31:36 Act 1 Fatui Reveal - The name "I know the name of the stranger" references Puccini's Turandot. A vengeful princess Turandot, fueled by a hatred for princes derived from her ancestor who was abducted and killed by a prince, decides that no prince shall ever have her. She declares that any suitor must pass three riddles to take her hand. Prince Calaf passes the three riddles to her astonishment but remains cold to him. As a show of Prince Calaf's love, he gives her a riddle of his own: If she can learn his name by morning's light, he will forfeit his life. - My interpretation of this is that Lyney/ttes Fatui association bringing forth public scrutiny/ threat of a death penalty etc. mirrors the fatal verdict that Calaf would have faced if his name was learned. - As an opera guy I just had to give my two cents, hope this helps!!
Pretty sure the reason Tears of Days Past ends abruptly is because it's the unfinished version of Whispers of Domus Aurea, the song Remus couldn't finish when his plans with Scylla fell through. In the cutscene, we complete the requiem!
i never thought i would be reading Shakespeare plays in my free time but this summary was actually pretty interesting www.folger.edu/explore/shakespeares-works/alls-well-that-ends-well/read/ this link has a brief overview for the whole thing, and then summaries for each act and scene. pretty cool stuff!
15:26 "La comédie ni humaine ni divine" actually references two classical works in it's name : - "La Divina Commedia" (The Divine Comedy) by medieval italian author Dante Alighieri, poem about Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. It's a foundational piece for Italy's litterature. - "La Comédie humaine" (The Human Comedy) by 19th century french author Honoré de Balzac, a huge saga (90 works!) presenting a very intricate and realistic view of society (especially it's more mundane and ugly aspects), which was fairly new at its time. (Funnily enough, the title is a nod to the Divine Comedy) Since it plays during the discovery of the "real" Foçalors, it can be interpreted as the duality of Furina (the human) and Foçalors (the divine), making them an entity that isn't really one or the other, "neither human nor divine"...
23:36 omg I somehow missed this Nietzsche reference. I will spare you the full lore morbing but Kaeya and Furina already have some connections via Shakespeare (All the World's a Stage...) ....but Kaeya's hangout also has a huge Nietzche reference. They know what they're doing!!! they can't keep getting away with this!!! Great video!! thank yooooou
@@NLZ3 ahhh ty! I am not a musically inclined person myself so I appreciate when others like yourself can break down basic things for a casual like me haha. looking forward to your next one!!
as an avid enjoyer of fontaine osts i have spent the last year observing the leitmotifs in the tracks and appreciating them,, thank you for bringing them all into a compilation, i know ii'll be coming back to this video quite often
I'M SO OBSESSED OF THIS LEITMOTIF!!! I've loved this tune ever since the Teyvat trailer. it was very similar to the fatui theme, so the composer decided to slightly modify it. I'm soooo thank you for this devilishly gorgeous video
my favourite leitmotif of all the game so far!!! and i don’t think my opinion will ever change. the music and melody literally tells how fontaine is, the music speaks by itself. hoyo-mix never misses anything!!!!
I agree on you on liking Arlecchino's phase 1 OST than phase 2. Both are very excellent but, phase 1 just hits different, the way it settles the mood, like she was testing us, until she slowly reveals her potential as we go to the transition to phase 2. This is just my opinion both OST are good and the video is excellent :D.
OMG I never realized the Narzissenkreuz leitmotif was also in the main Fontaine theme but it makes a lot of sense. It gives off the impression of one of those explanations at the beginning of a play that mentions the characters and the tragedy they fall to. 44:50 Honestly it's Sybilla's leitmotif rather than Scylla's, being the oracle referenced in "The Oracle's Finale" and the entity that the Symphony originates from. 50:41 As for Scylla looking like the Narwhal, basically he lost his original Vishap body and got encased in Ichor when Remuria sunk. Ichor is the substance Remus used to replace the blood inside the people he turned into golems, which is Primordial Seawater that he later modified, and had gotten from Egeria when she was still acting as the "heart" of the Primordial Sea. You'll notice it's everywhere in Remuria, even on chandeliers. So more of less, Scylla's current body is made of a Primordial Seawater-like substance. 1:07:09 This has been bothering me foreverrr, I was waiting to see if the furnishing blueprint for it would expand but unfortunately it didn't lol. At the very least, it's a clockwork meka-type thing therefore it should be powered by pneumousia. Personally it reminds me of the mechanisms at the abandoned laboratory under Mary-Ann Memorial Park, and also something like an armillary sphere. 1:09:49 Two these sharing a leitmotif probably has to do with the scenes they're featured in being related to reveals of the "truth", or focus on history. "Contemporary Testimony" is used in Liliane's confession in Act I, Childe/Whale scene, and Potton's confession in Sigewinne's Quest. Meanwhile, "Les murmures des flots"/The whispers of waves is used when Navia is honest about investigating the ruins as a distraction in Act V, Clorinde's GM intro to the game and later when Furina mentions the knive's history in Clorinde's SQ, and when The Witch talks about the "disease" in Sigewinne's SQ. Most instances are related to usage of Primordial Seawater or an area/time associated with its prevalence. The title of the 2nd track is also probably an allusion to the fact that dissolved people turn back into Oceanids and can in select instances communicate through the water i.e. the literal whispering of the waves. So perhaps the intended theme is "the truth is hiding just beneath the surface"?
