When you walk into the bank, and they recognize you as that coin guy. This is where you want to be with your banks and tellers. I even bring in a big bag of candy for them around xmas every year. Be courteous and polite to all the tellers, and they might even surprise you with a nice find. It's only fair to at least have an account with each bank that you purchase or dump with. Whatever denomination you decide to hunt, learn all you can about varieties and errors in that coinage. I am still watching for one of those 1982 no P dimes or a Henning nickel. Needle in a haystack, but fun to search for.

I started last August with $100.00 with quarters. I've been treated very well with my teller ( it helps that she has known me for 50 plus years. Once I've gone through my rolls and if I'm short, I fill them with the left over quarters from my recent pocket change). I'm still learning. It helps having a magnifying glass, coin roll plastic tubes. So far I've came across about six 1976 qtrs, my oldest so far (I think) is 1961. When my pockets get full of change I'll put them aside untill the container gets full, I'll separate them down and eventually wrap them and turn them in. Glad to meet you Quin.

Another Coinstar tip is that a lot of people forget to check the return slot... Not only does it kick out crusty and stuck together coins, but any denomination that it's not programmed for, domestic or international (dollars, half dollars, Canadian, pesos, yen, rubles, etc.). Occasionally, they will also knock out silver, as the weight is slightly different from common circulated coin. Just a little while back, I found $2-3 in Collectors Edition Silver State Quarters in the return. My first thought was that someone's Grandma is going to be mad. 😂😉

Don't forget about the newer Sacagawea dollar coins! They started minting them in 2009 and are still today. There's a new design each year depicting Native American life. They're fairly common but are still very cool. I believe the mint stopped making them for circulation in 2012, but you can still find them at banks. This also a good coin to fill up your books, if you get the chance to find them.

Great video. Just want to add a few things. After 1964 some proof sets were made with silver quarters. I have found several of these counting down drawers or when I got a change order from the bank. The rim is always the trick. It's either Canadian or a circulated proof. And second. If you go through a ton of coins, personally I like to go to Coinstar to turn them in. If you exchange them for an Amazon, Home Depot, or Lowes gift card it's zero fee. So for anyone who shops there(so pretty much everyone) it's easier than re-rolling.

Still in the intro of your video right now but I’m sure this will be helpful for the 10 lb circulated random coin collection that was my grandfather’s. All I’ve been doing is sorting the types of coin and goin through the dates of them separately. I looked through the whole coin collection which took weeks and none appeared to be worth more than face value.

they apparently are already going for like $5-10 a roll on eBay, it's insane for a year old penny. it's unheard of. I've noticed the bank I go to it'll have either a massive amount of old coinage or 100% new coins. seems like once every 3 months they get all brand new coins.

i started coin roll hunting when i found two silver half dollars at work. Now, I bag up my coins and trade them for new rolls. Get about 2-3 rolls of each pennies to quarters every day i work. I buy the half-dollars, and dollar coins when somebody uses them to buy something. Haven't found any silver quarters, or dimes, but i found plenty of copper, wheats and a few war nickels. I collect -1983, 09 pennies, -1980, 09 for the other denominations.

Regarding quarters, I used to work at a casino that would go through about $20,000 in quarters per week and I would only find 1 silver quarter each week if I was lucky. They're still out there but very rare.

Well done, Ryan. That was a pretty comprehensive run-through with great info. I have a pretty hectic life and started coin roll hunting as a way to relax! I've done tons of pennies. I've also gone through 2 $500 boxes of halves with no silver, however, I pulled out all the uncirculated ones and bicentennials and sell them on Listia for the equivalent of $3-$6 apiece. Your talking about dollar coins reminded me of when I owned a retail store in Phoenix (1999-2009) and a woman came in and paid me in 26 Eisenhower dollars. I kept them in my cash register (in the large bills slot) for about a week. I gave people the option of having part of their change in Ike dollars and no one wanted them. Then, a lady came in, bought something from me and when she heard the loud clanking noise the coins made when the cash register draw opened automatically, she bought them all from me for $30. What a pain they were to have (but they are interesting coins). Thanks again for your videos!

Hey Ryan! How’s it going? I know I’ve said this a lot but I love your channel definitely my favorite. I post crh videos also, I am thinking about doing a customer wrapped vs bank wrapped series

Hey Cointelligence! That sounds like an awesome series idea! I've always said customer wrapped = high risk, high reward and bank wrapped = steady low risk, low reward. It would be interesting to put that to the test!

I started with about $100 mixed of the 4 basic denominations from my own bank. Surprisingly and maybe scarily - most of the rolls were short, except for the quarters. Dimes & nickels both shy a few coins in every roll, pennies I didn't bother weighing or counting bc of all the pre-1982 Copper in there, so I didn't care if they shorted me with those. But this is possibly the largest banking institution in the US I'm talking about, and this just happened as I'm brand new to the hobby, so always weigh & count your rolls & coins. Times are changing & not for the better in this case. Great vid btw thank you for the info

Just went through my coin bank that weighed 12.67 lbs, found 2 silver quarters, 13 wheat pennies, 2 Indian heads (1890,1904), 1 mercury dime, 1944 nickel, 1943 nickel, and a copper nickel; a Susan B. Anthony $1 also a few $1 Sacajawea and presidential $1’s

Oh wow!!! I wish I could have that great of finds in a coin bank! The best ive found was a 1941 wheat penny in super good condition, but unfortunately that has been lost. I also own one bicentennial dollar coin

This was very helpful and I'm starting out. I found a dime that was 1965 and it looked silver but I put it back and 4 quarters that where dated 1965 I put those back too

Yep, 1964 is the last year that those denominations were made of a silver alloy.
