In this comprehensive video, join us as we take a deep dive into upgrading the roof rack system on our Jeep Wrangler JK. We start by reviewing our previous roof rack, the Smittybuilt Basket Style Defender Roof Rack, discussing its pros and cons and showcasing its uninstallation process. But that's just the beginning.
What sets this installation apart is our ingenious DIY electric hard top hoist, meticulously crafted right in our garage. Witness the seamless removal and storage of our hard top, adding both convenience and functionality to our Jeep setup.
Now, onto the main event: installing the Rhino Rack Backbone system. We guide you step by step through the process, from marking the holes using the Rhino Rack pieces as templates to pre-drilling them with precision. Utilizing a 1/8" bit initially, we then escalate to a 1/4" drill bit for the middle and back holes, ensuring a secure fit.
But wait, there's a twist. The front holes demand special attention, requiring a step bit to open them up to the precise measurements of 16mm and 18mm for the bottom and top holes respectively. It's all about those meticulous details to achieve a flawless installation.
And here comes the climax: with the backbone system in place, we seamlessly integrate the platform rack onto it. Using our DIY hardtop hoist once more, we effortlessly lift the rack into the air and mount it onto the backbone system, achieving the ultimate roof rack setup for our Jeep Wrangler JK.
So, if you're ready to elevate your Jeep game to new heights, join us on this journey of innovation and DIY mastery. Don't miss out on transforming your Jeep into the ultimate adventure machine with the Rhino Rack Backbone Platform.

Nicely done.. I would just add two things, face mask when drilling fiberglass and perhaps some silicone sealer to prevent water leakage . Its a great roof rack with a low profile.......

Thank you John. I would totally agree after this installation. In preparation, I watched many other RU-vid videos and read throughly through the Rhino Rack directions and no one ever did those, but after following the instructions, I say face masks, lightweight gloves for sure. Silicone sealer would be an added comfort for sure but I know Rhino Rack includes rubber washers and seals and thus far, I haven’t seen any leaks, but I watch each spot carefully.

Hey Kevin! Great content bro! I love the fact that you keep it real when showing us the install. The Rhino Rack is awesome! Also, we just finished the Big Frog Loop this afternoon. Your video and information was super helpful. Thanks brother and keep up the great work!

Hey David. It was super nice to meet you and Ross. Thank you for supporting the RR channel. 🙏🏼 I’m so glad you guys enjoyed the Big Frog Loop. Ross sent me a pic with the wood strapped on top and it looked like his daughter was grinning ear to ear. I know they enjoyed it. Keep working on the SE Overland channel. I would love to watch your adventures online.

Well, I can honestly say that we’ve done all of the places you spoke of with the exception of the DBBB and hopefully we’ll be able to do it this year, but if I can give some advice on the Cape Lookout drip it would be to do it early spring or late fall because my wife and I done it June of 2023 and man we were miserable because of the heat and the jeep didn’t like it much either. Good luck with all your travels and stay safe.

Thank you for the advice. It is much appreciated. And I’ve heard spring / fall from many people… also because the mosquitoes are pretty bad during the summer. Let me know when you are going to venture up to KY for the DBBB. Maybe we can align our trips.

Hey man im looking into getting something like this and was wandering if you could get me the measurements of the one you have because I am seeing two different sizes. Thanks!

In my opinion, the best rack for the Jeep. it's low profile, holds all the weight needed for a RTT (or heavy load) and does not hinder the ability to take off the Jeep hard top. I know these racks are a bit more pricey but for a "permeant fit", it's the best option. The model I have is the larger one... 72". On a 4 door JKU, it goes from the back of the hard top to the middle of the freedom tops.

Why couldnt you just do that with the top on lol

suppose YOU could do that if you want to, however the top of my Jeep is right at 7.5 foot high.... I am only 5'11". I would be climbing up and down a ladder instead of walking around the top like normal. Also, while the platform is only about 60lbs, it is very awkward to lift and position in the correct spot on the roof while you are also adjusting the feet. My hoist can hold it into position slightly above the feet so it will just hang there. Since I have the hoist already installed in my garage, WHY NOT USE IT to make my life easier? I guess every video has to have 1 unhappy person that has something to say.... TAG, YOUR IT!