NARZISSENKREUZ ORDO MENTIONED!!!! I'm so glad you included the leitmotif in this video, I had to skip straight to it when i saw it! I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention about the leitmotif being present in Fontaine's battle theme so I thought it was just me which was driving me nuts. But I'm so glad to see someone else pointing it out in such a good video like this. Thank you! Personally I like to think that it's included in the battle theme because they are such a core part of Fontaine's worldbuilding, and are heroes in their own way (since the battle theme itself sounds heroic). One of the best world quests ever, I will really miss them.
Thank you so much for this compilation, i have so much to say its so good and professional. I really appreciate the immense effort that was put into this, from footage to research to really enjoyable subtitles that elevate the whole experience even more, making it feel like a guided tour. Genshins soundtrack is absolutely astonishing and its videos like this that manage to capture the emotions it can transmit and put it into a relivable experience. I really wish you the best and your channel more growth and again thank you so much for making this video
43:05 My favourite world quest chain ever, i read all the in-game notes and did a whole investigation to understand the story of those kids, and then watched lore youtubers tell their theories haha
The amount of research and attention to detail for this is really impressive, and not to mention for an hour??? Damn it's really good work. Also about Neuvilettes demo sounding different, ngl It feels like the song was structured like a boss fight as well. 30:17 this caption is so real as well. And these characters wearing the headphones just make me audibly giggle for some reason...
Can't believe I'm watching 1 hour video about a game's music, Fontaine has to be one of my favorites when it comes to music, for a classical music, piano and guitar enthusiast
56:00 Firstly, Magick Without Tears haunts my nightmares. I hate it, viscerally. But it has a right to exist and be enjoyed by others, so I leave it be. XD But, to answer your question regarding the leitmotif connections, all that Rene learned how to do regarding the nature of the soul and will was based upon the information he found when he visited Petrichor and the Remurian ruins. It is quite literally the writings we find (and likely more) in that Fort that Rene's schemes were built upon (that and some Khaenri'an findings).
Thank you for making this! Fontaine's music is genuinely some of my favourite ost from any game, period, and I loved hearing the different leitmotifs come up time and time again in different songs to signify different characters/places/concepts. Fantastic work as always by HOYO-MiX and like you said, it goes to show that HOYO-MiX can 100% stand its own ground and continue to make incredible music, even in the absence of Yu-Peng Chen. I seriously cannot wait to hear more of what HOYO-MiX has in store for Natlan's soundtrack, so far it sounds amazing. Also, your comments throighout the video were very nice and I also thought a lot of the same things you did lol. I look forward to more of these leitmotif videos, you did a really solid job on the editing and analysis!
27:03 no, she did not, or it is atleast never alluded to her doing so. Neuvillette's character story 4 tells us how Neuvillette came to have his seat in the court. He, through unknown means, simply received a letter. The space for writing the recipient had no name. It just said "You." He knew it was a letter from Focalors, and she was inviting him to Fontaine, claiming "I shall leave you a seat with the best view in the greatest theater." So, he just went to Fontaine, and got the seat he promised. After the events of the Archon quest, he realised there were a fixed number of seats, and it wasn't really about a chair. For him to take join the audience, Furina stepped down from hers to become the heroine on the stage. As for the part of there being "something he feels as if he has forgotten", that's not really ever elaborated on. But my best guess is that it's about the memories of his past lives. After he regained his full powers, he gained all of those memories, too. So, before he gained his authority, he felt the absence of the memories he *should* have had.
