In today’s politically correct world, the thoughts of revival sweeping the nations appears as an impossible dream. Maybe you are standing for a loved one or family member and in today’s environment you feel it is hopeless.
Christianity seems no longer relevant and it is easy to believe that true Christianity will fail to exist within a few years. But, as we will see, previous generations faced similar challenges and when all seemed lost and the church was backed against a wall, as His people prayed and cried out to the God Who hears and sees, He responded with revival.
I believe revival is a divine assault on society. In this episode we will see how when the Lord moves, everything changes. Listen to this account of the “Year of Grace,” and how God moved in 1859 in Northern Ireland and changed everything.
Certain neighborhoods were clearly marked as either Nationalist (Roman Catholic) or Unionist (Protestants). The sidewalks in these neighborhoods were painted either green, white and orange or red, white and blue. Murals of heroes for their cause were on the walls, warning strangers and those of the opposite belief to stay out. Hate reigned and the nation was deeply divided. Politicians, despite all of their efforts, could not bring lasting peace.
On a country road as you enter the village of Connor, a sign states, “The Village of Connor: Historic Ecclesiastical Site.” It reminds all entering this small town of the incredible year of 1859. So, what happened? In this town through the power of prayer the Second Great Awakening in Britain was birthed.
The deeper revival we desire, the deeper must be our repentance. Before revival breaks out, we must return to Him and judge ourselves. We must cry out for mercy and allow His love to break us and wreck us. The converts were those who hungered after Him until He answered and changed them forever. As a result, they were compelled to go and tell the world. When the Holy Spirit turns up we can’t do church as usual. It must challenge us and call us to go. But we must be careful that our traditions, our ways of doing things and our thinking does not make the Word of no effect. Christ came to save sinners. He was unmoved by the extent of their sin, but in love sought to deliver them. The Pharisees, or religious leaders of the time, were the ones He rebuked and warned. They were the ones who should have known better. Jesus did not come under their authority, study in their Bible schools or be part of their network. They challenged Jesus asking Him, “Under what authority do you do these things?” Revival is the same. Let us remember that as we have learned, in revivals, He typically uses vessels rejected by men. Vessels we declared unqualified and not ready. May we be found worthy vessels by Him prepared and ready for the Master’s use.
