John Romero said that they actually changed the swatiska because of a WW2 Veteran who has written a letter to ID Software. You can hear it in the "IGN Plays DOOM with John Romero" Special on RU-vid.
MrVercettti89 yeah I mean wouldn't it make sense that they have a reference to their other game wolfenstein? Not to mention that nazis would obviously go to hell for their crimes... or may have had demonic influence to begin with... also a swastika technically isn't even a nazis origin symbol it comes from somewhere else, I think it means some kind of balance like yin & yang does.
thats true. romero said that many other SJW people bithched about that swastika but only reason why he removed it is because the veteran who asked him to do so. he respected that veteran.
Yeah, that must have happened in time for V1.9, or V1.666, can't remember. I know way back when I was playing the V1.2 Shareware, the swastika DID appear here, so I'm sure it must have been changed just before Ultimate DOOM came about.
I love your videos, the narration is brilliant. And not only that but you know and play Doom really well (compared to all this recent let's play Doom fake gimmick nostalgia where they keep playing very slowly and miss obvious stuff) and explain every nuisance and detail of each map. I knew about the possibility to miss the soul sphere and came here to see if you describe it. And I forgot about the raising floor to the blue armor which looks like a lift but you can't go up there later if you miss it. It's fun you explain even some line triggers which sometimes I forget where they happen (I didn't know where the swastika goes down and usually circled around the shape till it falls down) even if I've finished Doom 1/2 with 100% secrets many times. I think I am gonna watch every Doom video of yours and enjoy it, since I am familiar with the setting but it's refreshing to revisit the levels where someone makes good and funny commentary in every detail. That soul where location is the most unfair secret in doom, u have to do the whole map again just to get it, most secrets let u repeat the process to get it, even on later maps, this secret is just unforgiving , miss the lift and your fucked, no soul sphere
It's not like the map is that huge for this to be a problem... the secret is even at very beginning at the map. In case you forgot to quick save it wouldn't take even a minute to start again and get right back at it.
At my high school in Florida which was 7-12 two of my friends whose mother was the librarian and had access to the school’s network put both Doom and Doom II on every PC. So if you were a smart kid and knew the command prompt you could play Doom in class. I spent a lot of time playing Doom at school. Ah the 90’s .
My business/typing class just gave me an A in class even though I never did any class work. She said if I knew how to access the hidden games I knew more than enough.
And most people who never played this game before might not know the floor in the blue room in an earlier version of this game was swastika homage to Id software's earlier game wolfenstein 3d
I have vivid memories of playing this level in 1994, at age 9. The maze past the blue door was amazingly stressful to me at the time, and even now I find it hard to credit the fact that there's essentially just a straight line to the exit.
I can relate, although when you were 9 playing this game, I was just born. XD But I jumped into the doom series with doom64, and I later came back to play this doom, and as a kid, I remember actually getting lost in these maps, esp. This one and stage 2, with their mazes. Now, I look back and wonder how I got lost? I can literally run around these maps and my memory has developed to a point where the whole map can exist at once in my mind, I was able to memorize it. Back then... No chance. Makes me appreciate the series a lot more, seeing the big picture, the game as a whole. C:
Hi man, could you help me? Because at the end of the level this "bridge" doesn't appear for me to go to the last door. Could it be because I have a low difficulty setting activated? (I just started playing Doom so I wanted to play a little on low difficulty to understand the game)
Bro, I'm laughing a lot, I just found out what I had to do. Before entering the final room, you have to press the space bar for the "bridge" to go up, and I hadn't done that. Hahahaha
It's just another way to lower the elevator there. So yeah, it's kind of redundant (at least on single-player; don't know what kind of funny tricks you could do with that in a multiplayer match).
hey BMD, for this level if you open the four doors from the passage to the blue area and the blue door you can come up behind the imps and they won't notice you
Holy smelly crap balls. If you miss the chance of getting that beautiful blue soul sphere, than that's it. You lose 100 health points permanently. I actually pulled such a daring attempt off on the SNES version of this game. Wow! The maze in level 4 of this game is so cool looking.
I spent half an hour trying to complete this mission after having killed all the enemies and not being able to figure out how to reach the exit door. The bridge doesn't extend in my playthrough for some reason thus rendering it unbeatable.
Its weird the minor differences that there are on the PS4 version. Im sad to say im about 25 years late to the original doom. It doesnt announce on screen when you find a secret. The Stimpacks have green +'s instead of red, the lighting is a little diffferent. My first foray into Doom was Doom 64. I have no idea how i even got the game, i dont think i bought it. Then i played Doom 2016 and once again, NO IDEA where the game came from. Now I wanna make my way through all of them before Eternal comes out in March.
Huh never seen a suicidal imp before... Wait I have in Doom 2016 (every single imp in that Doom game) considering they know about the Doomslayer and yet they choose to still fight you instead of running away
Hmm. In my version of DOOM for DOS that I've downloaded from dosgamesarchive it is the fifth level, and not fourth. There is another one level E1M4 in that version. Fortunately I've passed that level (100/100/100) without any help on the first try.
I made it to the lift that goes up by the switch and than pressed the wrong button and jumped off thankfully I was playing on my Ti-nspire CX calculator(through ndless) I've never been so thankful for quickload in my life
PsychoUndSoXD Yes. Kitchen Ace (And Taking Names) is also used in the second half of Super Columbine Massacre RPG. Nice. Also, BMD, your comments on this level made me chuckle, especially when you fire a barrel near the imps with a rocket launcher. :)
Honestly, the maze isn't even that difficult. The only really "hard" part Is establishing a foothold at the start of the maze, as the enemies are very quick, and can overwhelm you easily.
@@nicholasderienzo7364 Yup, if you stand on the closest corner of the elevator to the switch and turn to face the switch, you'll be close enough to activate it. But since you're right on the corner of the elevator, you do have to be careful in how you reposition yourself after it starts moving.
WHAT Ive been using these videos lately for completionist reasons and I saw a comment last video about him disappearing! The comment was 2 yrs old. I was all D: but HE'S BACK? Love the cut&dry narration, it's so succinct and every map detail is revealed, it's literally the perfect walkthrough. Thanks, BigMacDavis!
It was censored in order to prevent Doom from suffering the same fate as Wolf 3-D. It's clear that Germany hates reminders of the horrible time when Jews were spat upon and Hitler seeing anyone different from him (and "his" people) as inferior.
Will you make a walkthrough of E1M4b : Phobos Mission Control, the unofficial replacement level made John Romero himself? It's awesome! doom.fandom.com/wiki/Phobos_Mission_Control
Why is it the 1st time that be never get the SoulSphere in this map and then it's like, are we that much of an amateur here? Seems like it. Hahaha! Overall a good map I say. I have gotten better at this.