Just discovered your leitmotif videos and they're so interesting, thank you for taking the time doing these! Really looking for the next ones you'll do :)
wow,its very nicely done and THANK YOU FOR NOT ABRUPTLY ENDING THE MUSIC FOR REMURIA PART.While it might not be the main intention of the video itself,i really really like this because in one way,its kind of a lookback to most of fontaine musical and it already feels somewhat nostalgic already.Once again,Thank youuu ^^
9:18 been that way since the start of the game unfortunately but coping that the traveler would finally have a role in natlan(based off venti CBT voicelines that the traveler will gain the pyro archon's power)
Now it's VERY likely that the Traveler will get the pyro archon's power. 5.0 presentation just confirmed that we won't be able to initially resonate with pyro on natlan's statue of the seven 👀
one of the reasons why I love genshin is because of the music so this video was everything I could ever hope for. thank you for this amazing video it's beautiful !!
I love randomly finding Bangers like this on my recommended page, I love copilations of leitmotifs in video game music, and Genshin sure loves to make use of Leitmotifs in its OST, you can even hear parts of the Mondstat battle theme in one of the lattest Natlan concert video
about the whale, skirk referred the gnosis as raments of the 3rd descender, heavily implying that the power of archons and visions are stemmed from outside teyvat so yeah the outsider whale causing unbalance made childe vision malfunctions. also it seems the whale was increasing in size hence the flood happened lmao
I'm begging you to drop that narzissenkreuz medly as its own separate video :0 !! I love listening to that song and each of it variations and I'd love to listen to them all on one place (and I think you did a lovely job putting them all together ^^)
The first time I heard Poesy of Chrysolite, I thought it was a very charming piece of music. When I heard how it ended, I was stunned. It sounds like a very Ravelian, very impressionistic ending and I love it!
I have been looking forward to this video and i just had the time to watch it fully. As a person who enjoys listening to video games music, i had the eyes (or ears ig) for leitmotifs from theme songs, ost, scenes etc and trying to figure out its significance and relation to the story or character, places etc etc. fontaine suprisingly had very good music and story and having someone to give a quite in-depth explanation and thoughts on the music really makes my day. Its like having someone to talk to about a shared interest and for that i thank you for the content. This is quite an unnecessary long ramble but ill just put this here becos i rlly rlly appreciate this. Keep it up!!
43:11 honestly this is one of my favourite world quest chains in this game, and also one of the most calming music my order was: ann, unfinished comedy, ancient colors
i rlly love videos like these. each one you make is awesome for people like me who enjoy these neat little details, and for you to cover so much is rlly nice
really happy to see another one of these great videos!! genshin’s music is such an important part of the game for me, i really loved fontaine’s ost and it always baffled me to see people saying the quality of the music had gone down since ypc left. of course we miss him but the hoyo-mix team is in excellent and capable hands! love reading your commentary on all the different tracks and motifs :) fontaine was awesome and i’ll definitely miss it, but onwards to natlan! very excited to hear what they have in store for us
at one point in the vid you were wondering how Neuvilette bacame the iudex. If i remember correctly folcalors simply wrote him a message telling him to come, shortly before she finished the oratrice.
The Irony that I initially didn't care much for Fontaine (back in 3.8) and in 4.0 I already considered it my fav nation, and at the same time in 4.0 I didn't like Furina and then 4.2 made her my fav character (story wise). Fontaine's music really knows how to express feelings, from joy and happiness, to melancholy and mystery. Peak fiction We all are waiting for whatever Natlan is cooking. Side note: Bro, the fact that Fontaine was a year ago 💀I didn't felt any of the other nations ended this quick
Such a great video, i just found out you and i really like your works and i also lie to read your comment on every segment on this video and also great detail of every character with headphone in the corner of your video 😂 /Sorry for bad english tho🥲
50:42 Crackpot theory I came up with on the spot: The All-Devouring Narwhal looks like Scylla, not the other way around. The Narwhal has the same colors as the primordial sea and everything associated with it. However, when its shrinked down after being separated from the water from the primordial sea, it turns into a purple and black black hole. All of the materials it drops are entietly purple and black, as well. Maybe absorbing the primordial sea changed the appearance of the whale? As for why Scylla has the colors of the primordial sea: Scylla is a water dragon. Being a water dragon means he is closely related to Neuvillette. Neuvillette is the existance in Teyvat most closely linked with the primordial sea. Maybe his dragon form looks/looked similar to that as well? We've seen dragons tend to take after their sovereign: Geovishaps look pretty similar to Azdaha. It's implied wenuts were once dendro dragons before changing to anemo due to the enviroment, and their shape pretty closely resembles Apep. So, it would be that Scylla looks like Neuvillette, Neuvillette looked like he did because of the primordial sea, Narwhal looks like it does because of the primordial sea as well.
