blood thunder is right, even with modern source ports, Doom 1 and 2 can be a little weird to set up correctly. Especially on ports like PrBoom+.

I've always heard "practice runs" when doing a speedrun in public... what's the point of practicing for a game that is mainly based on RNG movement of enemies?

You still want to practise jumps and manoeuvres, and practising for different approaches depending on what the enemies do.

Yeah, games with high RNG are all about minimizing the effects of it, or practicing backup strategies to use in case X or Y happens. It's akin to studying endgames in chess; every individual endgame scenario with different assortments of pieces is rare, but if you practice a wide variety of them you can have a pretty good idea what to do when you end up in one.
