Great video! This approach is very similar to what I've deployed in the past year in an attempt to create a sanctuary bedding area in a ridge bowl feature comprising a few acres. Just deployed a few SD cameras around the fringe, looking forward to seeing results soon. One difference is I've been girdling anything over about 9 inches. Another difference is species composition, which is likely to be unique to each property. Hinging cedars and hickories is a waste of time, however dogwood in particular makes for both great structure and great browse. Red maple is great browse but very little structure. It's an art, and you guys get it. Thanks for the great info!
What is the fire return interval and what time of the year would you burn to maintain structure? Do you see a decline in use while structure is reduced post fire? How close do you normally set up to bedding if you dont have a food plot juxtaposed, say mainly rut hunting or near a pinch point? I like the format of having a video then going in more detail on the podcast after. You all could inform listeners (probably announce on a podcast) of a new video on landbeat. Comments and questions could be made then a future podcast could address them in more detail.
Funny you mention that idea, Land & Legacy is going to start a new podcast going into more detail breaking down our landbeat videos and answering questions that have been posted on them. So comment away!
I basically haven't missed anything you guys have put out over the last 3 years and have completely remodeled our farm with the information. It seems things are going from a double girdle with no herbicide to a single or double with herbicide. I was under the impression that a double girdle would kill a tree completely but it appears that it does not at least on some. We used no herbicide when doing our TSI and double girdled or dropped everything besides the areas I want more open for turkeys which we hack and squirted. The one or two times we tried to use herbicide it was too cold and it froze in the bottle nozzle. I'm using a 3-year or so fire rotation. I will be curious to see if I have to go back in with some herbicide on the weed species trees whose root system survived the double girdle and that the fire won't control.