During Sumeru, I got pretty bored of the game (maybe because of the desert who knows but might be just because of the 3 years playing non stop ^^) BUT Fontaine's ost alone reignited something in my passion for genshin and here we are with Natlan ost tomorrow (the first trailers are really really nice hope i'll like what's next to)
THIS IS GODDAMN UNDERRATED WHAT also been working on a "Photon of Fluctuation" letmotif video on my channel, its quite a coincidence to see someone is also making video about Genshin's letmotifs
@@justtpiee i used davinci resolve i started editing the video in late June, i'd say a rough estimate for editing the video is 30+ hours? i'm not a very efficient editor and a decent amount of time was spent collecting broll, doing research for the captions, cutting the songs at appropriate times, matching up cutscene audio to isolated audio if the sfx/voice acting was too loud, etc. biggest time consumer was finding the broll, i think. i could have shaved the time down a lot if i just uploaded the songs with still images and no captions, but i didn't want to do that.
@@justtpiee i only edit when i'm feeling creative or feeling well rested. i was pretty sporadic with the editing for this video and didn't have a schedule, so some days i would edit for 10 hours and then not touch the project for a week. when i was working on the photon leitmotif compilation and the sumeru one last year, i worked on them a bit every day and at least 3- 4 hours on the weekend. people are all different though, so what might work for me to prevent burnout may be what causes burnout for you. make sure to stay healthy and take breaks through your editing sessions :]
LOVE THIS 💙 Damn I can only imagine how much it took to put this together. Kudos + like + sub 👏 P.d: Also I think it is possible to hear the fatui leitmotif in Arlecchino's 2nd phase as well, although most people miss it (in the section after the figer snap, if you are able to distinguish it from all the chaotic dubstep lololol)
@@NLZ3 Okay so the fact that no one else has point it out makes me think that I went crazy and I'm just imagining it 🥹, but in theory if you go to "Absolutio Absoluta Absolutissime" in the Hoyo-Mix yt channel you can hear it at a faster pace than usual in the organ at 1:55, followed by the chanting section in the background at 2:01 (also at a faster pace than when we normally hear it in other OSTs).
18:30 At first, I thought that the water in the fontaine firmanent went up, and the rest of teyvat stayed normal, however when we met lynette she tells us that the water near romaritime harbor also went up, which means it's not only the firmament, which is confusing. I guess there is no reasonable explanation akgdksh, but I dont mind the inconsistency Also, I love the video so much, I always admire how the music team is trying to put different motifes in their tracks and it's so great we can come back to those, listen and also hear your thoughts and alaysis!!!
1:07:02 this "big spinning thing" really was mentioned, Yoimiya said its the clockwork fountain she heard so much about in the 4.3 event! Also AMAZING VIDEO!! You put SO MUCH work behind this!
18:26. if you talk to the npc, galathee, at romaritime habour after the flood, she mentions how she only "heard that the prophecy had occurred at the opera house" and romaritime harbour was too far away. i believe that, lorewise, the fontaine landmass is large enough to have the water levels near the centre rise almost to the height of the opera epiclese but with no visible changes near the edges. although it doesnt make sense as the water would have spread out and caused a larger than usual amount of discharge through the waterfalls at fontaine's borders. maybe the hole below the fortress of meropide sucked all the primordial water back in?😂
it's a plothole and sort of a retcon as well. I don't think they initially planned fontaine to be a floating island like that and I don't think neither of us were. Imo I think originally the region instead of it being elevated it would be more sunk and submerged (if you know what i mean). Which should align well with the dialogues much better. The only stupid explanation to that mess was that the flood is more like the entire water of fontaine going upwards and consuming everything and supposedly if the prophecy came true and did "kill" everyone, the structure and everything would fall down into one big whirlpool. But that's a terrible depiction and only explanation, I;d say they didn't write this well. I think the only other possible explanation why they designed it that way was due to the underwater mechanic/exploration, it's a dumb reason but there's literally nothing else to explain why fontaine looks like that. there's a reason why before we go to fontaine's elevated region, the water below it isn't diveable (afaik).
