t have a windowsill that provides enough light for there plants or wants to take growing nepenthes to the next level because you can always scale this method up. I appreciate the comment and have an awesome day😄🤙🌿
@@structuralplants5420 Always interesting to share comments :) Yes all Neps won't like the windowsill (especially since a windowsill in Texas won't be the same as one in Florida). But believe me "beginner species" isn't the right word. Yes you have to check your conditions then find the species that will accept them. But 'if your windowsill allow it' cool Neps like hamata, lowii, veitchii can grow well. ;) My channel is about interviewing other windowsill nepenthes growers and some are very successful . Happy growing! ;)
would it be ok if I had the humidifier in tank? I have a 20 gal tank and it would fit but I'm asking to make sure that it wont fail. Also how long should I keep the humidifier on for?
Hi Having a humidifier in the tank will be fine as long as the humidifier itself is somewhat waterproof. - I usually keep my humidifier on half day or on all day on a hot day lol 😁🌿
@@structuralplants5420 I have the tank set up for about a week and I have a reptile heat pad that sticks to the side of the tank but its not getting hot enough. What would you recommend doing?
