Damn, I don't think anyone could have done a better, more informative video on PFD's! I bought an NRS Chinook because it was recommended from a cool dude at FishUSA when I bought my kayak. I honestly didn't think I would wear it since it only needs to be "in the kayak and accessible" if you're an adult in Florida. I actually love it and wear it all the time and having the front pockets is great! Surprisingly, the high back doesn't bother me even though im rockin a peddle drive. I'd say the major advantage of the high back is supporting your head and keeping it above water even if you are knocked unconscious.

The little extra heat my NRS chinook causes is worth being able to have a knife, pliers, nippers, leader spool, and cell phone on my chest. Added plus is certain compact 9mm's fit in the front pockets too.

Excellent video! Safety is SO important! I have an NRS Chinook -- I have 2, actually. I like the high back (I fish from a Hobie PA 12); I bought the second just because I preferred the front pockets. I did have a thin back PFD, and I also liked that, but I think the mesh back on the Chinook is cooler. I HAD an automatic (with the salt) but transferred it to manual. I flipped once but NEVER thought about pulling the inflation cord. I was in shallow water, so it wasn't a huge problem, but I bought my first Chinook once I got home. I also flipped with that in a much more precarious situation (swept by strong current) and that Chinook bobbed me up out of the water very well! So I don't use infatables any more. I've used an NRS Chinook for probably a decade. A friend of mine refers to it as my "kitchen cabinets". Two times I have "tested" it, once at 300 lbs and once 250 lbs and it floated me fine both times. I wear it all the time.

I can attest that my Mustang auto inflate works quite well, thank you. I suspected it would be an issue trying to get back into the kayak with the pfd inflated, and it was. I'll be switching to a foam filled more traditional type. Thanks for the info.

Hey TKF, I batch produce my videos and release them over time. I have the video that I referenced done, scheduled, and mapped to this video.. but in the meantime, it shows a recommended video. I currently have 17 videos in the cue to be released!

I have a Cabelas Anglers PFD that I had for over 10 years. It has buckles, zipper, and big pouches. It's a little bulky and I'm not all about safety but it carries my tools, phone and keys. I wear it all the time. Not uncomfortable at all.

Great info. I'm looking for a new PFD and this gives me a few things to consider. Still keeping my older, more bulky one for cold weather, but one for summer would be the deal for me right now. Off topic, is the walkie talkie a Motorola, Midland or Beofeng?