Another possible reason i can think of why they elevated fontiane instead apart from the underwater gameplay is because of the limited map height. Theoretically, it's possible that most domains are under the map and if they tried to make fontaine not elevated and more submerged and sunk it will probably collide with other domain map and etc. And afaik, if you glitch out of the game, there's a limit to the depth of the endless void you fall in. Probably why they couldn't do it and just decided to elevate fontaine instead. Imo this is a bad excuse for hoyo, since fontaine being elevated and the prophecy being related to flooding doesn't make sense at all. Compared to sumeru, as much as I like the map design of fontaine it is still poorly made. I'd say it's terrible map designer decision to make it elevated.
@@Zliarx never thought of it from a map design perspective, but yea Fontaine's map goes really deep in some areas. the "Nice to Meet You" area in Elynas seems almost as low as Sumeru's underground areas which is pretty crazy given that Fontaine has that extra plateau of vertical space to work with.
Everyone who watches this should turn on the captions, especially if they want context for the next couple statements. I like that there are relatively few tracks in Genshin with lyrics, but I've always preferred that vocal tracks be used sparingly in games and movies. There definitely is a ruined ancient kingdom in Natlan, you can read about it in the artifact descriptions for the burning-based set that drops from the domain in Petrichor. Whether we'll get to explore it remains to be seen, but I'd be a bit surprised if we don't. The swimming controls in Fontaine were one of two video game swim controls that I've ever actively enjoyed. The other one is from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I would be very interested in a more comprehensive breakdown of the Sumeru motifs, as well as videos about the motifs from previous regions.
definitely agree with you for games and movies using lyrical tracks sparingly. fingers crossed that we get to explore Natlan's ancient kingdom, Genshin's abandoned cities paired with the music are some of the best moments i've had playing this game. from what i've seen in majora's mask, the swimming controls look quite nice. i never got around to finishing that game but i switched from the 3ds version to the n64 version after hearing that the game got kinda butchered in the remake. i've done a Sumeru leitmotif video but i wouldn't call it comprehensive. it's definitely missing other leitmotifs like the "Sanctuary of Surasthana" and "Across Dimming Asterisms". i also missed some songs in the leitmotifs that were covered in that video. still, i would recommend you check that one out if you haven't, it's a lot shorter than this one. for the time being i don't see myself doing a compilation for the previous regions, sorry about that. i could see it happening if an eventual expansion for those regions has some callbacks to older themes from that region. if i ever find the time for a Genshin Main Theme compilation, maybe that could be considered as a Mondstadt one?
7:57 nooo don't shut up!! It's amazing how your commentary made me realise just how many references there are to Shakespeare's works in Fontaine/Furina's story :0 I'd love to know if there are deeper parallels between the plays referenced and Fontaine's story... Fun fact, did you know "Shakespeare" (or his fontanian counterpart) canonically exists in game? The description for the Opera Epiclese makes a reference to "an ancient Fontainian playwright [who] once said: 'All the world's a stage, and all of us merely players.'" Food for thought!
Really great video. Love your work so much. I wonder with Natlan, as I don't think we've heard the travail leitmotif in any natlan music yet, if they've repurposed that for a specific character/group? Doesn't sound like it's for Mavuika, so maybe it's for the person she was talking to at the end of the trailer?
thanks, that means a lot :] im really curious when that Travail leitmotif will show up because i feel like it's way too good to leave out. maybe it'll be the theme of "war" so it'll be used in moments relating to competition between the 6 tribes, like the ball game ceremony? i agree that it doesn't feel like it was for Mavuika, so i guess that leaves Capitano and the Primal Fire as other candidates for the theme. hoping that it shows up somewhere in friday's live natlan performance!
I'd argue the "final feast" theme I thing what you labled as the "final feast" theme, aswell as "furinas theme" are both meant to represent her, just different parts of her. They're both played almost exclusively when furina is on screen. Perhaps the final feast theme represents her inner world, how she's trapped playing the same part everyday. while "furinas theme" represents what she seems to the outside world. This could explain why at the start of furinas inner world cutscene, it plays the "final feast" (before she is acting and sick of it) and then transitions to "furinas theme"
